Barrackville is a town in Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,211 at the 2020 census.Barrackville was settled beginning in 1767 by William Galloway "Indian Billy" Ice. The town was named in honor of John Barrack, an early settler. It was incorporated January 25, 1968.

The Barrackville Covered Bridge spans 145 feet (44 m) in a single span across Buffalo Creek near Barrackville, West Virginia. Built in 1853 by local bridge builder Lemuel Chenoweth, the structure is a modified arched Burr truss, with siding added twenty years after the bridge's construction.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

Colonial Apartments, also known as the Kennedy Dairy Barn, is a historic building located at Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia. It is a three-story, gambrel roof building in the Colonial Revival style. It was built about 1900 as a barn and modified to its present form about 1942. Those modifications included adding a stone veneer, two hip roof porches, and the addition of a small end gable entrance portico with a partial return and Tuscan order columns. Also on the property is two-story side gable former milk house. It was converted to two apartment units at the same time the barn was converted to an apartment building.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.In 2009, Fairmont State University converted the building from faculty housing into The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center, to support the Folklife-Folklore Studies program at FSU.

The pepperoni roll is a snack popular in West Virginia and some nearby regions of the Appalachian Mountains.Because of the pepperoni's roll's origins in the town, Fairmont has dubbed itself the "pepperoni roll capital of the world". In 2020, in honor of the store and snack's legacy, a marker was put up in Fairmont that states, “West Virginia delicacy created by Italian families in Fairmont to feed local coal miners. Variants now popular statewide.”

Fairmont Normal School Administration Building is a historic school building located on the campus of Fairmont State University at Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia. It was built between 1915 and 1917, and is a large three-story Classical Revival style building sited atop a hill overlooking Locust Avenue. Its light coated brick exterior walls are ornamented with limestone and terra cotta details. Its front features a portico with eight Ionic order columns with shafts made of Indiana Blue Limestone. The original building measured 265 feet by 65 feet; the west wing was added in 1927.The building was renamed Hardway Hall in 1989 for Wendell G. Hardway, a former president of Fairmont State College. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

The Monongah mining disaster of Monongah, West Virginia occurred on December 6, 1907, and has been described as "the worst mining disaster in American history." 362 miners were killed. The explosion occurred in Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines, and was one of the contributing events leading to the creation of the United States Bureau of Mines.

Fairmont Senior High School, is a public high school in Fairmont, West Virginia. The current school building, built in 1928, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Serving grades nine through twelve, it is one of three high schools in Marion County, along with East Fairmont High School and North Marion High School.Fairmont High School (the school's original name) was established at the Second Ward Building in the late 1800s. The school relocated to 5th Street in 1905 and to Loop Park in 1929. The high school was an all-white school until the 1950s. The school offers a number of different extracurricular activities, such as marching band, a choir program, a theatre program, and a wide range of athletic opportunities. Notable alumni include Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton, U.S. Air Force officer Frank Kendall Everest Jr., entrepreneur Jim Delligatti, business executive Heather Bresch, and several others.
