Moormans River

Free Union is a census-designated place (CDP) in Albemarle County, Virginia, United States, ten miles north-northwest of Charlottesville. The population as of the 2020 Census was 187. It is a very small hamlet consisting of a private school (Free Union Country School), a doctor's office, a post office, a homebuilder, and several dozen homes. Otherwise it is entirely rural in character.

St. James Church (also known as Garth Chapel) is a historic church located northwest of Charlottesville near Owensville, Albemarle County, Virginia, United States on VA 614 east of VA 676. The vernacular Gothic Revival chapel was constructed in 1896 with the help of the Garth Family and the sponsorship of Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville. The church served a congregation of between 25–30 people at its construction. Regular worship services were held up until the 1940s, after which only graveside funeral services were held. Beginning in 1974 and continuing to the present day, christenings, weddings, and funerals were held in the church. Although there is no active congregation, St. James Church continues to be a consecrated Episcopal Church.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 14, 2013.

Ballard–Maupin House, also known as Plainview Farm, is a historic home located at Free Union, Albemarle County, Virginia. The original part of the house was built in the 1750-1790 period and is the one-story with attic, three-bay, gable-roofed, frame section on the east. Around 1800–1820, the house was extended on the west by an additional two bays and an attic story was added. It measures approximately 34 feet wide and 30 feet deep. In 1994–1995, the house was restored and a late-19th century addition was removed and replaced with a one-story, shed-roofed, frame addition. Also on the property are a mid-19th century, gable-roofed, frame shed; and frame tractor shed that may date to the mid-1940s.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Midway, also known as Riverdale Farm, is a historic home and farm complex located near Millington, Albemarle County, Virginia. The main dwelling is a two-story, four-bay brick structure with a two-story porch. It was built in three sections, with the east wing built during the 1820s and a second structure to the west about 1815; they were connected in the late 19th century. The east wing features Federal woodwork. A rear (north) kitchen wing was added about 1930. It is connected to the main house by a two-story hyphen. Also on the property are a contributing brick kitchen and wood-frame barn. The grounds of Midway were landscaped in 1936 by noted landscape architect Charles Gillette.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Buck Mountain is a summit in the Free Union area of Albemarle County, Virginia. Its elevation is 1,358 feet and 414 meters. It was named for the abundance of deer in the area. Buck Mountain is bounded by 776, 667 and 601, and 671 roads, as well as Buck Mountain Creek.

Woodlands is a historic home and farm complex located near Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia. The main block was built in 1842–1843, and is a brick I-house with Federal detailing. It was expanded in the 1890s by a two-story frame-and-brick rear "T" with one- and two-story wraparound verandahs. Also on the property is a tall, narrow frame barn, dated to the 1840s, and later farm buildings erected in the 1910s and '20s including a frame dairy barn, a glazed-tile silo, and a stone-and-frame horse barn.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Shack Mountain is a house near Charlottesville, Virginia, that is a tribute to Thomas Jefferson's architectural style. It was designed by and for Fiske Kimball (1881-1955), an architectural historian who was the founder of the University of Virginia School of Architecture, and who is credited with restoring respect for Jefferson's architectural ability. The house derives its name from the Shackelford family, who owned and settled the property in the 18th century.
