Twin Lakes District

Dayton is a former town in Lake County, Colorado, located on the site of what is now Twin Lakes. Like the larger nearby towns of Granite and Oro City, Dayton formed rapidly during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush and failed quickly when the local mining industry collapsed. At its peak from 1866 to 1868, it had hotels, a general store, a courthouse, and a post office and served as the county seat. Dayton's courthouse was taken down and moved to Granite by early 1869. In the decade after Dayton's demise, the area became a vacation destination appreciated for its scenery, hunting, and fishing.Prior to European exploration and colonization, the land was inhabited by the Ute people.

Twin Lakes is a pair of glacier-carved alpine lakes about 15 miles (24 km) south of historic Leadville, Colorado. They are downstream along the Arkansas River, whose headwaters are by Leadville. The lakes, however, are on a tributary, Lake Creek, which joins the Arkansas just below the lakes. After dredging, the lakes now have a surface area of 2,700 acres (11 km2), and they serve as a reservoir to store water for use in the Front Range. Both east and west lakes are recreation areas for boating and fishing.Twin Lakes is also the name of an adjacent census-designated place (CDP) and a post office in and governed by Lake County, Colorado, United States. The Twin Lakes post office has the ZIP Code 81251. At the United States Census 2020, the population of the Twin Lakes CDP was 204.

Interlaken Resort District is located near Twin Lakes, Colorado and was one of the most scenic and most popular resort areas in the mountains of Colorado, in the United States. Located across from the town of Twin Lakes, it began operations in 1879 as a small and unpretentious hotel called the Lakeside Resort on the smaller of the two lakes at the foot of Mt. Elbert. In the 1950s the Twin Lakes were enlarged and Interlaken was cut off from the town and only accessible by boat. The hotel closed shortly after the lake was enlarged. The Interlaken Hotel is a two-story log structure, roughly cruciform in plan, with brick chimneys in the center of its two main wings.

Twin Lakes Dam (National ID # CO02045) is a dam in Lake County, Colorado, about 13 miles south of Leadville. The earthen dam was constructed in 1978 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation with a height of 53 feet and a length at its crest of 3150 feet. The dam is owned and operated by the Bureau as one element of its larger "transbasin" Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, which transfers available water from Colorado's West Slope across the Continental Divide to the more arid, and more populated, East Slope. The reservoir it creates, Twin Lakes, is an enlargement of a natural glacial lake. It has a surface area of 2700 acres and a maximum capacity of 141,000 acre-feet. Recreation includes boating, fishing for trout, and camping at five Forest Service campgrounds in the area (Dexter, Lakeview, Parry Peak, Twin Peaks and White Star).

Derry Mining Site Camp was a mining site camp near Leadville, Colorado that operated during 1916–1923. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The listing included eight contributing buildings and one contributing site.It is located on the old Twin Lakes Toll Road, at an elevation of 9,320 feet (2,840 m). It is close to the Hayden Ranch Headquarters, which is also National Register-listed.

Twin Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in and governed by Adams County, Colorado, United States]. The CDP is a part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of the Twin Lakes CDP was 8,226 at the United States Census 2020. Denver post office 80221 serves the area.

Hayden Ranch Headquarters is located near Leadville, Colorado and is an example of early high country agricultural operations. Colorado Mountain College currently owns the property. A 35 acres (14 ha) portion of the original ranch was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. The listing included 16 contributing buildings and a contributing site. The ranch is at elevation of 9,180 feet (2,800 m). It is located about ten miles south of Leadville and eighteen miles north of Granite, Colorado on U.S. Highway 24, which is also known as the Top of the Rockies State and National Historic and Scenic Byway. It is close to the Derry Mining Site Camp, which is also National Register-listed.

Lake County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,436. The county seat and the only municipality in the county is Leadville. The highest natural point in Colorado and the entire Rocky Mountains is the summit of Mount Elbert in Lake County at 14,440 feet (4,400 meters) elevation.

Lake Fork is a tributary of the Arkansas River in Lake County, Colorado. The river rises in the Holy Cross Wilderness north of Mount Massive in the Northern Sawatch Range of Colorado. It flows through Timberline Lake and then through Turquoise Lake west of Leadville. The river then flows south and joins the Arkansas River southwest of Leadville and west of U.S. Highway 24.

Carbonate County was a county of the state of Colorado that existed for only two days in 1879. Carbonate County was created by renaming Lake County, Colorado.

Granite is an unincorporated community with a U.S. Post Office in Chaffee County, Colorado, United States. The zip code of Granite is 81228. According to the 2010 census, the population is 116.Situated between the Mosquito and the Sawatch mountain ranges, Granite is a high mountain town located on the Arkansas River midway between Leadville to the north, and Buena Vista to the south. It is in close proximity to the second and third highest peaks in the contiguous United States, Mount Elbert and Mount Massive. The town has a rich history from its days during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, when it began as a mining camp, holding the county seat. Early prospectors, such as Horace Tabor, were attracted to the area.
