Pruntytown, West Virginia

Rector College — or Rector College and Girls’ Seminary — was a pioneering Baptist college in Pruntytown, Taylor County, western (now West) Virginia. It was founded in 1839 and discontinued its operations in 1855.

The West Virginia Industrial Home for Boys was — from 1891 to 1983 — the state juvenile detention center for male offenders, located at Pruntytown near Grafton, West Virginia, USA. Young male offenders, aged 12 to 20 years, were sentenced to the facility beginning in 1891. Sentencing was by the juvenile courts, or justices of the peace, for incorrigibility and immorality, and by the criminal courts for felonies. Changes in philosophy regarding youth incarceration, beginning in the 1970s, led to population declines at the Industrial Home, and its sister institution, the West Virginia Industrial Home for Girls, which had opened in 1899 at Salem. In 1983, the Industrial School for Boys closed, the girls’ facility was redesignated as the West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth, and the boys were transferred to it. The Pruntytown Correctional Center (PCC) — a state prison for adult offenders of both genders — opened in 1985 on the old grounds of the former WV Industrial Home for Boys.

West Virginia National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery located Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia. It encompasses 89.7 acres (36.3 ha). Along with Grafton National Cemetery, it is one of the two national cemeteries in the state of West Virginia, both of which are located in Grafton. After it was determined that the 3 acres (1.2 ha) Grafton cemetery had inadequate space for new burials, West Virginia groups began petitioning for a new national cemetery for the state. The federal government appropriated the site of the former West Virginia Industrial Home for Boys for the new cemetery, which was dedicated and opened in 1987.

Pruntytown State Farm Wildlife Management Area, is located near Pruntytown, West Virginia in Taylor County. The WMA is managed as a beef cattle farm by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. Located on 1,764 acres (7.14 km2) gently sloping farmland with hay and pasture fields and woodlots on the steeper slopes. Access to Pruntytown State Farm WMA is from U.S. Route 50 about 1/2 mile west of Pruntytown or from County Route 38 south of Pruntytown.

Taylor County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,705. Its county seat is Grafton. The county was formed in 1844 and named for Senator John Taylor of Caroline. Taylor County is part of the Clarksburg, WV Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Fetterman is an unincorporated community or populated place located in Taylor County, West Virginia, United States. It is coterminous with Ward 1 of the city of Grafton. The elevation of Fetterman is 1,024 feet (312 m) and it appears on the Grafton USGS Map. Taylor County is in the Eastern time zone (UTC-5) and in postal zip code 26354. Fetterman was one of the early settlements in what became Taylor County, Virginia, (later West Virginia). It was originally located at the crossing of the Tygart Valley River by a covered bridge built for the Northwestern Turnpike in the 1830s.

Grafton National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery located in Grafton, West Virginia. It encompasses a total of 3.2 acres (1.3 ha). Along with West Virginia National Cemetery, it is one of two United States Department of Veterans Affairs national cemeteries in West Virginia, both of which are located in Grafton. The first interments took place in 1867 for casualties of the American Civil War in West Virginia. The Grafton cemetery is closed to most new interments due to inadequate space. Interments are made at nearby West Virginia National Cemetery since it was dedicated in 1987.

Wendel is an unincorporated community in Taylor County, West Virginia, United States. Wendel is located on County Route 11, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) northeast of Flemington.

Tygart Dam — also known as Tygart River Dam — is a gravity dam built (1934-38) and operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Taylor County, West Virginia, United States. The dam regulates the waters of the Tygart Valley River. Its storage reservoir is known as Tygart Lake. Most of the lakeshore is occupied by Tygart Lake State Park and Pleasant Creek Wildlife Management Area. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
