Carrickmacross railway station

Carrickmacross (Irish: Carraig Mhachaire Rois, meaning 'rock of the wooded plain') is a town in County Monaghan, Ireland. The town and environs had a population of 5,032 according to the 2016 census, making it the second-largest town in the county. Carrickmacross is a market town which developed around a castle built by the Earl of Essex in 1630. The town is 20 km west of Dundalk and 75 km north-north-west of Dublin city centre and 106 km south west of Belfast. Carrickmacross won the European Entente Florale Silver Medal Award in 1998. The local Gaelic football and hurling club is Carrickmacross Emmets. The local soccer team is Carrick Rovers.

Carrickmacross Emmets is a Gaelic football club from Carrickmacross in County Monaghan in Ireland. The club was founded in 1887. The club participates in Monaghan competitions. The club has won the Monaghan Senior Football Championship eight times and have come runner-up seven times. The Club colours are Green and Yellow. The first club grounds played on were Athletic Grounds, then the Gaelic Grounds. In 1938 the club moved to its present grounds at Emmet Park, which was developed into one of the best venues in the county. It was officially opened in 1953 when Monaghan played Meath. In recent years the club secured property on the Donaghmoyne Road and have developed a full size playing pitch and a training area along with modern changing facilities that can cater for four teams. At present the site is chiefly used for training purposes for adult and juvenile teams as well as ladies and hurling teams but games can be played there when necessary.

Lough na Glack is a lake in County Monaghan, Ireland. It is located 1.75 kilometres (1 mi) southeast of Carrickmacross.

The parish of Killanny (Irish: Cill Éanna) lies in both County Louth and Monaghan and is part of the Diocese of Clogher. It is named after Saint Enda of Aran, known by the diminutive Éanna. The civil parish consists of 31 townlands in County Monaghan and 11 in County Louth. The townland of Killany, which can also be spelled Killanny or Killaney, lies within County Louth, and contains the old St. Ultan's Killanny Parish church and graveyard. The main Dublin-Derry road passes through Killanny. Several small lakes are to be found throughout the parish and the soil quality is superior to that of the north of Carrickmacross, reflecting the underlying limestone rock.

Magheracloone Mitchells is a Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic football club from the parish of Magheracloone in County Monaghan, Ireland. The team participate in the Monaghan Senior Football Championship. The Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club pitch is situated on the main Carrickmacross-Kingscourt Road. On the site there are two pitches (the main pitch and a training pitch), modern changing rooms as well as a community centre and a handball alley.

Killanny Geraldines are a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football team from Killanny parish, County Monaghan, Ireland. The club was founded in 1889. They have never won the Monaghan Senior Football Championship to date but have been runners-up on 3 occasions. Killanny have a senior team and Minor, U-16, U-14, U-13, U-12, U-10 and U-9 teams. These are very promising juvenile teams. The senior squad are currently in the Senior Football League in Monaghan. The minor team have recently reached the club's first Division 1 championship final since 1976 and successfully brought Fergal O'Hanlon to Killanny.

Magheracloone is a parish in south County Monaghan. Its name comes from the Irish Machaire Cluana which means 'plain of meadow'. A generally hilly parish; its name is derived from its most important place in ancient times; a flat area of land in the townland of Camaghy, on which the sports ground and ancient church of St. Molua were located. The parish covers 12,952 statute acres in area, making it the largest parish in South Monaghan. The parish borders three neighbouring counties; Cavan, Louth and Meath. (Magheracloone is the only parish in Monaghan to border Meath). During the 1840s, the population was approximately 9,000; during the 19th Century a the native Irish were starved out and exported to enable British colonization of the American and Australian continents. Today approximately 2,500 people live in Magheracloone. It is approximately 90 km to both Belfast and Dublin. Magheracloone contains the only gypsum mine in Ireland. Extraction from underneath the land has caused sinkholes on occasion, most notably in 1973 and in 2018.

Dún na Rí Forest Park is a forest park is situated on the County Cavan–County Monaghan border, in Ireland. The park itself borders the Shercock and Carrickmacross roads more specifically at Magheracloone and Kingscourt. The park forms a part of the old Cabra Estate.
