The Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Russian: Туркестанская Автономная Советская Социалистическая Республика, romanized: Turkestanskaya Avtonomnaya Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika; 30 April 1918 – 27 October 1924), originally called the Turkestan Socialist Federative Republic, was an autonomous republic of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic located in Soviet Central Asia. Uzbeks were the preeminent nation of the Turkestan ASSR. Tashkent was the capital and largest city in the region. During the Russian Empire, the Turkestan ASSR's territory was governed as Turkestan Krai, the Emirate of Bukhara, and the Khanate of Khiva. From 1905, Pan-Turkist ideologues like Ismail Gasprinski aimed to suppress differences among the peoples who spoke Turkic languages, uniting them into one government.This idea was supported by Vladimir Lenin, and after the Russian Revolution of 1917, the Bolsheviks in Tashkent created the Turkestan ASSR. But in February 1918, the Islamic Council (Uzbek: Shoʻro-i Islomiyya) and the Council of Intelligentsia (Uzb. Shoʻro-i Ulamo) met in Kokand city and declared a rival Turkestan Autonomous Republic, battling Bolshevik forces until the 1920s as part of the conservative Basmachi rebellion.The Turkestan Soviet Federative Republic was officially proclaimed on 30 April 1918.In the late 1917, the TSFR was cut off from the RSFSR by the revolt of the Orenburg Cossacks, but held out, despite being surrounded by hostile states, until the arrival of the Red Army in September 1919 after the Counteroffensive of Eastern Front.Meanwhile, a power struggle among the Communists ensued between those favoring a Pan-Turkist government like Turar Ryskulov and Tursun Khojaev, and those in favor of dividing Soviet Turkestan into smaller ethnic or regional units, such as Fayzulla Xoʻjayev and Akmal Ikramov. The latter group won, as national delimitation in Central Asia began in 1924. Upon dissolution, the Turkestan ASSR was split into Uzbek SSR (now Uzbekistan), Turkmen SSR (now Turkmenistan) with the Tajik ASSR (now Tajikistan), Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast (now Kyrgyzstan), and Karakalpak Autonomous Oblast (now Autonomous Republic of Uzbekistan as Karakalpakstan).

Tashkent (, US also ; Russian: Ташкент, IPA: [tɐʂˈkʲent] ) or Toshkent (; Uzbek: Тошкент / تاشکند, IPA: [tɒʃˈkent]); historically known as Chach, Shash, Binkat) is the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan. It is the most populous city in Central Asia, with a population of 3 million. It is located in northeastern Uzbekistan, near the border with Kazakhstan. Before Islamic influence started in the mid-8th century AD, Tashkent was influenced by the Sogdian and Turkic cultures. After Genghis Khan destroyed it in 1219, it was rebuilt and profited from the Silk Road. From the 18th to the 19th centuries, the city became an independent city-state, before being re-conquered by the Khanate of Kokand. In 1865, Tashkent fell to the Russian Empire; it became the capital of Russian Turkestan. In Soviet times, it witnessed major growth and demographic changes due to forced deportations from throughout the Soviet Union. Much of Tashkent was destroyed in the 1966 Tashkent earthquake, but it was rebuilt as a model Soviet city. It was the fourth-largest city in the Soviet Union at the time, after Moscow, Leningrad and Kyiv.Today, as the capital of an independent Uzbekistan, Tashkent retains a multiethnic population, with ethnic Uzbeks as the majority. In 2009, it celebrated its 2,200 years of written history.

The Tashkent Rebellion (September 1917 – 13 November 1917 [O.S. September 1917 – 31 October 1917]) was a 1917 conflict between revolutionary forces and loyalists of the Russian Provisional Government, which occurred in Tashkent, in what is now Uzbekistan. The events leading to the conflict began on 14 March 1917 [O.S. 1 March 1917], when local leader Aleksey Kuropatkin received word of the February Revolution. Rule shifted to various political parties in the city, and the Tashkent Soviet was created. As time progressed, Imperial officials were replaced, the soviet gained more power, and a regional soviet was created in addition to the existing council. The Russian Provisional Government began attempting to regain control in April, but the soviets tightly restricted its efforts. Many locals rallied in support of soviet power, and in September and October, conflict began between the parties, ending on 10 October [O.S. September 27]. In early November [O.S. late October], the Provisional Government fell, and loyalists attempted to disarm and imprison rebels, with partial success. The loyalists opened artillery fire on 13 November [O.S. 31 October], however a group under a white flag convinced them to cease fighting. Rebels captured the fortress that night, arresting all loyalist leaders and cadets residing there. In the aftermath, the soviet was represented entirely by Bolsheviks, in spite of their limited role in the rebellion itself. Some Muslims and Turkic peoples in the surrounding areas resisted soviet control, but the region would nonetheless become the Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

The Amir Timur Square (Uzbek: Amir Temur xiyoboni, Амир Тимур Хиёбони) is the main town square in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Yunus Rajabiy is a station of the Tashkent Metro on Yunusobod Line. It was opened on 24 October 2001 as part of the inaugural section of the line, between Ming Orik and Habib Abdullayev. It is a transfer station to Amir Temur Xiyoboni, Chilonzor Line.

Amir Temur Xiyoboni (“Amir Timur Avenue”) is a station of the Tashkent Metro on Chilonzor Line. It is a transfer station to Yunus Rajabiy, Yunusobod Line. The station is named for the square of Amir Timur.

The Amir Timur Museum is located in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. It opened in 1996, and is dedicated to the Turco-Mongol warlord Amir Timur (Tamerlane).

Tashkent State University of Law (TSUL) is a public higher educational institution. It is one of the leading Uzbek legal research centers, located in the capital city of Tashkent. The university is one of the leading universities in Uzbekistan, renowned as a national center of legal science and education, its prestige is widespread locally, extends far beyond the borders of the Republic, as well. In 2021, Tashkent State University of Law was ranked as one of the TOP-500 universities in the world by Times Higher Education. The university comprises twelve specialized and three general-studies departments, a center of professional legal training and career development based on international standards, a specialized branch for training and retraining of legal personnel in the sphere of crime prevention, public security and Academic Lyceum. Moreover, the university also provides methodological guidance and coordination of 14 professional law colleges that are part of the system of educational institutions of the Ministry of Justice of The Republic of Uzbekistan. The interim rector of the university is Islombek Rustambekov. TSUL is under the authority of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Therefore, the rector of the university is the Deputy Minister of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The Tashkent Polytechnical Museum is an automotive museum in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The museum provides technical and mechanical information about cars made from 1800 to 1900, focusing on the history of automobile technology and production in Uzbekistan and around the world. It is located in the Mirabad district of Tashkent.

Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) is the first international university in Uzbekistan and first in Central Asia to offer Western education, with United Kingdom (UK) qualifications. WIUT was established in 2002 in partnership with the "UMID" Presidential Foundation, the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan, and the University of Westminster in London (UoW).

The Academic Lyceum of Westminster International University in Tashkent (ALWIUT; Uzbek: Toshkent xalqaro Vestminster universiteti akademik litseyi) is a public academic lyceum affiliated with Westminster International University in Tashkent in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Established in 2008, the lyceum offers a two-year pre-university curriculum focused primarily on advanced mathematics and English. In the 2021 national ranking of academic lyceums published by the State Inspectorate for Supervision of Quality in Education, ALWIUT was ranked second among academic lyceums across Uzbekistan.

The Central Bank of Uzbekistan, officially the Central Bank of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbek: O'zbekiston Respublikasi Markaziy banki / Ўзбекистон Республикаси Марказий Банки), is the country's national bank. The current chairman of the central bank is Mamarizo Nurmuratov.
