Hoërskool Wonderboom

Wonderboom South is a northern residential suburb of Pretoria, South Africa. It lies to the south of the Wonderboom, on the slopes of the Magaliesberg mountains.

Champion Trees in South Africa are individual trees or groves that have been identified as having special significance, and therefore protected under Section 12(1) of the National Forests Act of 1998 by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The Wonderboom (Afrikaans: 'wonder tree') is a dense grove of parent and daughter trees of the species Ficus salicifolia, that descended from a central bole of about a thousand years old. It is situated in the Wonderboom Nature Reserve, Pretoria, and two circular walkways currently protect it from pedestrian traffic around its trunk and roots. As it has grown, its outlying branches have rooted themselves around the parent tree. This has repeated until there are now three layers of daughter trees encircling the mother fig, with 13 distinct trunks, covering an area with a diameter of over 50 metres.

The Wonderboom Nature Reserve (Afrikaans: Wonderboom-natuurreservaat) is a 1 km², 200-hectare reserve that incorporates a section of the Magaliesberg range in the northern portion of the Pretoria metropole, South Africa. Its main attractions are the Wonderboom (Afrikaans for "Marvel tree") near the reserve entrance in Lavender street and the derelict Fort Wonderboompoort on the crest of the Magaliesberg, that was constructed towards the end of the nineteenth century, during the Second Boer War. The latter is reached by following the steep, paved walkway that leads from the picnic area to the summit. The vicinity of the fort ruins also afford sweeping views of the city, whose council declared the area around the Wonderboom and both banks of the Apies River a reserve on 28 December 1949.

The eponymous band Wonderboom is not named after the suburb or the tree but after a town by a similar name in the Free State Province.

Rovos Rail is a private railway company operating out of Capital Park Station in Pretoria, South Africa. Rovos Rail runs its train-hotel to a regular schedule on various routes throughout Southern Africa, from South Africa to Namibia and Tanzania. The trains consist of restored Rhodesia Railways (NRZ) coaches with two lounges, two restaurant cars, and private sleeping compartments, each with private ensuite facilities. The train has three types of accommodation on board, the smallest being a Pullman, at 76 square feet; the largest being the Royal Suite, which is half a train car, and 172 square feet. All types of cabins have ensuite shower, sink, and toilet. The Royal Suite also has a Victorian-style bathtub. The company was started in 1989 by Rohan Vos and is still family owned. Rovos Rail employs a staff of 210, from the on-board staff to those working to restore carriages in the company's Capital Park depot.

Sinoville is a northern suburb of Pretoria, South Africa. It lies to the east of the Wonderboom, on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg mountains.

Capital Park is one of Pretoria's oldest and first suburbs and lies approximately 4 km north of the historic Church Square, behind the Pretoria National Zoo. The neighbourhood is bordered by the Witwatersberge on the south side and the Apies River on the west side. The neighbourhood extends from the Apies River to Johan Heyns Drive (previously Voortrekkers Street). Streets in the neighbourhood are named after early mayors of Pretoria (Venter Street, Malherbe Street, Van Heerden Street, Myburg Street). One of the former mayoral residences is in Capital Park. Capital Park was previously a very popular neighbourhood among Italian as well as Portuguese communities - the Portuguese Church is still in Van Heerden Street (2010). The residential area today is cosmopolitan, with predominantly Afrikaans speaking inhabitants. The CPRTA (Capital Park Residents and Taxpayers Association) functions as residents' association to look after the interests of its residents. Schools in Capital Park include Höerskool Langenhoven, Capital Park Primary School, and Laerskool General Jacques Pienaar. Several Afrikaans and English churches are located in Capital Park. Capital Park is centrally located, with Wonderboom Junction, Jacaranda Center, and the Gezina Galleries only being 10 minutes away. Hospitals in the area include Eugene Marais Life Hospital and the Steve Biko Academic Hospital. The climate is subtropical at the slopes of the Witwatersberg (Malherbe and Venter Street). The location, due to the Pretoria National Zoo, offers plenty of bird life. Trouw Street and Flowers Street run through Capital Park and are important lanes between the northeast and western suburbs of Pretoria. Paul Kruger Street serves as the main route between northern suburbs and the Pretoria Central Business Center. Capital Park is commonly known as a favourite neighbourhood for the capital's artist community. Capital Park is about 2 km from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and a favourite student district. Capital Park is also home to the terminus of the world-renowned Rovos Rail luxury cruise train, which transports passengers in comfort to Cape Town, Dar es Salaam, Durban, or Victoria Falls. In 2002 local artists found a bust of a woman (Beaula), by local artist Johan Blignaut, "illegally" in the Apies River. The erection of the bust has enjoyed wide media coverage. The Tshwane Metro Council has notified local artists in writing to remove the bust within 7 days or to accept liability for costs incurred by the Metro Council to remove the image. Resistance by the local community, as well as wide media coverage, ensured that Beaula could acquire a permanent home in Capital Park. However, Beaula disappeared inexplicably in the following year (2003) after the mighty Apies River was in flood. A copy of the original Beaula image was given a permanent resting place next to the Apies River in 2003. The Metro Council's reaction to the placement of the Beaula statue had a positive impact on Capital Park. At the end of November 2002, the Capital Meander Art Trail was established in Capital Park, aiming to promote local artists' art and to establish Capital Park as the "city of art" of the capital. The art trail consists of a variety of art galleries, coffee houses, the Mimi Coerts Museum of Afrikaans and a wine cellar.

Pretoria North (Afrikaans: Pretoria-Noord) is a suburb of the city of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, with a population of 16,972 people according to the 2011 census.Pretoria North was first settled in 1878 by a pioneer column of Afrikaner farmers who started farming alongside the passing Apies River. The Area became a stopping point for travelers moving through the North of Pretoria to the Northern Transvaal. In 1904 an English medium primary School was established in Pretoria. This school was the antecedent to the current Laerskool Danie Malan on the corners of Rachel De Beer and Jan van Riebeeck streets in Pretoria North. This school has been an anchor of the Pretoria North Community for over 110 years and is rich in history and tradition. Other Schools in the Pretoria North Precinct include, Laerskool Rachel de Beer, Laerskool Voortrekker Eeufees, High Schools Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz and Hoërskool Pretoria-Noord. Judging by the structure of the education system in Pretoria North, it is possible to recognise that Pretoria North is a primarily Afrikaans speaking area. All schools in the area are Afrikaans medium. As the name suggests, it is situated to the north of the city centre. It lies 8 kilometres (5 mi) from Church Square, just north of the Magaliesberg and adjacent to Paul Kruger Street (the M1) and the railway line from Pretoria to Polokwane. The Railway connecting Pretoria with Polokwane was laid down by the Paul Kruger Administration in between 1886 and 1899. The Construction was disrupted by the Anglo Boer War but it was finalized before 1910. The Wonderboom station of the railway line is part of the Pretoria North complex and was a reason why the area developed into a small town of its own, functionally connected to the greater city of Pretoria. With transport being its main industry, Pretoria North has two automobile sales corridors in the form of Rachel De Beer street and Gerrit Maritz streets being home to over 50 car dealerships. Pretoria North has one of the highest concentration of car dealerships in the country. Transport is the core of Pretoria North's industrial activity. The area boasts a light motor industrial corridor couched by east and Gerrit Maritz Streets. Glass makers, panel beaters, parts manufacturers and mechanics work in the chain of warehouses in this eastern corridor. At the heart of the Pretoria North CBD is the North Park shopping mall which is a very small and quiet shopping center not maintained anymore. The main retail activity in Pretoria North takes place in the displaced retail center of Shoprite located on the corner of Ben Viljoen and Gerrit Maritz Streets. Other business centers include Solomons General Dealers on Gerrit Maritz Street and Tele Tech on Ben Viljoen Street. The Pretoria North area is largely residential with the Rachel De Beer and Gerrit Maritz corridors straddled by Ben Viljoen Street being the central business district. The Town Planning that went into designing Pretoria North was very poor as the area did not leave space for cultural landmarks and heritage sites.Pretoria North sometimes refers to the general area to the North of the City of Pretoria. This general definition is broad and encompasses the Wonderboom area to the east of Lavender Road and Akasia to the west of Daan De Wet Nel Drive. This broad definition of Pretoria North is a colloquial concept and is not to be confused with the concept in this article. The Onderstepoort campus of the University of Pretoria Faculty of Veterinary Science, and the Wonderboom Airport are nearby.
