It was incorporated as a borough on January 5, 1857, and as a city on December 4, 1891. Hazleton is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania, 97.0 miles (156.1 km) north of Philadelphia and 126.7 miles (203.9 km) west of New York City.

It only has an intermittent flow and some of its waters drain into the Jeddo Tunnel instead of Black Creek. The creek is in the Eastern Middle Anthracite Field. There is at least one bridge crossing the creek.
