Portoria (Portöia /puɾˈtɔːja/ in Ligurian) is a central district of Genoa, administratively included in Municipio I Centro Est. It was one of the sestieri into which the city of Genoa was anciently divided. Its name is linked to the revolt against the Austrians on December 5, 1746, which began with the famous Balilla episode. For centuries a working-class and suburban neighborhood, although included within the city walls, with the urban expansion of the late 19th century it became the center of the modern city. Included in the Portoria area are some of the main streets and squares of downtown Genoa: Piazza De Ferrari, Piazza Dante, Piazza Corvetto, part of the very central Via XX Settembre, the main artery of Genoa's commercial area, and Via Roma.

The Palazzo della Nuova Borsa Valori is a historical building in Genoa, located in Piazza De Ferrari, also known as the Palazzo della Borsa. Built by engineers Dario Carbone and Amedeo Pieragostini, its architecture recalls the Neo-16th century style, while the interiors, by Adolfo Coppedè, are inspired by the Liberty style. The architecture and decorations were intended to highlight the financial power that the Genoese market, due to its high volume of business, expressed at the beginning of the 20th century, when it was the first Italian stock exchange.

Piazza De Ferrari is the main square of Genoa. Situated in the heart of the city between the historical and the modern center, Piazza De Ferrari is renowned for its fountain, which was restored in recent years along with a major restyling of the square. Today next to Piazza De Ferrari are numerous office buildings, headquarters of banks, insurances and other private companies, making of this district the financial and business centre of Genoa, so that the Genoese popularly refer to it as the "City" of Genoa. At the end of the 19th century Genoa was the main financial centre of Italy along with Milan, and Piazza De Ferrari was the place where many institutions were established, like the stock exchange, the Credito Italiano, the branch offices of the Bank of Italy, founded in 1893.

The siege of Genoa took place in 1746 during the War of the Austrian Succession when an Allied force of Austrians, Sardinian soldiers, and British sailors besieged the capital of the Republic of Genoa. The city ultimately surrendered to commander Antoniotto Botta Adorno, after being abandoned by its principal allies France and Spain. The manner in which Austria had negotiated a separate surrender that didn't include Britain or Sardinia angered their allies, and for a while the British fleet under George Townshend were instructed by Arthur Villettes to continue their blockade of the city in protest until ordered to cease it by the Duke of Newcastle in London.

The siege of Genoa took place in 1747 when an Austrian army under the command of Count Schulenburg launched a failed attempt to capture the capital of the Republic of Genoa. The Austrians had captured and then lost Genoa the previous year and made it the central objective of their strategy for 1747 before they would consider further operations against Naples or an invasion of France. Schulenburg's force reached the outskirts of the city in April, but realising they needed more troops they waited until twelve battalions of infantry from their Sardinian allies arrived in June. The delay allowed the French and Spanish to send reinforcements to the city under Joseph Marie, Duke of Boufflers to bolster the garrison. The approach of a Franco-Spanish force under Marshal Belle-Isle and General Las Minas pressured the Sardinians to withdraw to try to defend a possible threat to Milan, and Schulenberg then abandoned the siege blaming the Sardinians. The failed siege led to recriminations between Vienna and Turin with both complaining to their British allies in London about the alleged betrayal of the other.

The State Archives of Genoa (Italian: Archivio di Stato di Genova) is a public archival institution located in Genoa, Italy. It preserves historical records produced by governmental and administrative institutions that operated in the city and surrounding territory and forms part of the national archival network administered by the Italian Ministry of Culture. The archive preserves documentation relating to the institutions of the former Republic of Genoa, including records produced by the political, administrative, and judicial bodies of the republic. It also holds records from the subsequent administrations of the Ligurian Republic, the Kingdom of Sardinia, the Kingdom of Italy, and the Italian Republic.

De Ferrari is a Genoa Metro station, located in Piazza De Ferrari in the centre of Genoa, Italy. The station is close to Teatro Carlo Felice, Galleria Mazzini, the Doge's Palace, and Via XX Settembre. The station opened on 4 February 2005. It was originally designed, like others, by Renzo Piano with finishing touches by Renzo Truffelli. This used to be the last station on the line until the easterly extension towards Genova Brignole railway station opened in 2012.

It also houses a museum (Museo dell'Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti), which includes works of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Giuseppe Abbati, Anton Raphael Mengs, Perin del Vaga, Luca Cambiaso, Bernardo Strozzi, Giovanni Battista Paggi, Sinibaldo Scorza, Domenico Fiasella, Luciano Borzone, Serafino De Tivoli, Plinio Nomellini. The academy was founded in 1751.
