Askeaton GAA

Askeaton Abbey or Askeaton Friary is a ruined medieval Franciscan friary located north of Askeaton, County Limerick, Ireland, on the east bank of the River Deel.

Askeaton (Irish: Eas Géitine, Waterfall of Géitine, also historically spelt Askettin) is a town in County Limerick, Ireland. The town is built on the banks of the River Deel which flows into the Shannon Estuary 3 km to the north. Askeaton is on the N69 road between Limerick and Tralee; it is 25 km west of Limerick and 8 km north of Rathkeale. The town is in a townland and civil parish of the same name.Among the historic structures in the town are a castle dating from 1199 and a Franciscan friary dating from 1389. The castle was abandoned to the English in 1580 – its walls blown up by the fleeing defenders – after the fall of Carrigafoyle Castle during the Desmond Rebellions. Askeaton was a constituency in the Irish House of Commons represented by two members until the dissolution of the parliament in 1801.

Do not confuse this river with River Deal, a tributary of River Boyne. The River Deel (Irish: An Daoil) in Ireland is a tributary of the Shanon estuary. It flows in County Cork and County Limerick. It rises near Dromina in north County Cork and flows north into County Limerick for over 60 km to enter the Shannon Estuary. After its source, it passes the following areas, first Milford and down towards Belville bridge, then on to Castlemahon (Mahoonagh) and nearby Newcastle West, running parallel to the main Limerick-Killarney N21 road, to reach Rathkeale. After leaving Rathkeale, the river crosses the N21 and flows north to Askeaton. It then crosses the N69 before entering the Shannon Estuary a further 4 km north.

Ballysteen (Irish: Baile Stiabhna) is a small village and townland in County Limerick, Ireland. It is located in the civil parish of Iveruss and the historical barony of Kenry. Evidence of ancient settlement in the area includes a number of ringfort, enclosure and tower house sites in the townlands of Ballysteen, Beagh, Ballinvoher and Issane. Beagh Castle, an outpost fortification built in the 13th century by the FitzGerald family, is located close to Ballysteen village. Ballysteen House, an 18th-century country house, is reputedly built on the site of the former Ballysteen Castle. The Catholic church in Ballysteen, which dates to 1861, is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Limerick. The ruins of a 15th or 16th-century chapel and churchyard are nearby in Beagh townland. Ballysteen's Carnegie library (constructed c. 1905) was restored in the early 21st century and is now a community and heritage centre. Local sports clubs include Ballysteen GAA (a Gaelic Athletic Association club which fields teams in competitions organised by Limerick GAA), and Ballysteen AFC (an association football (soccer) club which participates in the Limerick Desmond League). The local primary school, Ballysteen National School, had an enrollment of 26 pupils as of 2024.

Cappagh (Irish: Ceapach) is a parish in west County Limerick, Ireland. The parish was previously known as Connello Lower and Nantenan, with the latter now a townland in the parish. It is surrounded by the parishes of Askeaton and Kilcornan (to the north), Rathkeale (to the south), Croagh (to the east), and Coolcappa (to the west). The patron saint of the parish is St. James. The parish has no public house, post office, or shop, one of the few parishes in Limerick to be without any of these amenities.

The 1961 President Airlines Douglas DC-6 crash occurred on the night of September 10, 1961, when a President Airlines Douglas DC-6B named Theodore Roosevelt outbound from Shannon, Ireland crashed into the nearby River Shannon shortly after takeoff, killing all 83 people on board. To date, the crash remains the deadliest one in Irish territory.

Kilcornan (Irish: Cill Churnáin) is a civil parish in County Limerick. It is about seventeen kilometres west of Limerick city on the N69 road. According to the 2011 census of Ireland the population of the Kilcornan Electoral Division was 749, an increase of 11.6% since 2006. There is a Catholic church and a National School on the main road as well as a public house. Apart from Curraghchase, the ancestral home of the Victorian Poet Aubrey de Vere, the next most visited tourism site in Kilcornan is the Stonehall Visitor Park. There is also a go kart track. It is located across the River Shannon from Shannon Airport, County Clare.

Rathkeale (Irish: Ráth Caola, meaning 'Caola's ringfort') is a town in west County Limerick, in Ireland. It is 30 km (18 mi) southwest of Limerick city on the N21 road to Tralee, County Kerry, and lies on the River Deel. The town is in a townland and civil parish of the same name.It has a significant Irish Traveller population, and since 1995, almost half the town residents were members of the travelling community. Rathkeale also has the largest concentration of descendants of the German Palatines who immigrated to Ireland in the early 18th century. Rathkeale has shopping facilities, a museum, two primary schools, and a community college (Coláiste na Trócaire, founded in 1995). The town has a large Roman Catholic parish church, St. Mary's, Augustinian Abbey ruins, and the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland church.

Curraghchase is a 774-acre (3 km2) forest park located in County Limerick. It is 20 km from the city of Limerick, between the towns of Adare and Askeaton. The land was the Hunt/de Vere family estate for 300 years (1657–1957), including the period of the de Vere baronets, also serving as the home of renowned poet and critic Aubrey Thomas De Vere.
