Maitland is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. Maitland is situated along a number of important transport networks connecting the Cape Town city bowl to the rest of the city. The most important being the railway line that runs through the middle of the suburb and the N1 that is situated on its northern boundary. The area has always been an important transport hub for the city. In 1845 one of the first roads from Stellenbosch through the Maitland area was completed. This effectively connected Cape Town to the rest of Africa as at the time the dunes of the Cape Flats prevented much traffic between the two locations. The suburb is named after Sir Peregrine Maitland who was governor of the Cape in the mid 1840s.

The Alexandra Hospital is a specialist mental health care hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. It provides care for complex mental health issues and intellectual disability.The grounds of the hospital also include the historic windmill, De Nieuwe Molen.

Pinelands railway station is a Metrorail station situated on the western edge of Pinelands, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. It is served by trains on the Cape Flats Line and the Central Line. Cape Flats Line trains travel from Cape Town through Pinelands and Athlone to Retreat. Central Line trains travel from Cape Town through Pinelands and Langa to Mitchell's Plain, Khayelitsha and Bellville. The station has four tracks accessible through two island platforms. The station building is elevated above the tracks and platforms. A parking lot is situated on the eastern side of the tracks.

De Nieuwe Molen is the oldest and the largest extant mill in South Africa and was built in 1782 near the Black River. The mill is situated in the Alexandra Hospital in Maitland, Cape Town and was declared a National Monument in 1978.In 1780, master mason Johan Gottfried Mocke was employed to build the new mill. It was built of imported Dutch baked bricks that were used by sailing ships as ballast material. The mill stood 42m high (including sails) with a diameter of about 10m at the base, and the blades had a flight of 23m. Around 1870, the sails of the windmill were torn off by a storm. The damage was not repaired and the mill became obsolete. The machinery and other woodwork were removed around the year 1920. In 1906, the Alexandra Institute for the disabled was opened near the mill and after 1928, the mill was included in the premises of this institution. The mill was renovated and used as a chapel. The most recent renovation of the mill was in 1996.

Onze Molen is a mill in Durbanville near Cape Town in South Africa. The mill was built between 1837 and 1842 at the Johannesfontein farm. In 1984 the mill was restored by the Natal Bouvereniging. A year earlier, the mill was added to the monument list. An article in the newspaper Die Burger of 4 May 1996 criticized the restoration as historically incorrect. A certain James Walton states that the restorers were after a copy of Mostert's mill than on a restoration of the original. In 1999, a plan to get the mill working again was rejected. Locally, the mill is also known as Die Ou Meul. The Afrikaans word for mill is meul. Nevertheless, the building is called Onze Molen in official documents, after the original Dutch spelling.

Maitland Secondary School, formerly known as Maitland Boys' High School,is a school in the Western Cape. It has been a state high school since 1884, and can trace its history as a private school decades further back into the nineteenth century. The school moved to its current site in 1891 with a single storey classroom block and the two-storey Principal's residence and hostel for boarders, known as “Hinder House”. The school was co Ed. Girls on one side of the school and boys on the other side during the breaks. It was only when you were in standard nine and ten were the girls and boys were allowed to mix In the fifties and sixties the school participated in Cadets.Every Friday after school they would practice band and the cadets would march down the street in full Military garb until one day they were inspected by the commander from the CapeTown castle and were told that they were a sorry lot who could not march like soldiers. That was the last year they had cadets

Oude Molen Technical High School (Afrikaans: Hoër Tegniese Oude Molen) is a semi-private dual-medium co-educational Technical school situated in Pinelands in the city of Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, it is one of the top and most academic technical schools in Western Cape.

Raapenberg Bird Sanctuary is a 10-hectare (25-acre) protected area in Cape Town, located on the Liesbeek river near the suburb of Observatory. The sanctuary consists of a section of the Liesbeek River, with parkland, trees, lawn and picnic sites. It is an important breeding site for a variety of water bird species, such as Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus), Egyptian Geese (Alopochen aegyptiacus) and many duck species. However, the sanctuary is badly overgrown with alien invasive plants which damage the river system and its biodiversity. The river itself is polluted, but is being rehabilitated for recreational activities.The area is intended to form part of the Two Rivers Urban Park (TRUP), which will include many surrounding areas to form a large, integrated natural area in Cape Town. The Valkenberg Hospital is a large, government-funded, tertiary psychiatric hospital in the city of Cape Town, South Africa. It is situated in the suburb of Observatory between the banks of the Liesbeek and Black Rivers, overlooking Devil's Peak in the distance. Together with its associated psychiatric hospitals (Lentegeur, Stikland and Alexandra Hospitals) it is the chief provider of specialist psychiatric services to the Cape Peninsula as well as being a major specialist referral centre of the Western Cape province. It is the main teaching hospital for the University of Cape Town's Department of Psychiatry and is also a specialised training centre for psychiatric nursing (Stellenbosch and Western Cape Nursing Colleges).

The SAAO Library is the national library of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) for astronomy and space science located in Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa. Its primary function is to conduct fundamental research in astronomy and astrophysics. The SAAO library can be seen as the integral part of the facility as it provides the research staff with access to essential information and tools that allow them to function as informed professionals within their community.The SAAO library is part of the larger National Research Foundation (NRF) therefore the library has to align its strategic actions with those of the NRF. Any strategic actions adopted by the library have to contribute also the NRF's strategic directions and should assist in achieving the NRF's corporate goals.

The Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, is the oldest continuously existing scientific institution in South Africa. Founded by the British Board of Longitude in 1820, it now forms the headquarters building of the South African Astronomical Observatory. The institution was located on a small hill 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south-east from the centre of Cape Town. Over the following century a suburb of the city grew up in the area; the suburb was named Observatory after the pre-existing Royal Observatory. It was declared a National Heritage Site in December 2018 and has also been the subject of an ICOMOS/IAU Case Study as a World Heritage Site.
