Sumerduck () is a small unincorporated village located equidistant between Fredericksburg, Culpeper, and Warrenton, as it is in Fauquier County in the U.S. state of Virginia. The name was derived from the fact that ducks flocked here in the summer. Sumerduck is home to the major portion of the C.F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area, with several entrances to the reserve off of the major thoroughfare, VA Route 651. The community is also home to Cider Lab (a small batch, craft cidery), Rogers Ford Farm Winery and Smith's Antiques.The Sumerduck Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Chester F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area (also known as the C.F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area) is a 4,539-acre (18.37 km2) Wildlife Management Area located in Fauquier and Culpeper counties, Virginia. It contains over 1,000 acres (4 km2) of open land previously used for agriculture; additional open areas may be found within the forests on the property. Most of the terrain is rolling, low, and shallow; the steepest land can be seen near the Rappahannock River, which forms a large part of the property's western border. A number of small streams cross the land, and a three-acre (12,000 m2) pond is located near its center. The forests on the property contain both pine and hardwood.The area allows seasonal hunting for deer, turkey, small game, and waterfowl. A shooting range for sighting-in rifles is available. Fishing includes opportunities for bluegill, sunfish, carp, bass, and channel catfish in Phelps Pond; the Rappahannock River at Kelly's Ford contains smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rock bass, sunfish, carp, channel catfish, and suckers. A canoe/kayak boat ramp is available at Kelly's Ford. Other permissible activities include fishing, hiking, horseback riding, boating, and primitive camping.Chester F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Access for persons 17 years of age or older requires a valid hunting or fishing permit, or a WMA access permit.

The Veterans Memorial Dam (National ID # VA137001), also known as the Lake of the Woods Main Dam, is an earth-fill embankment dam on the Flat Run located 15.3 mi (25 km) west of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The dam was constructed in 1968 with the primary purpose of recreation. Surrounding its reservoir is the resort community of Lake of the Woods. The Lake of the Woods Association owns the dam.

Dunavant is an unincorporated community in Spotsylvania County north of Chancellorsville, running along the Rapidan River and bordering Culpeper County in the state of Virginia, United States. The Dunavant area comprises the extreme northern tip of Spotsylvania County. There are roughly 1,000 people in this community as of 2010.

Germanna was a German settlement in the Colony of Virginia, settled in two waves, first in 1714 and then in 1717. Virginia Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood encouraged the immigration by advertising in Germany for miners to move to Virginia and establish a mining industry in the colony.

Goldvein is an unincorporated hamlet in Fauquier County, Virginia, running along US Route 17, and approximately 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Fredericksburg, Virginia and 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Warrenton, Virginia. It has a population of approximately 200. It is home to the Gold Mining Camp Museum at Monroe Park. At one time, there were up to 18 active gold mines in the Goldvein area, although none of them are still active commercially.

Lake of the Woods is a census-designated place in Locust Grove, Orange County, Virginia, United States. It is a gated subdivision covering approximately 2,600 acres with 4,260 lots (850 with lake frontage) distributed among 16 sections (many named after well-known southern names and landmarks). It includes more than 41 miles of paved private roads, and since 2020 has been listed in the Washington–Baltimore combined statistical area. Lake of the Woods has grown into a bedroom community for Fredericksburg, within the trade area of Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The population as of the 2010 Census was 7,177. Founded as a resort community built around a man-made lake, it now includes two lakes: the Main Lake and Keaton's Lake. The Main Lake covers 500 acres and is fed by Flat Run and numerous springs. Veterans Memorial Dam, spanning 1,450 feet along the northwest edge of the Main Lake, was built in 1968. The Main Lake ranges in depth from two feet at the upper southwest end, where Flat Run feeds the lake, to 45 feet at the upper end near the dam. It has two marinas, seven lake access areas, and eight sand beaches. Keaton's Lake is a 35-acre impoundment about 7 feet deep, at the northeast corner of the community close to Route 3; its dam spans 450 feet. Lake of the Woods has its own Volunteer Fire and Rescue company. Lake of the Woods was created in 1967 by Virginia Wildlife Clubs, a subsidiary of U.S. Land, Inc., and subsequently bought and developed into single family owner occupied housing by Boise Cascade Corporation. The Lake of the Woods Association, Inc. assumed ownership of the common areas and control in 1972. Lake of the Woods, just outside of Spotsylvania County/Fredericksburg is in the northern neck of Orange County where the cross-commuting interchange with the Washington Metropolitan Area is high enough to merit inclusion in the Metropolitan Area, although more farther south parts of Orange County are more rural and still cause the overall county-wide commuter interchange to fall below the threshold for inclusion in the Washington Metropolitan Area which is calculated by the county level. In 2020, Lake of the Woods began being listed on US Census data as part of Combined Statistical Area within Washington,DC-Baltimore,MD-Arlington,VA.

Wilderness is an unincorporated community on the border of Orange and Spotsylvania counties in Virginia, United States. The community is centered at the intersection of Virginia primary 20 and Virginia primary 3.The name likely comes from the nearby thick forest known as The Wilderness Forest, where a Civil War battle nearby known as the Battle of the Wilderness occurred. Locust Grove is the official mailing address for Wilderness. Pilgrim Baptist Church is a historically Black church in Wilderness, in 1974 Rev. Earl Bledsoe was pastor.

Casanova Historic District is a national historic district located at Casanova, Fauquier County, Virginia. It encompasses 32 contributing buildings in the rural crossroads of Casanova. They include a variety of late-19th and early-20th century dwellings, the former Casanova Store, a two-story stone mill converted to a dwelling, the Gothic Revival style Grace Church Parish Hall, a former school, and a former garage converted to a post office in the 1950s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Catlett Historic District is a national historic district located at Catlett, Fauquier County, Virginia. It encompasses 119 contributing buildings, 2 contributing sites, and 11 contributing structures in the rural village of Catlett. It contains a collection of buildings that represent the town during the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries. Notable buildings include Prospect Acres (c. 1855), Edmonds Place (c. 1870), Trenis House, the Gothic Revival style Trinity Church (1872), the former Ensor's Store, Leidy Wilson's Store, and the Wilson Farms Meat Company.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The Wilderness is a densely forested region of Virginia that covers some of Orange County and Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Chancellorsville, Virginia is located here.

The Battle of Kelly's Ford, also known as the Battle of Kellysville or Kelleysville, took place on March 17, 1863, in Culpeper County, Virginia, as part of the cavalry operations along the Rappahannock River during the American Civil War. It set the stage for Brandy Station and other cavalry actions of the Gettysburg Campaign that summer. Twenty-one hundred troopers of Brig. Gen. William W. Averell's Union cavalry division crossed the Rappahannock to attack the Confederate cavalry that had been harassing them that winter. Brig. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee counterattacked with a brigade of about 800 men. After achieving a localized success, Union forces withdrew under pressure in late afternoon, without destroying Lee's cavalry.
