Perth Amboy is a city in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Perth Amboy is part of the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 55,436, an increase of 4,622 (+9.1%) from the 2010 census count of 50,814, which in turn reflected an increase of 3,511 (+7.4%) from the 47,303 counted in the 2000 census. Perth Amboy has a Hispanic majority population. In the 2010 census, the Hispanic population made up 78.1% of the population, the second-highest in the state, behind Union City at 84.7%. Perth Amboy is known as the "City by the Bay", referring to its location adjoining Raritan Bay. The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program calculated that the city's population was 55,357 in 2021, ranking the city as the 725th-most-populous in the country.The earliest residents of the area were the Lenape Native Americans, who called the point on which the city lies "Ompoge". Perth Amboy was settled in 1683 by Scottish colonists and was called "New Perth" after James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth; the native name was eventually corrupted and the two names were merged. Perth Amboy was formed by Royal charter in 1718, and the New Jersey Legislature reaffirmed its status in 1784, after independence. The city was a capital of the Province of New Jersey from 1686 to 1776. During the mid-1800s, the Industrial Revolution and immigration grew the city, developing a variety of neighborhoods which residents from a diverse range of ethnicities lived in. The city developed into a resort town for the Raritan Bayshore near it, but the city has grown in other industries since its redevelopment starting in the 1990s. Perth Amboy borders the Arthur Kill and features a historic waterfront. The Perth Amboy Ferry Slip was once an important ferry slip on the route south from New York City; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Raritan Yacht Club, one of the oldest yacht clubs in the United States, is located in the city. Perth Amboy is connected to the Staten Island borough of New York City via the Outerbridge Crossing.

Academy for Urban Leadership Charter School is a five-year comprehensive public charter school that serves students in seventh through twelfth grades from Perth Amboy, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The school operates under the terms of a charter granted by the New Jersey Department of Education. After opening with 100 students in ninth grade in the 2010–11 school year, the school's plans were to add 100 students each year in ninth grade. As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 414 students and 39.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.6:1. There were 297 students (71.7% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 39 (9.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.AUL's first graduating class of 2014 had a graduating percentage of 95% and the second graduating class had a 100% graduation rate. The school started a sports program, with wrestling the only sport that had a varsity and a junior varsity team. The school also offers softball, baseball and basketball. For other sports that were not offered at the school, students could go participate and play for Perth Amboy High School's team. The school started offering the SAT in its location. It is a college prep school that helps more students graduate and move on to college.

Harbortown is a planned community neighborhood in Perth Amboy in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It is situated south of the Outerbridge Crossing along the Arthur Kill, between the city's traditional waterfront and the Kinder Morgan terminal The 135-acre area was the Lehigh Valley Railroad's (LVRR) Easton and Amboy Railroad's marshaling yards where coal was loaded onto barges until the LVRR's bankruptcy in 1976.

The district is one of 31 former Abbott districts statewide that were established pursuant to the decision by the New Jersey Supreme Court in Abbott v. Burke which are now referred to as "SDA Districts" based on the requirement for the state to cover all costs for school building and renovation projects in these districts under the supervision of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority.As of the 2020–21 school year, the district, comprised of 12 schools, had an enrollment of 10,786 students and 898.7 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.0:1.The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "A", the lowest of eight groupings. The school serves students from all of Middlesex County. As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 274 students and 21.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 13.0:1. There were 118 students (43.1% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 41 (15.0% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

The Perth Amboy Refinery is a refinery built in 1920. It is between Convery Boulevard and State Street in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, adjacent to the Outerbridge Crossing. Via rail it is served by Conrail's Chemical Coast and the former Perth Amboy and Woodbridge lines. Oil tankers and lighter can reach the refinery along the Arthur Kill.

Maurer is residential neighbourhood and industrial district of Perth Amboy in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Its name is derived from the "company town" built there in 1876. It is north of the Route 440 approach to the Outerbridge Crossing and south of the Perth Amboy Refinery, which began in 1920 as the Barber Asphalt Company. For a time it was known as Barber, a name which has fallen out of use The eastern area along the waterfront was active during World War II in building and decommissioning ships for the U.S. Navy. One of the primary ship builders during World War II was the New Jersey Shipbuilding Company. The community also housed the American Smelting and Refining Company.

Simpson United Methodist Church is a historic church at High and Jefferson Streets in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1866 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 6, 1979.

The statue of General George Washington was a gift of the Scandinavians of Perth Amboy and dedicated on February 22, 1896.
