Battle of La Guaira (1812)

La Guaira (Spanish: [la ˈɣwajɾa] (listen)) is the capital city of the Venezuelan state of the same name (formerly named Vargas) and the country's main port. It was founded in 1577 as an outlet for Caracas, 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the southeast. The town and the port were badly damaged during the December 1999 floods and mudslides that affected much of the region. The city hosts its own professional baseball team in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, the Tiburones de La Guaira. They have won seven national championships since their founding in 1962.

The Battle of La Guaira or La Guayra, took place on 2 March 1743 in the Caribbean, off the coast of La Guaira, present day Venezuela. La Guaira was a port of the Royal Gipuzkoan Company of Caracas, whose ships had rendered great assistance to the Spanish navy during War of Jenkins' Ear in carrying troops, arms, stores and ammunition from Spain to her colonies, and its destruction would be a severe blow both to the Company and the Spanish Government. A British expeditionary fleet under Sir Charles Knowles was defeated, and the expedition ended in failure. 600 men were killed, among whom was the captain of HMS Burford, and many of the ships were badly damaged or lost. Knowles was therefore unable to proceed to Puerto Cabello until he had refitted.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of La Guaira (Latin: Dioecesis Guairiensis) is a diocese located in the city of La Guaira in the Ecclesiastical province of Caracas in Venezuela.

Estadio Jorge Luis García Carneiro (formerly Estadio Fórum La Guaira) is a baseball stadium located in Macuto, Vargas, Venezuela and the current home of the Tiburones de La Guaira. It has a capacity of 14,300, along with 1200 parking spaces. The stadium had long been planned as the Tiburones had been playing in Estadio Universitario de Caracas, which is not located in La Guaira, sharing games there with the Leones del Caracas. The stadium was originally going to be called Estadio Carlos "Café" Martínez after the baseball player born in La Guaira who also played for the team. After 82 months of being built from 2013 to 2020, the stadium was formally inaugurated by president Nicolás Maduro on January 5, 2020, and finally played its first LVBP game on November 29, 2020, an 8–1 win for the Tiburones over the visiting Tigres de Aragua, with first pitch going at 1:30PM and the game taking 3hrs and 10mins. The stadium was renamed to honour the former governor of La Guaira Jorge Luis García Carneiro in January 2022 following his death on May 22, 2021. The stadium, along with the newly built La Rinconada Baseball Stadium will host the 2023 Caribbean Series in Greater Caracas.

The 1812 Caracas earthquake took place in Venezuela on March 26 (on Maundy Thursday) at 4:37 p.m. It measured 7.7 on the Richter magnitude scale. It caused extensive damage in Caracas, La Guaira, Barquisimeto, San Felipe, and Mérida. An estimated 15,000–20,000 people perished as a result, in addition to incalculable material damage.The seismic movement was so significant that in a zone named Valecillo, a new lake was formed and the river Yurubí was dammed up. Numerous rivulets changed their course in the Caracas valley, which was flooded with dirty water.Based on contemporary descriptions, the earthquake is believed to have consisted of two seismic shocks occurring within the span of 30 minutes. The first destroyed Caracas and the second Mérida, where it was raining when the shock occurred.

Macuto is a seaside city in Vargas state, Venezuela. The city has a long history of attracting Venezuelan political leaders and artists, and popular tourist site today.

La Guaira State (Spanish: Estado La Guaira; Estado Vargas, IPA: [esˈtaðo ˈβaɾɣas]), officially La Guaira, and known until 2019 as Vargas State is one of the 23 states of Venezuela. Formerly named after Venezuela's first non-military president, José María Vargas, Vargas comprises a coastal region in the north of Venezuela, bordering Aragua to the west, Miranda to the east, the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Capital District to the south. It is home to both the country's largest seaport and airport. The state capital is La Guaira. The Litoral Varguense conurbation is the principal urban agglomeration in the state, which is part of the Greater Caracas Area. In 1999, the geographic center of La Guaira state suffered major floods and landslides, known as La Tragedia de Vargas (the Vargas tragedy), causing major losses of life and property, and resulting in forced population movements, including the virtual disappearance of some small towns. Thousands died, and many more fled the area to other states. The state owed its previous name to José María Vargas, Venezuela's first civilian president, although this was changed on June 14, 2019 to only La Guaira.

Plaza Sucre is a Caracas Metro station on Line 1. It was opened on 2 January 1983 as part of the inaugural section of Line 1 between Propatria and La Hoyada. The station is between Pérez Bonalde and Gato Negro.

The National Pantheon of Venezuela (Panteón Nacional de Venezuela) is a final resting place for national heroes. The Pantheon (Latin Pantheon, from Greek Pantheon, meaning "Temple of all the Gods") was created in the 1870s on the site of the ruined Santísima Trinidad church from 1744 on the northern edge of the old town of Caracas, Venezuela. The entire central nave is dedicated to Simón Bolívar, with the altar's place taken by the hero's bronze sarcophagus, while lesser luminaries are relegated to the aisles. The national pantheon's vault is covered with 1930s paintings depicting scenes from Bolívar's life, and the huge crystal chandelier glittering overhead was installed in 1883 on the centennial of his birth. The Pantheon was reopened in 2013 after a 3 year long process of expansion and restoration.
