The Grand Forks Near Southside Historic District is a 182-acre (74 ha) historic district in Grand Forks, North Dakota that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2004.Many of the district's subdivisions were platted in 1878 in anticipation of railroad construction. Development was spurred by the arrival of the Great Northern Railroad in 1880 and a branch line of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1885. The construction of Belmont Elementary School in 1887 and South Junior High School in 1932 were important developments in the area's later history. Significant growth of the district ended circa 1942.Architectural styles in the district include Mid 19th Century Revival and Late Victorian architecture. Joseph Bell DeRemer is among the architects who designed district buildings.When first listed, the district included 423 contributing buildings, one contributing structure and one contributing object. Also included are 183 non-contributing buildings. The Dinnie Apartments, built in 1903, which were individually listed on the NRHP in 1985, are included in the district. In 2006 the district was increased to identify a house built in 1913 with Prairie School and Foursquare architecture as an additional contributing property.

In proceeding years it had been the Richardson House (by 1884), a subdivided residence (by 1896), the Hall Hotel (from around 1906 until at least 1938), Hotel Apartments (1940), Hall Apartments (1942–88), and Bachellor Apartments (1989–97).The listing was proposed in a 1981 study of Downtown Grand Forks historical resources., and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.The structure was heavily damaged after the 1997 Red River flood and destroyed by fire in 2000. The location is now occupied by a dike. It was officially delisted from the National Register in 2018.

The river begins on the western side of the Lower Red Lake and flows westward. After passing through Thief River Falls, Red Lake Falls, and Crookston, the river merges with the Red River of the North in East Grand Forks. The total length of the river is 193 miles (311 km) The term "Forks" in Grand Forks comes from this forking (confluence) of the Red and Red Lake rivers near downtown Grand Forks.As a tributary of the Red River, the Red Lake River contributed to the heavy flooding of Greater Grand Forks in 1997. The river also caused damage in its own right, albeit less severe, in Crookston.

The Masonic Center (also known as the Masonic Temple) is a Renaissance style building in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It was designed by architect Joseph Bell DeRemer and was constructed by the Dinnie Brothers in 1913. It replaced the first Masonic Temple in Grand Forks, which had burned, and which was later reconstructed as the Stratford Building. This building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
