Mills House is a historic home located at Rome in Oneida County, New York. It is an eclectic High Victorian Gothic style brick residence built in 1877. It has a 2+1⁄2-story, gable-roofed main block and hip-roofed, square, brick kitchen wing. It features a corner tower with pyramidal roof.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Zion Church is a historic Episcopal church building located in Rome, Oneida County, New York. The church was designed by noted national church architect, Richard Upjohn, (1802-1878), built in 1850. It is a three-by-four-bay structure built of bluestone in the Gothic Revival style. Located adjacent is the stone "Clarke Memorial Hall" designed by local designer Frederick Hubbard and built a quarter-century later in 1884–1885.It was listed in 1997 on the National Register of Historic Places which is maintained by the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Park Service.

Rome Elks Lodge No. 96, also known as the Benjamin Leonard House, is a historic Elk's lodge located at Rome in Oneida County, New York. It consists of an asymmetrical, early Italianate style brick main section (c. 1848), with a large rectangular rear addition (1932), and a sun porch and projecting Classical Revival style portico (1926). The portico features two Doric order fluted columns. It was originally built as a dwelling, but rehabilitated in 1926 for use as an Elk's Lodge.: 5, 8 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Gansevoort–Bellamy Historic District is a national historic district located at Rome in Oneida County, New York, USA. The district includes ten contributing buildings, two contributing structures and two contributing objects. Located within the district are the former Rome City Hall, U.S. Post Office, Oneida County Courthouse and St. Peter's Catholic Church.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Jervis Public Library is a historic library building located in Rome in Oneida County, New York. It was built in 1858 as the residence of John B. Jervis (1795–1885). The original house is a rectangular, 2+1⁄2-story brick structure with a slate-covered gable roof and cupola. The facade features a 2-story portico supported by four massive Doric order brick columns. A 2-story library extension was added in 1926 and in 1967 a modern library facility was added. Also on the property is a 2-story carriage house built about 1860.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Rome is a city in Oneida County, New York, United States, located in the central part of the state. The population was 32,127 at the 2020 census. Rome is one of two principal cities in the Utica–Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area, which lies in the "Leatherstocking Country" made famous by James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, set in frontier days before the American Revolutionary War. Rome is in New York's 22nd congressional district. The city developed at an ancient portage site of Native Americans, including the historic Iroquois nations. This portage continued to be strategically important to Europeans, who also used the main 18th and 19th-century waterways, based on the Mohawk and Hudson rivers, that connected New York City and the Atlantic seaboard to the Great Lakes. The original European settlements developed around fortifications erected in the 1750s to defend the waterway, in particular the British Fort Stanwix (1763) built in New York. Following the American Revolution, the settlement began to grow with the construction of the Rome Canal in 1796, to connect Wood Creek (leading from Lake Ontario) and the headwaters of the Mohawk River. In the same year the state created the Town of Rome as a section of Oneida County. For a time, the small community next to the canal was informally known as Lynchville, after the original owner of the property, the prominent wine merchant Dominick Lynch.The New York State Legislature converted the Town of Rome into a city on February 23, 1870. The residents have called Rome the City of American History.

The John F. Kennedy Civic Arena (also known as Kennedy Arena) is an indoor ice skating and ice hockey arena located in Rome, New York. The arena was home to the Copper City Chiefs of the North East Hockey League during the league's failed 2007–2008 season. The arena would have been home to the Eastern Professional Hockey League franchise, but the team folded before the season. During the 2010–2011 season, it was home to the Rome Frenzy of the Federal Hockey League. The John F. Kennedy Civic Arena is one of the City of Rome’s most popular venues. It was originally constructed in 1963, opened in 1964, and renovated in 2008. The arena hosts numerous figure skating and ice hockey events, as well as learn-to-skate programs for youths. It is home to the Rome Free Academy varsity hockey team, which plays its home games at the 1,200-seat facility. The arena is a regional facility, used primarily for ice hockey and figure skating from October through March. The primary users are the Ford Stanwix Hockey Association, a not-for-profit youth hockey organization; Rome Free Academy; Rome Catholic High School; a local figure skating club; various local groups and organizations, and the general public. The arena is located at 500 W. Embargo Street in the City of Rome. It is co-located with the Municipal Pool. Municipal Pool is a community facility, open from June through early September. It includes a standard-size recreational swimming pool, two water play slides, and a bathhouse with restrooms. It meets the recreational swimming needs of west Rome. The arena and pool are served by a large parking lot off of Jay and Embargo Streets with space for more than 150 vehicles. A smaller lot on the arena's west side is used primarily by employees and hockey officials.

Fort Stanwix was a colonial fort whose construction commenced on August 26, 1758, under the direction of British General John Stanwix, at the location of present-day Rome, New York, but was not completed until about 1762. The bastion fort was built to guard a portage known as the Oneida Carry during the French and Indian War. Fort Stanwix National Monument, a reconstructed structure built by the National Park Service, now occupies the site.Fort Stanwix is historically significant because of its successful defense by American troops during an August 1777 siege. The fort had been built by the British in 1758 at a strategic site along the water route from Lake Ontario to the Hudson River. After American forces captured and rebuilt the fort during the American Revolutionary War, they were besieged by a British army that invaded from Canada via Lake Ontario, hoping to reach the Hudson River. The British force abandoned the siege, a consequence that helped lead to the defeat of a larger British army during the Saratoga campaign. Fort Stanwix was also the site of the 1768 Treaty of Fort Stanwix between Britain and Native American tribes, as well as of the 1784 Treaty of Fort Stanwix between the tribes and the American government. Besides the fort reconstruction itself, the national monument includes three short trails that encircle it, one of which follows a portion of the Oneida Carry. The Marinus Willett Collections Management and Education Center preserves the monument's 485,000 artifacts and documents, displays exhibits about Fort Stanwix and the Mohawk Valley, and serves as a regional tourism center.

The siege of Fort Stanwix (also known as Fort Schuyler) began on August 2, 1777 and ended on August 22, 1777. Fort Stanwix, at the western end of the Mohawk River Valley, was a primary defense point for the Continental Army against the British and indigenous forces aligned against them during the American Revolutionary War. The fort was occupied by Continental Army forces from New York and Massachusetts under the command of Colonel Peter Gansevoort. The besieging force was composed of British regulars, Loyalist soldiers, Hessians, and indigenous warriors, under the command of Brigadier General Barry St. Leger. St. Leger's expedition was a diversion in support of Lieutenant General John Burgoyne's campaign to take control of the Hudson River Valley to the east. One attempt at relief was thwarted early in the siege when a force of New York militia under Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer was ambushed on August 6 at the Battle of Oriskany by a large detachment of St. Leger's forces. While the battle did not involve the fort's garrison, some of its occupants sortied and plundered the nearly empty indigenous and Loyalist camps, which was a blow to the morale of St. Leger's indigenous allies. The siege was finally broken when American reinforcements under the command of Major General Benedict Arnold approached, and Arnold used a ruse to convince the besiegers that he had a much larger force. This misinformation, combined with the departure of many of the indigenous warriors, led St. Leger to abandon the effort and withdraw. St. Leger's failure to advance on Albany contributed to Burgoyne's surrender following the Battles of Saratoga in October 1777. Although St. Leger reached Fort Ticonderoga with some of his forces in late September, he was too late to aid Burgoyne.

The New York State School for the Deaf (NYSSD) was founded in Rome, New York in 1874 by Alphonso Johnson, a graduate and former teacher of the NY Institution for the Deaf. The school now operates under the New York State Board of Regents.

The Rome Arsenal was a 3 acres (12,000 m2) fortification complex near Rome, New York. It was built in 1814, and used until 1873. Rome Arsenal included barracks, arsenal, magazine, workshops, and other buildings, built to support American forces waging the War of 1812. Major James Dalleba of Ordnance Department of United States Army supervised construction.Arsenal House, also known as Commandant's House, is a historic home located at Rome in Oneida County, New York. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, brick structure on a stone foundation, 30 by 36 feet (9.1 by 11.0 m), in the Federal style. At a later date, 1-story wings were added plus front and rear porches. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Rome station is a Neoclassical train station served by Amtrak. It is located on 6599 Martin Street in Rome, New York between the NY 26-49-69 bridge and Mill Road south of the Erie Canal. Four Empire Service trains (two westbound to Niagara Falls and two eastbound to Penn Station in New York City) stop at Rome, as do a pair of Maple Leaf trains (one eastbound, one westbound) between Penn Station and Toronto Union Station for a total of six daily departures. CENTRO of Oneida's Rome bus routes 4 and 7 also stop at the station.
