The Derry Township School District is a midsized, suburban public school district which serves Derry Township in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The district includes the unincorporated Village of Hershey. Derry Township School District encompasses approximately 27 square miles (70 km2). According to 2000 federal census data, it serves a resident population of 21,273. By 2010, the district's population increased to 24,690 people. The educational attainment levels for the Derry Township School District population (25 years old and over) were 94% high school graduates and 51.4% college graduates. Pennsylvania State University's Hershey Medical Center is located within the district boundaries. Derry Township School District is one of the 500 public school districts of Pennsylvania. According to the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center, 13.6% of the district's pupils lived at 185% or below the Federal Poverty level as shown by their eligibility for the federal free or reduced price school meal programs in 2012. In 2009, Derry Township School District residents' per capita income was $16,811, while the median family income was $40,063.
