Oshima Subprefecture

Shiryōkaku (四稜郭) (literally, "four-point fort") is a fort in the city of Hakodate in southern Hokkaidō, Japan. It was constructed in April 1869, during the Battle of Hakodate, three kilometres to the northeast of Goryōkaku by two hundred soldiers of the former Tokugawa shogunate and a hundred local villagers, likely under the direction of Ōtori Keisuke. Shiryōkaku has four bastions , and is sometimes known as the "butterfly fort" as opposed to the "star fort". The designated historic site area is 21,500 m², while the fort itself covers approximately 2,300 m², stretching approximately a hundred metres east to west and seventy metres north to south; the earthworks rise to a height of 3 m with a width of 5.4 m; they are surrounded by a dry moat 0.9 m deep and 2.7 m wide; the entrance is to the southwest. Shiryōkaku fell to government forces within a few hours on 11 May 1869. In 1934 the area was designated an Historic Site. Repairs were carried out from 1970-2 and again in 1990.

Hakodate City Central Library (函館市中央図書館, Hakodate-shi Chūō Toshokan) is a public library in Hakodate, Hokkaidō, Japan. The library is known in particular for its important collection of northern materials and for its Takuboku Library (啄木文庫).

The Battle of Hakodate (箱館戦争, Hakodate Sensō) was fought in Japan from December 4, 1868 to June 27, 1869, between the remnants of the Tokugawa shogunate army, consolidated into the armed forces of the rebel Ezo Republic, and the armies of the newly formed Imperial government (composed mainly of forces of the Chōshū and the Satsuma domains). It was the last stage of the Boshin War, and occurred around Hakodate in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaidō. In Japanese, it is also known as the Battle of Goryokaku (五稜郭の戦い, Goryokaku no tatakai).

The Republic of Ezo (蝦夷共和國, Ezo Kyōwakoku) was a short-lived separatist state established in 1869 on the island of Ezo, now Hokkaido, by a part of the former military of the Tokugawa shogunate at the end of the Bakumatsu period in Japan. It was the first government to attempt to institute democracy in Japan, though voting was allowed only to the samurai caste. The Republic of Ezo existed for five months before being annexed by the newly established Empire of Japan.

Goryōkaku (五稜郭; lit. 'five-point fort') is a star fort in the Japanese city of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. The fortress was completed in 1866. It was the main headquarters of the short-lived Republic of Ezo.

Goryōkaku Station (五稜郭駅, Goryōkaku-eki) is a railway station on the Hakodate Main Line and South Hokkaido Railway Line in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan, operated by Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) and South Hokkaido Railway Company. The station is named after Goryōkaku fort, located about two kilometers from the station.

Sasanagare Dam (Japanese: 笹流ダム) is a buttress dam located in Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan. The dam is used for water supply. The catchment area of the dam is 5.4 km2. The dam impounds about 7 ha of land when full and can store 606 thousand cubic meters of water. The construction of the dam was completed in 1923.

Future University Hakodate (公立はこだて未来大学, Kōritsu Hakodate Mirai Daigaku) is a public university in the city of Hakodate, Hokkaidō, Japan, established in 2000. The university's School of Systems Information Science is separated into two departments: the Department of Media Architecture and the Department of Complex and Intelligent Systems.

Hakodate Museum of Art, Hokkaido (北海道立函館美術館, Hokkaidō-ritsu Hakodate Bikutsukan) opened in Hakodate, Hokkaidō, Japan in 1986. The collection focuses on works from southern Hokkaidō, including paintings by Kakizaki Hakyō and calligraphy by Kaneko Ōtei (金子鴎亭), and special exhibitions are also mounted.
