Hancock, West Virginia

The Battle of Hancock was fought during the Confederate Romney Expedition of the American Civil War on January 5 and 6, 1862, near Hancock, Maryland. Major General Stonewall Jackson of the Confederate States Army, commanding his own Valley District and Brigadier General William W. Loring's force known as the Confederate Army of the Northwest, began moving against Union Army forces in the Shenandoah Valley area on January 1. After light fighting near Bath, Virginia, Jackson's men reached the vicinity of Hancock late on January 4 and briefly fired on the town with artillery. Union Brigadier General Frederick W. Lander refused a Confederate request to surrender on January 5, and that day and the next saw exchanges of artillery fire between the two sides. The Confederates burned a bridge on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad on January 5, but withdrew on the 7th. Jackson later moved against Romney, Virginia, and occupied the town on January 15 after Union soldiers abandoned it. Romney was ordered abandoned on January 30 by the Confederate States Secretary of War after Loring complained about Jackson's orders.

Warm Spring Run is an 11.9-mile-long (19.2 km) non-navigable tributary stream of the Potomac River in Morgan County of West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. It rises on the eastern side of Warm Springs Ridge (1,115 feet) and parallels U.S. Route 522 for most of its course. Warm Spring Run enters the Potomac River at Hancock. Warm Spring Run is primarily fed by springs on Warm Springs Ridge, the best-known of these being the springs at Berkeley Springs State Park in Berkeley Springs through which it flows.

Hancock is a town in Washington County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,557 at the 2020 census. The Western Maryland community is notable for being located at the narrowest part of the state. The north–south distance from the Pennsylvania state line to the West Virginia state line is only 1.8 miles (2.9 km) at Hancock.

Hancock Middle-Senior High School, also known as Hancock High, is a public middle/high school (grades 6 to 12) in Hancock, Washington County, Maryland, United States. Its principal is Jenny Ruppenthal. It enrolls 262 students as of 2016 and School Day is 8:30 to 3:30.

Tonoloway Creek, also known as Great Tonoloway Creek, is a 31.4-mile-long (50.5 km) tributary stream of the Potomac River in the U.S. states of Maryland and Pennsylvania. Tonoloway Creek empties into the Potomac River at Hancock, Maryland.

Fort Tonoloway State Park is an undeveloped Maryland state park located near present-day Hancock. Fort Tonoloway was a frontier fort built in 1755 by Lt. Thomas Stoddert and men from the Maryland State Militia. The fort was also known as Stoddert's Fort. It was abandoned in 1756 when Fort Frederick was constructed.The state park was at one time leased to the Boy Scouts. It is awaiting archaeological investigation before its use as a recreational facility can be assessed.

Burnt Factory is an unincorporated community in Morgan County, West Virginia north of Berkeley Springs. It is located along Sand Mine Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 38/1) off Hancock Road (U.S. Route 522) and is the site of the U.S. Silica Company's Berkeley Springs plant. U.S. Silica is a producer of ground and unground silica sand, kaolin clay, and aplite. These materials are extracted from Warm Spring Ridge directly across U.S. Route 522 from the facility in Burnt Factory.

The Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT) is a 28-mile (45 km) shared-use rail trail in the U.S. state of Maryland that follows the former right-of-way of the Western Maryland Railway (WM) between Fort Frederick State Park and Little Orleans via Hancock, paralleling the C&O Canal and Potomac River. The asphalt-paved trail is suitable for walking, jogging, biking, rollerblading, country skiing, and snowshoeing.

Spohrs Crossroads is an unincorporated community along Martinsburg Road (West Virginia Route 9) to the west of Sleepy Creek in Morgan County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The community was originally named Spohrs Cross Roads for the local Spohr family. It is sometimes erroneously known as Stohrs Cross Roads or Stohrs Crossroads. Spohrs "Crossroads" is formed by Martinsburg Road's intersection with the Potomac-Virginia Line Road, Morgan County Route 8. North of Spohrs Crossroads, Morgan County Route 8 is known as Potomac Road, and south of the crossroads, it is known as Spohr's Road. It reaches the Virginia state line at Unger where it is known as Virginia Line Road.

Jimtown is an unincorporated community in Morgan County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Because of its proximity to the north of the Town of Bath (Berkeley Springs) limits, Jimtown is generally considered a neighborhood of Berkeley Springs. The community is also referred to as Jimstown.

Ridersville is an unincorporated community between Berkeley Springs and Stohrs Crossroads along Martinsburg Road (West Virginia Route 9) in Morgan County, West Virginia. It is located on Pious Ridge (804 ft) where Pious Ridge Road (CR 4) and Peter Yost Road (CR 9/8) intersect with WV 9. Ridersville sprang up in the 19th century as a small farming community along the Martinsburg Road with a general store. It had its own operating post office until it was closed in 1903 due to the community's proximity to Berkeley Springs. During its period as an independent agrarian town, it was known as Friendship, Rider Store, Riderville, and finally as Ridersville. Today, it is merely a growing residential area of Berkeley Springs.
