The Lost Planet (Des Moines)

The Owl's Head Historic District is a residential area located on the west side of Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Among its 50 buildings is the former Iowa governor's mansion. The district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

The Jay Norwood and Genevieve Pendleton Darling House is an historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The residence was the home of cartoonist Ding Darling, who worked for The Des Moines Register and whose cartoons were syndicated in over 100 newspapers across the country. In the early 1930s, he became involved in the conservation movement, especially wildlife conservation. His advocacy was reflected in his cartoons. Part of his conservation legacy in Iowa is the Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit program that he initiated at Iowa State College and the expansion of the research facilities at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory.The house sits behind Terrace Hill, the residence of Iowa's Governors. The Darlings did not build the house, but they did make some changes when they owned it. The original house and the first major addition was the work of two prominent Des Moines architectural firms, Hailett and Rawson and Proudfoot, Rawson & Souers. Darling had architect John W. Brooks design the east wing and main entrance. He also chose the house's dark brown color. The changes Darling made to the house mixed elegance with earthiness and allowed it to blend in with its natural surroundings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 as a part of the Conservation Movement in Iowa MPS.

Terrace Hill, also known as Hubbell Mansion, Benjamin F. Allen House or the Iowa Governor's Mansion, is the official residence of the governor of Iowa, United States. Located at 2300 Grand Avenue in Des Moines, it is an example of Second Empire architecture. The home measures 18,000 square feet (1,600 m2). It sits on a hill overlooking downtown Des Moines, and has a 90-foot (27 m) tower that offers a commanding view of the city. The building's steeply pitched mansard roof, open verandas, long and narrow and frequently paired windows, and bracketed eaves give this house an irreplaceable design. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003.

The Albert Baird Cummins House, also known as Terrace Tower, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This 21/2-story stone and stucco Queen Anne was built in 1893. It is significant because of its association with Albert Baird Cummins who lived here from the time it was built until 1920. A Republican, Cummins served as Governor of Iowa from 1902 to 1908 and as United States Senator from 1908 until his death in 1926. He was a Progressive who supported the "Iowa Idea," which sought to destroy trusts by removing tariffs from trust made products. As a senator he sponsored the Esch-Cummins Act that returned the railroads to private control after the government took them over during World War I. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Gray's Lake Park is a park containing Gray's Lake in Des Moines, Iowa and covers 166.6 acres. Located just southwest of downtown at 2101 Fleur Dr, Des Moines, IA. With over 1 million people visiting the park each year, it is the city's most known and most visited recreation area. The park has a trail encompassing the lake that is 1.9 miles long and a pedestrian bridge over part of the lake. The park is linked with the system of trails that travel throughout the city and nearby Water Works Park.The lake spans 96.00 acres and is 16.4 ft at its deepest point. Gray's Lakes’ popular fish are Black Crappie, Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Common Carp, Freshwater Drum, Largemouth Bass, River Carpsucker, White Crappie, Wiper, and Yellow Bass.The Kruidenier Trail pedestrian bridge that crosses the lake was designed by Cal Lewis. The bridge is 1,400 feet long, 16 feet wide and goes over the lake connecting two parts of the path around the lake. Lights on both sides of the bridge illuminate the path of the bridge at night with many colors.The park contains a sandy beach on the west side of the lake, a swing set, a boat rental stand, and two entrances to the park with their respective parking lots and restrooms.

Bryn Mawr Apartments is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Built in 1918, it is significant as an example of the "kitchenette" type apartment building from the early years of the city's apartment boom. Designed by the prominent Des Moines architectural firm of Proudfoot, Bird and Rawson, "it is representative of the effort to increase profit on residential construction by eliminating the number of rooms in each unit."The three-story brick structure contains 26 efficiency units. Each floor has eight units with two units in the basement, although one of the basement units is not historic. All of the units feature a combined sleeping/living space, dining room, kitchenette, bathroom, and closets. Historically, a Murphy bed was included in each unit. Each unit opens to the central corridor. In addition to the two units, the basement also includes storage, laundry, and maintenance areas. The exterior features a variety of window openings and a cast concrete and brick cornice. The main entrance is in the center of the main façade features a cast stone surround with pilasters that support a lintel entablature with the building's name carved in it. The apartment building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

The Elmwood-The Oaks-The Birches, also known as the Grand Trees Apartments, are three historic buildings located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The local architectural firm of Vorse, Kraetsch & Kraetsch designed three-story brick structures that were built in 1923. The buildings, which together contain 93 units, are connected by courtyards and stone archways. Above the main entrances are imprints of the trees' leaves - elm, oak, and birch - in the stonework. Parking lots for the apartments are located behind the buildings. A $16.9 million historic renovation was begun in 2021 and will include adding elevators, which the buildings did not have. The buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

The Crawford House is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. R.A. Crawford was a local banker who hired the Des Moines architectural firm of Liebbe, Nourse & Rasmussen to design this house, which was completed in 1896. It is located in a section of the city that contains other large residences that calls attention to the city's economic expansion. The 2½-story, brick structure is a combination of the Queen Anne and the Neoclassical styles. It features alternating colors of brick, limestone stringcourses, and two round towers with conical roofs that flank the main facade. The single-family home was converted into a funeral home in 1945. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

St. Joseph Academy (SJA) was a Catholic all-girls high school in Des Moines, Iowa. It merged with Dowling Catholic High School in 1972.

The Ingersoll Place Plat Historic District is located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2000. The historic significance of the district is based on the concentration of bungalows and square houses as well as a mix of subtypes.

The Mahnke House is an historical residential building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The house was built by prolific Des Moines builder Fred W. Weitz in 1909 in the Prairie School style. The exterior is covered in Flemish bond brick veneer. It features a hip roof, a single-story west side solarium, a rear porch and a flat-roofed centered front portico with a raised entrance and square paned window lights. George and Emma Mahnke owned the house between 1909 and 1952 when they transferred the property to the Des Moines Annual Conference of the Methodist Church. The house then became the residence of the organization's superintendents. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and it was included as a contributing property in the Ingersoll Place Plat Historic District in 2000.

Des Moines University (DMU) is a private medical school in Des Moines, Iowa. Founded in 1898, Des Moines University is the second oldest osteopathic medical school and the fifteenth largest medical school in the United States. DMU's three colleges – the College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, and College of Health Sciences – offer nine academic degrees, including master’s and doctorate degrees.Annual enrollment is approximately 1,550 students, and the university has more than over 14,000 total alumni in all 50 states.The unaffiliated Des Moines College used the name Des Moines University during the 1920s until its closure in 1929.
