Variant names for Hutton include Huttons Switch Station and Kindness.The population was 86 at the 2010 census, which was up from a population of 29 recorded in the 2000 census.Hutton is located on Maryland Route 39 adjacent to the West Virginia border. MD 39 leads east 6 miles (10 km) to Oakland, the Garrett County seat, and West Virginia Route 7 leads northwest from the state line 4 miles (6 km) to Terra Alta, West Virginia. The Hutton CDP has an area of 0.17 square miles (0.44 km2), all of it land. The community is in the valley of Snowy Creek, a southeast-flowing tributary of the Youghiogheny River.

It is located to the east of Terra Alta and is the home of Hopemont State Hospital, originally created as the West Virginia State Tuberculosis Sanitarium. Crellin is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Garrett County, Maryland, United States, with a population of 264 as of the 2010 census. Crellin Elementary School is located in the community, notable for winning the U.S. Green School Award of 2007.Crellin was built as a company town, having been home to a large coal mining and lumber operation at the turn of the 20th century. The Preston Railroad, which had been named for Preston County, West Virginia, which the railroad crossed into several times along its route, was also headquartered in Crellin, but closed down in the late 1950s. While the town survives today, very little remains to show that the original lumbering, mining, and railroad operations ever existed. Crellin is located in western Garrett County, just 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the Maryland–West Virginia border. The community is in the valley of the Youghiogheny River and is built into a loop of Snowy Creek where the creek joins the Youghiogheny. Maryland Route 39 (Hutton Road) leads east 4 miles (6 km) to Oakland, the Garrett County seat, and northwest 3 miles (5 km) to Corinth, West Virginia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Crellin CDP has an area of 0.70 square miles (1.82 km2), all of it land.

Oakland station is a historic railroad station located at Oakland, Garrett County, Maryland. It is a large brick structure with a two-story central section featuring a cylindrical tower with a domed cap and one-story wings extending from each end along the railroad tracks. It was designed by Baldwin and Pennington, and built in 1884 by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) across the tracks and a meadow from the Railroad's Oakland Hotel, which opened in 1876, to support the development of Oakland and Garrett County as a resort area. It is one of the finest remaining examples in Maryland of a Queen Anne style railroad station.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Garrett County, Maryland in 1974 as the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Station, Oakland. It was revived for service on Amtrak's Shenandoah between 1976 and 1981. The city of Oakland bought the station in 1998, and in 2000 restored it with help from the State of Maryland. The station is now the Oakland B&O Museum and is run by the Garrett County Historical Society.The Museum features the Baltimore & Ohio 476, a 2-8-0 Consolidation-type steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in December, 1920. The engine started life with the Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad as #40, and became #76 when that railroad was acquired by the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway (Frisco). After performing freight service for years, the engine was sold in 1947 to the Mississippian Railway where it retained the Frisco number. Following several further changes in ownership, the engine was acquired by the Oakland B&O Museum in 2018 where it was renumbered and relettered as the Baltimore & Ohio 476 as representative of a typical B&O locomotive. The B&O did run 2-8-0 steam engines as its Class E locomotives. The tender mated with the locomotive was previously in operational service with the Arcade & Attica Railroad's Engine #18, and was acquired by the museum in 2018 in a swap.

It is a three-story, 1907–1908 neo-classical Renaissance Revival masonry structure in the form of a Latin Cross with a central rotunda and dome. The Courthouse was designed by James Riely Gordon (1863–1937), a New York architect who specialized in designing government buildings.The Garrett County Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Oakland Historic District is a national historic district in Oakland, Garrett County, Maryland. It is an L-shaped area in the central and older section of Oakland containing 206 buildings. They reflect the evolution of this rural county seat from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. It includes the Garrett County Courthouse, but the majority of the buildings are residential of frame construction and positioned with deep setbacks from the street, surrounded by large lawns. Several churches and schools and a library are scattered in the district.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Swallow Falls State Park is a public recreation area located on the west bank of the Youghiogheny River nine miles (14 km) northwest of Oakland in Garrett County, Maryland, in the United States. The state park features Maryland's highest free-falling waterfall, the 53-foot (16 m) Muddy Creek Falls, as well as smaller waterfalls on the Youghiogheny River and Tolivar Creek. The park is notable for its stand of old hemlock trees, some more than 300 years old, "the last stand of its kind in Maryland."
