Aurora, West Virginia

Cathedral State Park is the largest virgin timber tract remaining in West Virginia. The park features trees of up to 90 feet in height and 16 feet in circumference. Located on 132 acres (53 ha) about one mile (1.6 km) east of the town of Aurora and five miles west of Redhouse, Maryland, Cathedral is a mixed forest of predominantly eastern hemlock. Rhine Creek runs through the park.The National Park Service has designated the park as a National Natural Landmark in 1965.The park is under significant threat from the hemlock woolly adelgid, which has been detected within 20 miles (32 km) of the park.

Gaymont is a historic home located near Aurora, Preston County, West Virginia. It was built about 1896 as a summer resort cottage. It is a two-story, T-shaped dwelling constructed of wood, wood shingles, wood half-timbers, and cut stone. It displays eclectic overtones of American Craftsman, Rustic, and Queen Anne architectural styles. It features a low-pitched, cross-gabled, and hipped roof and wraparound, Queen Anne style verandah.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. It is located in the Brookside Historic District.

It encompasses 11 contributing buildings, 1 contributing structure, and 1 contributing site in the small community of Aurora. There are five properties included: Brookside Inn/Gaymont (c. 1895), the Brookside Cottages (c. 1885), Cathedral State Park, Brookside Farm (c. 1895-1905), and the Red Horse Tavern (1825). The community was an important example of a turn-of-the-20th century rural retreat with farm. Owners of the resort took advantage of its location close to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and created a respite from the city heat for residents of Washington, Baltimore, Cleveland and other cities.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Red Horse Tavern, also known as Brookside Inn and The Old Stone House, is a historic inn and tavern located near Aurora, Preston County, West Virginia. It was built between 1825 and 1827, as a dwelling. In 1841, it opened as a public inn to serve travelers on the Northwestern Turnpike. It is built of rubble stone, and has one large downstairs room and three upstairs rooms with an attic above them.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, with a boundary increase in 1979. It is located in the Brookside Historic District.

Crellin is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Garrett County, Maryland, United States, with a population of 264 as of the 2010 census. Crellin Elementary School is located in the community, notable for winning the U.S. Green School Award of 2007.Crellin was built as a company town, having been home to a large coal mining and lumber operation at the turn of the 20th century. The Preston Railroad, which had been named for Preston County, West Virginia, which the railroad crossed into several times along its route, was also headquartered in Crellin, but closed down in the late 1950s. While the town survives today, very little remains to show that the original lumbering, mining, and railroad operations ever existed. Crellin is located in western Garrett County, just 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the Maryland–West Virginia border. The community is in the valley of the Youghiogheny River and is built into a loop of Snowy Creek where the creek joins the Youghiogheny. Maryland Route 39 (Hutton Road) leads east 4 miles (6 km) to Oakland, the Garrett County seat, and northwest 3 miles (5 km) to Corinth, West Virginia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Crellin CDP has an area of 0.70 square miles (1.82 km2), all of it land.
