Peradeniya (Sinhala: පේරාදෙණිය, romanized: Pēradeniya; Tamil: பேராதனை, romanized: Pērātaṉai) is a suburb of the city of Kandy, about 30,000 inhabitants in Sri Lanka. It is situated on the A1 main road, just a few kilometres west of Kandy city centre. Peradeniya is supposed to take its name from pera (guava) and deniya (a plain).Peradeniya is famous for the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya. It is situated in a slope of the Mahaweli river and attracts many visitors from Sri Lanka as well as from abroad. Another key attribute of this suburb is the University of Peradeniya. Its buildings are of mixed colonial and traditional Sri Lankan/South Asian styles, and located amongst the lush vegetation of the hill country. The Department of Agriculture is also located here. The Sri Lanka Telecom Training Centre is situated here. West of the suburb lies the small historical town of Kadugannawa.

Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya, is one of the three hospitals in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. It is one of the leading community teaching hospitals in Sri Lanka, affiliated with the University of Peradeniya. In addition to delivering medical care to patients, it facilitates undergraduate training programmes for the university students studying in the faculties of Medicine, Dental Sciences and Allied Health Sciences. It was established in 1980.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya are about 5.5 km to the west of the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. In 2016, the garden was visited by 1.2 million locals and 400,000 foreign visitors. It is near the Mahaweli River (The longest river in Sri Lanka). It is renowned for its collection of orchids. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Attached to it is the "National Herbarium of Sri Lanka". The total area of the botanical garden is 147 acres (0.59 km2), at 460 meters above sea level, and with a 200-day annual rainfall. It is managed by the Department of national botanic gardens.

The National Herbarium at Peradeniya, near Kandy in the Central province of Sri Lanka, was started in about 1821 by Alexander Moon, who was the director of the Botanical Gardens there.

The University of Peradeniya library is a centrally administered network of libraries in the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. It is considered the oldest academic library in Sri Lanka and one of the largest libraries in Sri Lanka today.[b]

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya is one of the eight academic faculties at the university. It is the oldest engineering faculty in Sri Lanka. It offers full-time Undergraduate Courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science of engineering (B.Sc.Eng.), and several postgraduate degrees.

Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya is one of the nine faculties of University of Peradeniya and started in 2007. Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) was inaugurated on 16 January 2007. The faculty consists of six departments conducting B.Sc.degree programmes in Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Radiography/Radiotherapy. As the faculty offers professional degree programmes, students are introduced to basic concepts in medical sciences followed by mandatory hospital based training. All degree programmes consist of 120 credits curricula which have been designed in par with international standards. Several departments have established active foreign collaborations in teaching and research. This is the very first faculty of Allied Health Sciences in Sri Lanka.

Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya is one of the nine faculties of University of Peradeniya and the oldest agriculture faculty in Sri Lanka. It conducts undergraduate programs and the Post-graduate Institute of Agriculture, which is affiliated to the faculty conducts graduate programs in the field of agriculture. Faculty operates in two locations as main administration buildings are situated in the main campus of University of Peradeniya and a separate sub-campus is located in Mahailuppallama, North Central province of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1947 with an initial batch of 16. Mahailuppallama sub-campus was established in 1968.

Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya is the largest single faculty in the entire university system of Sri Lanka.

The Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya is one of the nine faculties of the University of Peradeniya. It was the first institution in Sri Lanka to offer a five-year undergraduate programme leading to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. The faculty conducts both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in dental sciences. In addition to the University of Peradeniya, an undergraduate dental program has also been established at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, making it the second institution in Sri Lanka to offer dental education at the undergraduate level. The only dental teaching hospital in Sri Lanka, the Peradeniya Dental (Teaching) Hospital functions as the clinical unit of the faculty. the Dental School of the University of Ceylon was established in 1943. It was moved from Colombo to Augusta Hill, Peradeniya in 1954. In 1974, Dental Schools was amalgamated into the Faculty of Medical, Dental & Veterinary Sciences of the Peradeniya Campus. This has since been reversed and the Faculty of Dental Sciences now functions independently. The teaching hospital was declared open and integrated to the faculty in 1998 as a Rs. 1.2 billion project.

The University of Peradeniya (Sinhala: පේරාදෙණිය විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය, Tamil: பேராதனைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம்) is a public university in Sri Lanka, funded by the University Grants Commission. It is the largest university in Sri Lanka, which was originally established as the University of Ceylon in 1942. The university was officially opened on 20 April 1954, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II, by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The University of Peradeniya hosts nine faculties, four postgraduate institutes (including the newly added Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences), 20 centres and units, 73 departments, and teaches about 12,000 students in the fields of Medicine, Agriculture, Arts, Science, Engineering, Dental Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Management, and Allied Health Sciences. It claims to have the largest government endowment by a higher education institution in Sri Lanka, based on its large staff and faculties/departments.

The Battle of Gannoruwa was a battle of the Sinhalese–Portuguese War fought in 1638 between the occupying Portuguese forces and the Sinhalese King's army at Gannoruwa in the District of Kandy, Sri Lanka. The Portuguese had attempted three times without success to capture the Kingdom of Kandy, in order to bring the entire island under their rule. In 1635, Rajasinghe II became the king of Kandy and started negotiations with the Dutch to obtain their help in driving out the Portuguese. The Portuguese hastened their efforts to take Kandy because of this, and Diogo de Melo de Castro, the Portuguese Captain General, tried to provoke the Sinhalese on several occasions. Melo seized an elephant presented to a merchant by the king, to which the king responded by seizing two of Melo's own horses. Following this incident, Melo assembled his troops and set out for Kandy. The city of Kandy was evacuated by the Sinhalese, and Melo's army found the city empty when they arrived. They sacked and burned the city, and started to return to Colombo. However, their way forward was blocked by the Sinhalese army at Gannoruwa. The Portuguese force was surrounded with all escape routes cut off. On 28 March 1638, the Sinhalese army attacked the Portuguese force, leaving only 33 Portuguese soldiers alive, along with a number of mercenaries. The heads of the killed Portuguese soldiers were piled before the Sinhalese king Rajasingha II. The battle, which ended in victory for the Sinhalese army, was the last battle fought between the Portuguese and the Sinhalese, and was also the final battle fought by the Kingdom of Kandy. The Portuguese were driven out of the country by the Dutch soon afterwards.
