French Creek (also known as the Venango River) is a tributary of the Allegheny River in northwestern Pennsylvania and western New York in the United States.

Fort Venango, a small British fort built in 1760 near the present-day site of Franklin, Pennsylvania, replaced Fort Machault, a French fort built at the confluence of French Creek and the Allegheny River. The French burned their fort in 1759 after abandoning it. They retreated to the north after learning of the French surrender to the British of Fort Niagara, near the end of the French and Indian War. About June 16, 1763, during Pontiac's War, this British fort was captured by Seneca and Mingo warriors. They killed the 12 to 16 soldiers of the fort garrison outright, except for the commander, Lieutenant Francis Gordon. The warriors forced him to write a letter detailing why the Indians had risen against the British. He recorded two complaints: that the British had not supplied the tribes with sufficient gunpowder for the past two years and that the English, contrary to their treaty promises, were keeping forts, and building new forts, in what the Crown had proclaimed to be reserved as exclusively Indian territory west of the Appalachian Mountains. The warriors subjected Gordon to ritual slow torture and burned him to death at the stake. They burnt Fort Venango to the ground.The British had named the fort after the nearby Lenape village, Venango. It was occupied by a portion of the people who spoke the Munsee dialect of the Delaware (or Lenape) language.

Fort Machault (, French: [maʃol]) was a fort built by the French in 1754 near the confluence of French Creek with the Allegheny River, in northwest Pennsylvania. (Present-day Franklin developed here later.) The fort helped the French control these waterways, part of what was known as the Venango Path from Lake Erie to the Ohio River. It was one of four forts designed to protect French access to the Ohio Country and connections between its northern and southern colonies. From north to south the forts were Fort Presque Isle (at Lake Erie), Fort Le Boeuf (at the south end of the portage leading to the head of French Creek), Fort Machault (at the confluence noted), and Fort Duquesne, at the Forks of the Ohio.

Franklin Historic District is a national historic district located at Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania. The district includes 380 contributing buildings in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Franklin. It includes commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional buildings. They are in a variety of popular architectural styles including Queen Anne, Greek Revival, and Federal. Notable non-residential buildings include the Venango County Courthouse (1867, 1931–32), County Jail, and First United Methodist Church.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

DeBence Antique Music World is a museum in Franklin, Pennsylvania whose collection contains more than 100 antique mechanical musical instruments, including music boxes, band organs, player pianos, a nickelodeon piano, as well as a number of other antiques. Many of the collection's mechanical instruments are rare; a number are among only a few manufactured, and a few are among the last in existence. Although the collection's value cannot be measured, an offer for a sum of multiple millions of dollars was once rejected.

Venango Regional Airport (IATA: FKL, ICAO: KFKL, FAA LID: FKL), also known as Chess Lamberton Field, is a public airport in western Pennsylvania, 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Franklin and about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Oil City. Both cities are in Venango County, which operates the airport. The airport had limited airline service, which was subsidized by the Essential Air Service program until October 2019. Per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 681 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008, 1,583 enplanements in 2009, and 1,380 in 2010. It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a general aviation facility (the commercial service category requires at least 2,500 enplanements per year).
