The Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant (Slovene: Termoelektrarna Šoštanj) is a big lignite, heating oil and natural gas fueled power station in Šoštanj, Slovenia with plate capacity of 1,029 MWe. Termoelektrarna Šoštanj (TEŠ) is fully owned by Holding Slovenske Elektrarne (HSE), which is 100% held by the Republic of Slovenia. New unit 6 is the most modern production unit of its type in the EU.

The ruins of Forhtenek Castle, a 14th-century castle destroyed in a peasants' revolt in 1635, are still visible on a hill above the settlement.

The municipality was established on 3 October 1994, prior to which it belonged to the larger Municipality of Velenje. The municipal holiday is celebrated on 30 October.

Šoštanj Airport (ICAO: LJSO) (Slovene: Letališče Šoštanj) is a small airport located in the settlement of Topolšica, Slovenia. It lies 2.2 kilometers (1.4 mi) north of Šoštanj and 6.2 kilometers (3.9 mi) northwest of Velenje. Given its short asphalt runway, the airport serves only small general aviation aircraft, up to 5,670 kilograms (12,500 lb) MTOM. Heavier aircraft can land at the discretion of the PIC if the performance is adequate. Examples of the heaviest aircraft operated at LJSO are Slovenian Air Force Cougar at 9000 kg MTOM, Solinair Turbolet 410 at 6600 kg MTOM, and Gorenje Cessna Citation I 5375 kg MTOM. The airport is maintained by Šaleški Aeroklub.

Škale (pronounced [ˈʃkaːlɛ], German: Skalis) is a settlement in the Municipality of Velenje in northern Slovenia. It lies just north of the town of Velenje. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. The entire municipality is now included in the Savinja Statistical Region. The former parish church, dedicated to Saint George, was demolished on September 27, 1951 (when the bell tower was dynamited). A new smaller filial church dedicated to Saint Joseph was built in 1976 in a new location. It belongs to Saint Martin's Parish in Velenje.

Ob Jezeru City Stadium (Slovene: Mestni stadion Ob jezeru; literally 'Lakeside City Stadium') is a multi-use stadium in Velenje, Slovenia. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of NK Rudar Velenje. The stadium is also used for athletics. Built in 1955, it was renovated in 1992 when a covered grandstand was built. In 1998, the stadium received floodlights. It has a capacity for 1,864 spectators.
