The Gen. Joseph B. Palmer House is a historic house in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, U.S.. It was built in 1867-1869 for Joseph B. Palmer, who served as a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War of 1861–1865. It was designed in the Italianate architectural style. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since September 20, 1973.

First Presbyterian Church is a historic church at 210 N. Spring Street in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The congregation was founded on April 10, 1812. Its original building was used a hospital by both sides in the Civil War and was destroyed. It was replaced by a new building completed in 1867. After the building was extensively damaged by a tornado in 1913, it was restored, with modifications to the design of the roof and structure. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places with a recorded completion date of 1914, corresponding to the post-tornado reconstruction. The new building was designed by Nashville architect D. Anderson Dickey and built by local contractors Maugans & Bell.

The Childress-Ray House is a historic house in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, United States. It was built in 1847. In 1874, it was purchased by John Childress, the brother of U.S. First Lady Sarah Childress Polk, brother-in-law of U.S. President James K. Polk, and the father-in-law of Tennessee Governor John C. Brown. Former First Lady Sarah Polk was a frequent visitor.The house was first designed in the Greek Revival architectural style, and later remodelled in the Italianate architectural style. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since December 27, 1979.

The Collier-Crichlow House is a historic house in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, United States. The house was built circa 1880 for Ingram Banks Collier III, who served as the mayor of Murfreesboro from 1872 to 1873. A relative, Colonel Newton C. Collier, also served as the mayor and as a director of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway. Two other members of the Collier-Crichlow family served as Murfreesboro's mayor: James H. Crichlow and N. Collier Crichlow.The house was designed by Confederate veteran and Nashville architect William Crawford Smith in the Second Empire style. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since July 16, 1973.

The Discovery Center is a children's museum, nature center and wetlands boardwalk near downtown Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Exhibits include themed exploration areas for town life, science, trains, cars, a fire engine and farmers market. There are live animals on display, an outdoor nature play area, and trails through the wetlands.

The Collier-Lane-Crichlow House was a historic house in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, United States. It was built circa 1850 for architect Sterling P. Jones, who designed in the Federal, Georgian and Greek Revival architectural styles. It was purchased by brothers Jessie A. Collier and Newton C. Collier in 1858. Four of Murfreesboro's mayors from the Collier-Crichlow family lived in the house: Ingram Collier, Newton B. Collier, James H. Crichlow Jr., and N. Collier Crichlow. It was restored by new homeowners in 1975. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 23, 1978. It was demolished in January 2023, and was delisted from the National Register in October 2023.

The First Battle of Murfreesboro was fought on July 13, 1862, in Rutherford County, Tennessee, as part of the American Civil War. Troops under Confederate cavalry commander Brig. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest surprised and quickly overran a Federal hospital, the camps of several small Union units, and the jail and courthouse in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. All of the Union units surrendered to Forrest, and the Confederates destroyed much of the Union's supplies and destroyed railroad track in the area. The primary consequence of the raid was the diversion of Union forces from a drive on Chattanooga.
