Soweto

Phiri is a township in the urban area of Soweto in South Africa. The township was founded in 1956, as part of the demographic reorganization started by the state that year. Phiri, along with several other areas, was created to house Sotho and Tswana-speakers. Phiri is the Sotho word for hyena. The town is also famous for the birthplace of South African international footballer Siphiwe Tshabalala.

Soweto Cricket Oval is a multi-purpose stadium in Soweto, Gauteng. The ground is mainly used for organizing matches of cricket, although it has also been used occasionally for football and local events. The stadium hosted its only first-class match on October 27, 1995, where South Africa and England played to a draw. It has also hosted two List A matches, and was used as one of the venues during the 1998 Under-19 World Cup. It has hosted local events such as the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival.

Avalon Cemetery is one of the largest graveyards in South Africa. It was opened in 1972, during the height of apartheid, as a graveyard exclusively for black people. The huge extension was officially opened on 9 February by Matshidiso Mfikoe, at the time a mayoral committee member for environment and corporate services. Before Avalon opened, Sowetans were buried in Nancefield (Klipspruit) Cemetery. That burial ground opened in 1912 but is now full except for second or third burials. Just beyond the entrance, to the left, there are Memorials dedicated to struggle activists Lilian Ngoyi and Helen Joseph. During Women’s Month in August 2010, the graves of Ngoyi, Joseph and Maxeke were declared National Heritage Sites. (The cemetery has memorials to other heroes as well.) To the North, near the Train Station, lies the Mendi Memorial. In the cemetery are the graves of Joe Slovo and Hector Pieterson.

Walter Sisulu Square, formally known as the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, is located in the heart of Kliptown in Soweto, South Africa.This location was the site where, on 26 June 1955, the Congress of the People, met to draw up the Freedom Charter, an alternative vision to the repressive policies of the apartheid state. The document emphasised a non-racial society, liberty and individual rights. The Freedom Charter remains the cornerstone of African National Congress policy to this day and is seen by many as the foundation of South Africa's 1996 constitution. The square has now been declared as a national heritage site. In June 2005, former President Thabo Mbeki lit a flame of freedom in Kliptown to mark the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Charter. It is named after Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu, a political activist during the apartheid era who was a member of African National Congress and served as Secretary-General and Deputy President of the organisation. He was released from prison in 1989. The square's features include an open-air museum that explains how the Freedom Charter was written as a collaborative effort by thousands of South Africans of all races. The conical brick tower at the centre of the square is a monument to the document itself and contains the full principles of the Charter engraved in bronze.

The Congress of the People was a gathering organised by the National Action Council, a multi-racial organisation which later became known as the Congress Alliance, and held in Kliptown on 26 June 1955 to lay out the vision of the South African people. The Freedom Charter was drawn up at the gathering, which was statement of core principles of the Alliance and a symbol of internal resistance against apartheid.

Kliptown is a suburb of the formerly black township of Soweto in Gauteng, South Africa, located about 17 km south-west of Johannesburg. Kliptown is the oldest residential district of Soweto, and was first laid out in 1891 on land which formed part of Klipspruit farm. The farm was named after the klipspruit (rocky stream) that runs nearby. From 1903 the area was home to informal settlements (squatter camps), and the area now contains a mixture of purpose-built housing and many shacks and other informal homes which form the Chris Hani and Dlamini settlements.

Zola is a section of the Soweto township lying south of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa. A number of well-known public figures, mostly musicians call Zola their home and were born and bred there. Zola is in the west of Soweto and is also known as Mzambiya (Zambia) or Mashona (west side). It is surrounded by the townships of Tladi, Naledi, Dobsonville, Emndeni, Jabulani and Moletsane. The musicians Mongezi and his wife, the late Margaret Singana, stayed in Zola before they got a house in Jabulani location which is also near Zola. Mdu Masilela, Mandoza, Mshoza, Mzambiya, Brown Dash, Mapaputsi, and Zola were all born in Zola. Soccer legends like Shoes of Orlando Pirates, Ace Mnini of Moroka Swallows, and Ree Skhosana of Moroka Swallows were all from Zola. Brenda Fassie also lived in Zola in the early 1980s. Zola is one of the most popular townships in Soweto and famous throughout South Africa for its notorious gangsters in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Gangsters like 11 Boys in the 1960s, Maumaus in the 1970s, and Chivas and Big18s in the late 1980s/early 1990s. It is a popular tourist destination. The Famous historical schools from Zola are Zola Higher Primary School, Dr. Vilakazi and Lavela Secondary School. An upcoming school is Kwadedangendlale Senior Secondary School with good pass rates.

Protea Glen is a township of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa, located north of Lenasia and west of Soweto. The suburb was developed in the 1990s for middle-class residents.The first shopping mall in the town, Protea Glen Mall, opened in October 2012. and also there are many schools like Basa Tutorial Institute, Faranani Primary School and Protea Glen Secondary School. 1,2

The Dobsonville Stadium, formerly Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium and also referred to as Dobsie Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Soweto, a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. The venue is managed by Stadium Management SA (SMSA). It is mostly used for football matches, but is also equipped with an athletics track. It is the home ground of Moroka Swallows, a football club which played in the Premier Soccer League until relegation at the end of the 2014–15 season. It was also utilised as a training field for teams participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, after being renovated in 2009 and brought up to FIFA standards. It also carries one of the best water drainage systems in the country. Dobsonville Stadium was originally built in 1975 with a capacity of 20,000 and can now accommodate 24,000 spectators, with improved facilities that include a media tribune, a press conference area, improved change rooms, gyms and a main stadium suite along with additional suite areas that can be utilised for corporate events and gatherings. Dobsonville was established as a playing field in 1957 when people from Roodepoort West were resettled in the area. There were a number of football grounds but the venue off Main Road was the most popular in that period. While it is always associated with legendary Soweto side, Moroka Swallows, who have the club's memorabilia and history inside the venue - Dobsie Stadium has hosted a number of international class events that include the 2009 African Youth (Under-20) Championship football tournament, the 2010 Gauteng Future Champs as well as a number of South African national football fixtures that include Banyana Banyana (the SA National Women's Football Team) and the SA National Men's Football Team's (Bafana Bafana) international fixture against Mauritius in their 2016 African Nations Championship qualifier in July 2015.

Eldorado Park is a suburb of Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located in Region G of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. It lies on the southern boundary of Soweto and prior to 1994, was a Coloured township during Apartheid.

Maponya Mall is a shopping centre in Soweto, Pimville, South Africa. The 65,000 square-metre development cost R650m to build and officially opened in September 2007. The mall was owned by South African entrepreneur and property developer Richard Maponya until his death in early January 2020 under The Maponya group in partnership with Investec and ZenProp property holdings.
