Beallsville Historic District is a 40-acre (16 ha) district in Beallsville, Pennsylvania. It is designated as a historic district by the Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation.The district covers a "typical pike town" of the National Road through this area, meeting criteria laid out in a Multiple Property Submission study. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. In 1996, there were 91 contributing buildings, 1 other contributing site (the Beallsville Cemetery), 1 other contributing object (a c.1835 National Road iron milestone marker), and 29 non-contributing buildings, in the district.In the western part of the district the buildings are largely vernacular with Greek Revival or Federal architectural influences showing in many, from the National Road era of 1818–1852. The eastern part of the district includes larger Italianate and Queen Anne style houses from later in the 19th century.: 5 Significant properties in the district include: 984 Maiden Street, the oldest building in the district, a log building from 1788 that was home of town founder Zephaniah Beall: 6 the 1821 Greenfield Stand, a.k.a. Greenfield Tavern, at 2848 Maiden Street: 6 the John Hough House, at 2852 Main Street, an "unassuming" house of a tollkeeper on the road: 6 Beallsville Methodist Church, from 1874: 7

Pittsburgh Coalfield

The Pittsburgh Coalfield (Pittsburgh Coal Region) is the largest of the Western Pennsylvania coalfields. It includes all or part of Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties in Pennsylvania. Coal has been mined in Pittsburgh since the 18th century. U.S. Steel and Bethlehem Steel owned Karen, Maple Creek, and Ellsworth mines. It is not possible to define sharp geographical boundaries for this district for none such exist or are reported differently. The largest company in this field was the Pittsburgh Coal Company, which later became CONSOL Energy. It is bordered on the west by the state of West Virginia, on the south by Panhandle Coalfield and Klondike Coalfield, on the East by Irwin Gas Coalfield, on the North by the Freeport Coalfield and at least one other coalfield. The Darr Mine Disaster occurred in this coalfield in 1907.

Hill's Tavern is a historic building in Scenery Hill, Pennsylvania. It was heavily damaged by a fire that started shortly before midnight on August 17, 2015. For a period in the early 1900s, the inn was known as Central Hotel. Now called the Century Inn, it has been claimed to have been the oldest tavern in continuous use on the National Road, until the fire brought an end to its 221 years of continuous operation.
