Sir John Carling Building

The Dominion Observatory was an astronomical observatory in Ottawa, Ontario that operated from 1902 to 1970. The Observatory was also an institution within the Canadian Federal Government. The observatory grew out of the Department of the Interior's need for the precise coordinates and timekeeping that at that time could only come from an observatory. For several years they had used a small observatory on the Ottawa River for this purpose. In 1902, it was decided that Canada needed a larger national observatory similar to the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Britain. Chief Dominion Architect David Ewart designed the Dominion Observatory in 1902.The new building was then erected near Dow's Lake on the Agriculture Department's Central Experimental Farm land. This Romanesque Revival building was completed in 1905. Its main instrument was a 15-inch refracting telescope, the largest refracting telescope ever installed in Canada, although it was not a particularly large telescope for this period. While the building and institution were primarily dedicated to astronomical timekeeping in support of surveying, a number of other activities took place here. The Dominion Observatory was Canada's leading institution in Geophysics for many decades, which included the operation of Canada's national seismometer network. The facility did important work, but with this bridgehead into the world of astronomy and the growth of the field of astrophysics, Canadian astronomers quickly demanded a facility designed for the new scientific age. In 1917, the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory was opened in Victoria, B.C. and it supplanted the Dominion Observatory as Canada's foremost astronomical observatory. For many years, the Dominion Observatory was best known to Canadians as the source of Canada's official time signal. The observatory continued in operation until 1970 at which time Canada's science institutions were reorganized. The national time-keeping and astronomical activities were transferred to the National Research Council of Canada, while the geophysics, surveying and mapping were transferred to the Department of Energy Mines and Resources. The Geophysics work was later merged into the Geological Survey of Canada, now part of Natural Resources Canada. Astronomical timekeeping observations at the Dominion Observatory had ceased many years prior to this, when crystal oscillator clocks and, later, atomic clocks were found to be superior to astronomical timekeeping. The building became home to NRCan offices. The telescope had been open for public viewing from 1905 until 1970. In 1974, the telescope was moved from the Dominion Observatory to the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory at the Canada Science and Technology Museum where it remained until 2016.As of 2008, the building is the home to the Office of Energy Efficiency, a part of the Energy Branch, Natural Resources Canada.

Dow's Lake (formerly known as Carling) is an O-Train station on the Trillium Line, one block west of the intersection of Carling Avenue and Preston Street in Ottawa, Ontario. It is near Dow's Lake the western terminal of the Rideau Canal skating rink (in winters only) and a key site during the Canadian Tulip Festival in May. The station is also near government offices at the area of Carling Avenue and Booth Street. South of Carling, the train enters a tunnel to pass under the Rideau Canal. The station was originally named for nearby Carling Avenue and Sir John Carling.

The Claridge Icon is a 45-storey condominium tower under construction in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located at the intersection of Carling Avenue and Preston Street in Little Italy. When the structure topped out in 2019, it became the tallest building in Ottawa since 1971 and the tallest in Ottawa-Gatineau since 1978. The building was designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects and built by Claridge Homes. It has suffered lengthy delays. When first announced in 2012, Claridge aimed for opening in late 2016. Once construction had begun in 2015, it was planned to be ready for occupancy in 2018.Early during construction in March 2016, a worker was struck and killed by a 12-metre (39 ft) chunk of ice that fell from the side of the construction pit. This resulted in a year-long delay and charges against the developer and main contractor (which were fined $325,000 each in May 2019). Construction work was halted again in March 2018 when a worker fell 3 metres (10 ft) from a platform and suffered a head injury.

The Ornamental Gardens are located at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Once used as a test facility for the development of winter hardy roses, weigela and peonies, it now acts as the steward to several large collections of ornamentals. Several notable collections include the Explorer rose collection, the Arthur Percy Saunders peonies and the Isabella Preston lilac series. To provide a proper environment for the many plant collections the Ornamental Gardens has been subdivided into several features. These include the Macoun Memorial Garden, the Lilac Walk, the Rock Garden, the Perennial Border and the Explorer Rose Garden. As a display garden for the AAS (All American Selection) the Ornamental Gardens also presents a yearly, dynamic display of the choicest annuals and perennials.

The K.W. Neatby Building is located at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The building contains the Eastern Cereal and Oilseed Research Centre (ECORC), a research centre belonging to the Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The building is a Recognized Heritage Building of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

The Dominion Arboretum (French: Arboretum du Dominion) is an arboretum part of the Central Experimental Farm of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Originally begun in 1889, the Arboretum covers about 26 hectares (64 acres) of rolling land between Prince of Wales Drive, Dow's Lake and the Rideau Canal. Carleton University is located at the opposite side of the Canal. At a latitude of 45°, it can experience extremely hot and humid summers and extremely cold winters. It displays a wide range of well-established trees and shrubs with the intention of evaluating their hardiness, including 1,700 different species and varieties. The arboretum is open from dawn to dusk and the admission is free. Although the climate of the Ottawa area is Zone 5a, the topography of the Arboretum produces a microclimate and is warmer by one zone. This has allowed for a collection of magnolias, azaleas, and several other fringe trees including Metasequoia and Liriodendron. One of the favourite attractions for tourists is the Ornamental Gardens. In this area are located the annual plant display, perennial borders, lilac walks, roses and hedges. The hedge collection was planted between 1966 and 1968 and contains a variety of species suitable for use as a hedge.

Commissioners Park is a park in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It lies within the westernmost section of The Glebe, bounded by Dow's Lake, Preston Street, Carling Avenue and Dow's Lake Road. Throughout the warmer months it is a popular place for family walks. The National Capital Commission maintains the park and manages to keep flowers blooming there throughout the growing season. During the annual Canadian Tulip Festival, it is a major tulip viewing area with the highest concentration of tulips in the region numbering as many as 300,000.

Dow's Lake in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada is a small man-made lake on the Rideau Canal, situated two kilometres north of Hog's Back Falls in the middle of Ottawa. It is at the south end of Preston Street, just south of Carling Avenue, and just to the west of Bronson Avenue. At the south end of the lake is Carleton University, and to the west is the Dominion Arboretum, at the edge of the Central Experimental Farm.

Little Italy is a neighbourhood of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and the cultural centre of Ottawa's Italian community. Situated in Centretown West, it is bounded by Albert Street to the north, Carling Avenue to the south, the O-Train Trillium Line to the west, and approximately Bronson Avenue to the east, while the neighbourhood's main commercial area is along Preston Street. Little Italy is adjacent to Chinatown, whose business district centres on Somerset Street.

The Ottawa Civic Hospital is one of three main campuses of The Ottawa Hospital – along with the General and Riverside campuses. With 549 beds (including the Heart Institute), the Civic Campus has the region's only adult-care trauma centre, serving Eastern Ontario, the Outaouais region of Quebec and eastern Nunavut. The Civic Campus also houses the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, which provides cardiac care for patients at The Ottawa Hospital. The Civic Campus opened in 1924 and is located at 1053 Carling Avenue in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Corso Italia is an infill station currently under construction on the Trillium Line in Ottawa, Ontario. It will service Ottawa's Little Italy neighbourhood. It is being constructed as part of the Stage 2 O-Train expansion and is scheduled for completion in 2023. The station will consist of two side platforms and is located north of Gladstone Avenue, near Preston Street. The station was known as Gladstone during development.

The Gladstone is a live theatre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The Gladstone is "Ottawa's Home of Independent Theatre," housing productions by local indie theatre companies. It is located on Gladstone Avenue just west of Preston Street. It is the former home of the Great Canadian Theatre Company.
