Charleroi Historic District

United States Post Office—Charleroi is a historic building in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. It is located at 638 Fallowfield Avenue.It is designated as a historic public landmark by the Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation. It now houses the John K. Tener Library [1].

Charleroi ( SHAR-lə-roy) is a borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States, along the Monongahela River, 21 miles south of Pittsburgh. Charleroi was settled in 1890 and incorporated in 1891. The 2020 census recorded a population of 4,210. Reduced industrial activities in the region led to a decreasing population. The steel-making industry was supported by cheap transportation on the Monongahela River from upstream of Charleroi into northern West Virginia and north as well as downstream past McKeesport to the mouth of the Monongahela in Pittsburgh. Colloquially, the stretch from Charleroi north to McKeesport (historically because of press coverage of High School sports leagues), is known as the "Mon Valley," and has been extended by some to mean from the river mouth to northern West Virginia. Once dubbed "Magic City," Charleroi has in recent years seen a gradual revitalization of its business district.

First National Bank of Charleroi is a historic building in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. The building was completed in 1922, served a series of banks, and is now home to Ductmate Industries. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 7, 2007.

Charleroi Locks & Dam, officially known as Locks & Dam 4 by the US Army Corps of Engineers, is one of nine navigational structures on the Monongahela River between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Fairmont, West Virginia. Maintained and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the gated dam forms an upstream pool that is for 19.7 miles to the Maxwell Lock & Dam. The dam is located at mile 41.5 on the river. Unlike many of the river's single lock structure, the Charleroi facility features two working locks; this addition took place during a 1967 rehabilitation project.

The Charleroi–Monessen Bridge, officially the John K. Tener Memorial Bridge, is a two lane structure spanning the Monongahela River. The bridge connects North Charleroi in Washington County, Pennsylvania and Monessen in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The structure connects Route 88 on the west bank of the river and Route 906 on the east side. The bridge, which opened in 2013, replaced a 1906 structure. The original bridge closed in 2009 due to structural deficiency.

North Charleroi is a borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,302 at the 2020 census. The settlement is also known as "Lock 4". Previously Lock and Dam #4 was located on this side of the Monongahela River, and the place had this name. Lock and Dam #4 was later relocated further upstream on the other side of the "Charleroi Monessen Bridge". The name was changed but most residents still refer to the town as "Lock 4".

Monessen is a city in southwestern Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States, located along the Monongahela River. The population was 6,876 at the 2020 census. Steel-making was a prominent industry in Monessen, and it became a third-class city in 1921. With restructuring of the steel industry in the later 20th century and loss of jobs, it is considered a Rust Belt borough in the "Mon Valley" of southwestern Pennsylvania. Monessen is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area, as well as the Laurel Highlands. It sits across the Monongahela from the city of North Charleroi.

The Speers Railroad Bridge, also called the Belle Vernon Railroad Bridge, carries the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway across the Monongahela River from Speers east to North Belle Vernon in the state of Pennsylvania. The structure was originally designed by the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railroad using a K-truss style that is rarely used outside of the Great Plains. The high-level span passes feature several smaller approach segments on the river's eastern bank due to the width of the valley.

The Belle Vernon Bridge, also called the Speers Bridge or Speers/Belle Vernon Bridge, carries Interstate 70 across the Monongahela River from Speers east to Rostraver Township in the state of Pennsylvania. Around 1951 it replaced an earlier low-level bridge, which connected Pennsylvania Route 88 via State Street with Pennsylvania Route 906 at the I-70 east ramps, just to the south of the current bridge. The old bridge carried Legislative Route 118 and Pennsylvania Route 71 until those were moved to the new bridge when it opened.
