The Avalon School

The Hammond Wood Historic District is a national historic district located at Silver Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland. It consists of 58 Contemporary single-family houses, built between 1949 and 1951, nestled in a tract of heavily wooded, rolling land. It is an intact, architecturally cohesive example of Charles Goodman's merchant builder subdivisions in Montgomery County.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Wheaton is a census-designated place in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, situated north of Washington, D.C., and northwest of downtown Silver Spring. Wheaton takes its name from Frank Wheaton (1833–1903), a career officer in the United States Army and volunteer from Rhode Island in the Union Army who rose to the rank of major-general while serving before, during and after the Civil War. Wheaton was found to have a population of 52,150 in the 2020 census. The United States Postal Service has assigned ZIP code 20902 to Wheaton, but the Wheaton Post Office is a part of the larger Silver Spring area. Downtown Wheaton is located around the triangle formed by Veirs Mill Road, University Boulevard, and Georgia Avenue.

Wheaton High School is a U.S. four-year public high school in Montgomery County, Maryland. It is located in the unincorporated Wheaton-Glenmont section of Montgomery County, near Silver Spring, about 5 miles north of Washington, D.C. The high school is a part of the Montgomery County Public School system and a member of its Downcounty Consortium. The school is named for the Wheaton area, which is in turn named for Frank Wheaton (1833–1903), a career officer in the Union Army who rose to the rank of major-general while serving before, during, and after the Civil War. The school used to be physically connected to the Thomas Edison High School of Technology, named in honor of the famous American inventor.

The Rock Creek Woods Historic District is a national historic district located north of Kensington, Montgomery County, Maryland (although the postal address is Silver Spring). This suburban development, consisting of 74 Contemporary houses, is nestled in a wooded valley between two creeks near Connecticut Avenue (MD 185). These houses were designed by Charles Goodman and built between 1958 and 1961 by Herschel and Marvin Blumberg, developers of New Town Center in nearby Hyattsville, Maryland. The original layout, including roads, lot configurations, and sidewalks, remains unaltered. During the 1960s, the neighborhood was home to a significant Jewish population and many people in the neighborhood were active in liberal causes, particularly the peace movement. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Thomas Edison High School of Technology (often referred to as Thomas Edison or Edison) is a public vocational/technical high school located in Wheaton, an unincorporated section of Montgomery County, Maryland. It is located next to Wheaton High School. Edison is a member of the Downcounty Consortium. All programs consist of an academic base, industry competency requirements, employability skill development and career/college planning components, as well as opportunities for leadership development. Thomas Edison registers all students who are enrolled in the career and technical student organization, SkillsUSA. Typically, students spend half of their day at Thomas Edison, and the other half at their home school. Thomas Edison offers two sessions: the morning session from 8:05 AM to 10:35 AM, and the afternoon session from 11:20 AM to 1:50 PM. Thomas Edison is also the headquarters for the Montgomery County Students Trades Foundations Office.

The Wheaton Youth Center, also known as the Wheaton Community Recreation Center, was a building located on Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, Maryland. The space was operated by the Montgomery County Department of Recreation. The Wheaton Youth Center opened in December 1963 and for the following decade was one of the premiere locations for the emerging suburban Maryland concert scene. Concerts at the Wheaton Youth Center were held in the gymnasium, which was located across from the Wheaton Library.

The Anchor Inn was a landmark restaurant opened in 1954 in the heart of Wheaton, Maryland located at the corner of University Boulevard West and Georgia Avenue. The restaurant was closed in 2004 and in May 2006 the restaurant was torn down to make way for a residential and retail mixed-use development.

Wheaton–Glenmont was a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Maryland, at the 2000 United States Census, at which time it had a population of 57,694. For the 2010 U.S. Census the area was split into the two census-designated places of Wheaton and Glenmont.

The murders of Katherine and Sheila Lyon are the abduction, sexual abuse and murder of two sisters — aged 10 and 12 respectively — who disappeared from a shopping center in Wheaton, Maryland, on March 25, 1975.Described as a crime which shattered the innocence of the suburbs of Maryland, the disappearance of Katherine and Sheila Lyon initiated one of the largest police investigations in the history of the Washington metropolitan area, although their fate would remain unknown for thirty-eight years, by which time their disappearance had long become a cold case.A re-investigation of the sisters' disappearance in 2013 led detectives to charge a convicted child sex offender named Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr. with the first-degree murder of the Lyon sisters. Welch was indicted for their murders in July 2015; he pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in September 2017 via a plea bargain in which he admitted to participating in the girls' abduction, but not their sexual assault and murder. He was sentenced to two concurrent terms of 48 years' imprisonment.The bodies of Katherine and Sheila Lyon have never been found, although authorities believe their bodies were burned and buried upon a remote mountain in Bedford County, Virginia. Furthermore, prosecutors have named other members of Welch's family — including his uncle — as persons of interest in the girls' abduction, abuse and murder, although no other individuals have been charged due to insufficient evidence.
