Villafranca Tirrena is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, located about 180 kilometres (110 mi) east of Palermo and about 12 kilometres (7 mi) northwest of Messina. Villafranca Tirrena borders the following municipalities: Messina, Saponara.

The Rometta Marea derailment occurred on Saturday 20 July 2002 in Rometta Marea, part of the Rometta comune in Sicily, Italy. The Espresso (express train) 1932 Freccia della Laguna, a Ferrovie dello Stato train coming from Palermo to Messina, where it would join another convoy coming from Siracusa, derailed while entering the town of Rometta Marea and hit an abandoned building, 400 metres from a pass-through railway station. Of the 190 passengers on board, 8 were killed and 47 were injured.

The University of Messina (Italian: Università degli Studi di Messina; Latin: Studiorum Universitas Messanae), known colloquially as UniME, is a state university located in Messina, Sicily, Italy. Founded in 1548 by Pope Paul III, it was the world's first Jesuit college, and today it is counted among the oldest universities in Italy. Rometta (Sicilian: Ramietta) is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, located about 180 kilometres (110 mi) east of Palermo and about 12 kilometres (7 mi) west of Messina. It was the last bastion of Sicily controlled by the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium), and falling only in 965 to the Kalbids' Muslim army in the Siege of Rometta. Rometta borders the following municipalities: Messina, Monforte San Giorgio, Roccavaldina, Saponara, Venetico, Spadafora.

The Monte Dinnammare (1130 m) is the mountain that dominates the city of Messina on the eastern edge of Sicily, belonging to the Peloritani range. From its top it is possible to enjoy the panorama of the two seas, Ionian and Tyrrhenian, the Aeolian Islands, the Strait of Messina and Mount Etna. The Madonna of Dinnammare Sanctuary is located on its top and every third day of August, in the evening, a traditional procession starts from the village of Larderia in Messina to arrive at sunrise on the following day at the Sanctuary to celebrate the Madonna of Dinnammare with a mass.A few metres below the top of the mount an ancient path named Dorsale dei Peloritani starts, going through all the ridge line of the Peloritani mountains. The mount is a natural theatre for birdwatching of the birds that cross the Strait of Messina every year. Twenty kilometres is the distance between the port of Messina and its top.

The Dorsale dei Peloritani is a 70 km (43 mi) panoramic path that runs through the Peloritani mountains in Sicily at a height of around 1,000 m (3,300 ft). Its origins are lost in time. It starts from Monte Dinnammare, overlooking the Strait of Messina where there is the homonymous sanctuary, and ends at Rocca di Novara.
