Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital and Training School, originally Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital and School for Nurses, opened in 1895 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 1512 Lombard Street with had 15 beds. It was the city's first hospital for African Americans and the second hospital in the United States for African Americans. In 1897, it graduated its first two nurses. It expanded and in 1948 merged with Mercy Hospital to form Mercy-Douglass Hospital in hopes of improving both of their both of their financials conditions. Mercy-Douglas closed in 1973. Nathan F. Mossell served as chief of staff. His brother Aaron Albert Mossell was the hospital's lawyer. William Albert Sinclair was its financial secretary beginning in 1904. He wrote Aftermath of Slavery.

The Philadelphia Tribune is the oldest continuously published African-American newspaper in the United States.The paper began in 1884 when Christopher J. Perry published its first copy. Throughout its history, The Philadelphia Tribune has been committed to the social, political, and economic advancement of African Americans in the Greater Philadelphia region. During a time when African Americans struggled for equality, the Tribune acted as the "Voice of the black community" for Philadelphia. Historian V. P. Franklin asserted that the Tribune "was (and is) an important Afro-American cultural institution that embodied the predominant cultural values of upper-, middle-, and lower-class Black Philadelphians."In the early 21st century, the paper is headquartered at 520 South 16th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It publishes on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. The Philadelphia Tribune also publishes the Tribune Magazine, Entertainment Now, Sojourner, The Learning Key, and The Sunday Tribune. The Tribune serves the Philadelphia–Camden Metro Area, as well as Chester. The Tribune has received the John B. Russwurm award as "Best Newspaper" in the country seven times since 1995.

The Royal Theater was a center of African American culture in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built in 1919, by the 1930s the theater had earned the reputation as "America's Finest Colored Photoplayhouse". The theater closed in 1970, after attendance dwindled and the threat of the Crosstown Expressway had decimated the neighborhood. (The proposed highway was never built.) In 2000, Kenny Gamble’s Universal Companies purchased the Royal, 1522 and 1536 South, buildings on either side of the theater, as well as 1523, 1537 and 1539 Kater St. (the narrow street just south of South) and 1521–1523 South St. (across the street), from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia for $250,000.

The Thomas Durham School is a historic school building in Philadelphia which was built in 1909. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1988.The building was built as part of a major construction program after the School District of Philadelphia was reorganized and consolidated in 1905. Between 1906 and World War I, the district built 44 elementary schools, one junior high school, and five senior high schools. The architect of this program, Henry deCourcy Richards, used a number of plans in different architectural styles, such as Regency architecture, Colonial Revival, Georgian Revival, Classical Revival, Jacobethan, Mediterranean Revival, and Academic Gothic. In some cases, he built multiple schools from each pattern, but varying the ornamentation between individual buildings.The Thomas Durham School is one of his Regency designs. It was one of his plainest designs for the district, and also one of the cheapest to build. This may have resulted from its location in a predominantly African-American neighborhood.The Thomas Durham School building is now occupied by Independence Charter School.

The Touraine is a historic building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 13-story building was originally constructed in 1917 as a grand hotel. In 1983, it was converted into luxury apartments. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It was added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places on January 7, 1982.

Dunbar Theatre was a 1600-seat theatre and jazz club on the corner of Lombard Street and Broad Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It opened in 1919 and was later called the Gibson Theatre and Lincoln Theatre.

The Suzanne Roberts Theatre is a theatre on Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts. The theater opened in October 2007 and is home to the Philadelphia Theatre Company. The theater was designed by KieranTimberlake, using the principles of Universal design. The theater's signage facade was designed by House Industries in Wilmington, Delaware and produced by Zahner in Kansas City, Missouri.It is named after Suzanne Roberts (born Suzanne Fleisher in 1921, died 2020), a former actress, playwright, and director who was the host of the TV program, Seeking Solutions with Suzanne, which formerly aired on The Comcast Network and HLN. Her husband, Ralph J. Roberts founded Comcast and her son, Brian L. Roberts is Comcast's current CEO. From 1982 until the opening of its 2007/2008 season in the new venue, the Philadelphia Theatre Company had been a resident performer at the Plays and Players Theatre.

The Drake Hotel, a historic 375-foot-tall, 33-story luxury hotel located at 1512–1514 Spruce Street at the corner of S. Hicks Street between S. 15th and S. 16th Streets in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was built in 1928–29 by the Murphy, Quigley Company and was designed by the architectural firm of Ritter and Shay in the Art Deco style with Spanish Baroque terra cotta ornamentation on themes surrounding Sir Francis Drake, including "dolphins, shells, sailing vessels and globes." The building is topped by a terra cotta dome.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1978. It was added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places on October 6, 1977. In 1998, the building was extensively renovated and converted to condominiums as "The Drake".

The Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art (PMSIA), also referred to as the School of Applied Art, was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on February 26, 1876, as both a museum and teaching institution. This was in response to the Centennial International Exhibition held in Philadelphia that year. Classes began in Fall 1877, in a building at 312 North Broad Street, and soon moved into the old Franklin Institute (now the Philadelphia History Museum), at 15 South 7th Street.In 1893 PMSIA acquired a complex of buildings at Broad & Pine, vacated by the Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf and Dumb when they moved to Germantown. In 1964, following a series of name changes, the two institutions split: the museum became the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the school became the Philadelphia College of Art. After further name changes the school has become the University of the Arts. University of the Arts has retained the property at 320 S. Broad Street.

University of the Arts (UArts) is a private art university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its campus makes up part of the Avenue of the Arts in Center City, Philadelphia. Dating back to the 1870s, it is one of the oldest schools of art or music in the United States. The university is composed of two colleges and two Divisions: the College of Art, Media & Design; the College of Performing Arts; the Division of Liberal Arts; and the Division of Continuing Studies. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. In addition, the School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Lombard–South is a subway station on SEPTA's Broad Street Line, located at 500 South Broad Street, at the intersection of Broad Street and Lombard Street in the Washington Square West area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . It serves only Broad Street Line local service trains and consists of one platform. Lombard–South station is located within short walking distance of the South Street Headhouse District (approximately 4-5 blocks east). Other area sights include the University of the Arts, Peirce College, and, approximately four blocks west, the Graduate Hospital campus and neighborhood.
