Thornton is a southern suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. Thornton is situated only 10 kilometres (6 mi) east of the city centre, adjacent to Pinelands. Like Pinelands, Thornton is a mainly residential suburb with an abundance of trees. It is bordered by the Elsieskraal River, Pinelands, Viking Way, and the M7 Jakes Gerwel Drive. Many of the streets in Thornton are named after Viking themes, such as Thor Circle, Odin Drive and Viking Way. Others are named after trees, such as Poplar Avenue and Sipres Avenue.

Goodwood is a suburb of Cape Town in the Western Cape, South Africa and is situated in the Tygerberg region of the City of Cape Town. It is 10 kilometres from Cape Town and accessible from the N1, N7 and N2 highways.The town was established in 1905 and named after Goodwood Racecourse in England as the founders intended to make it a racing centre. A course was actually constructed, but after only one meeting it was abandoned.The first railway station was built in 1905, and today there are five within the municipal area. Three of them lie on the Cape Town-Johannesburg main line: Goodwood, Vasco and Elsies River. It also has Monte Vista and Acasia Park stations which are on the secondary line between Cape Town and Bellville.

Mutual railway station is a Metrorail commuter rail station located between the suburbs of Maitland and Pinelands in Cape Town, South Africa. It is situated next to the South African headquarters of the Old Mutual, from which it takes its name. Mutual is a particularly busy station because it is the junction at which the Central Line towards Mitchell's Plain and Khayelitsha diverges from the Northern Line main line to Bellville. The station is divided into two parts, connected by a platform-to-platform bridge. To the north there is a side platform and an island platform, serving three tracks of the Northern Line; to the south, an island platform containing a single bay, serving three tracks of the Central Line. There is a station building on either side of the tracks.

Goodwood Centre of Excellence or Goodwood Correctional Centre is a medium security prison in Edgemead, Cape Town and run by the South African Department of Correctional Services. Despite its location in Edgemead the prison is named after the nearby neighbourhood of Goodwood.

Epping is an industrial area of Cape Town that is situated to the south of Thornton, east of Pinelands and north of Langa. Epping Industria was first developed in the late 1940s. Industrial development was initially slow and in the early 1950s the circular Gunners Circle was used as a race track for cars. When industrial development picked up in the late 1950s the racing was stopped. The completion of the Athlone Power Station close by assisted in the proliferation of industrial businesses into the area in the mid 1960s. Epping Industria is the largest and most centrally situated industrial area in greater Cape Town. Its proximity to the major roadways and the availability of most forms of public transport make it an extremely sought after location for business. The area hosts a number of companies involved in the textile, automotive, logistics, construction and food processing industries. Nampak, Africa's largest packaging company, is one of the largest companies to have operations in Epping. Other large companies in Epping Industria are Distell Ltd, AVI Ltd and Afrox. The Cape Town Market is one of the oldest and largest fresh produce markets in South Africa. It is over 50 years old and services over 5500 producers delivering fresh produce to market agents, who in turn sell the fresh produce to over 8000 registered buyers. Epping Industria is managed by the Epping Community Improvement District (ECID) whereby all owners contribute to the operating costs of the ECID. The ECID assists the City of Cape Town to look after aspects such as cleaning, security, emergency management and traffic management.

Pinelands is an affluent garden city suburb located on the edge of the southern suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa, neighbouring the suburb of Thornton, and is known for its large thatched houses and green spaces. The suburb is primarily residential and is often praised for its peacefulness and abundance of trees. Pinelands is one of the few areas in Cape Town in which sale of alcohol to the public is prohibited, but some clubs have private liquor licenses. It is a popular place for senior citizens to retire to. While there are several retirement homes in the suburb, younger people are increasingly moving in. The main road is called Forest Drive and the suburb contains two small shopping centres, namely Howard Centre (named after Ebenezer Howard who led the garden city movement) and Central Square. Pinelands is served by two Metrorail railway stations: Pinelands station on the western edge of the suburb and Mutual station on the northern edge. The suburb is bisected from the north east to the south west by the Elsieskraal River, which has flowed through a large concrete drainage canal since the 1970s. Elsieskraal River also flows through the neighbouring suburb of Thornton, which is a similar residential suburb with an abundance of trees.
