Agana Heights, Guam

The Guam Institute, located off in Guam Highway 1 in Hagåtña (formerly Agana or Agaña), Guam, was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1977; the listing included one contributing building. It was built in 1911. It has also been known as the Jose P. Lujan House. The house is significant as one of few houses in Agana surviving from before World War II. It was built by carpenter and cabinet-maker Jose Pangelinan Lujan, who rented the house and later lived in it, until moving out of the house in 1928. Lujan owned the house until 1969. The house was the location of the Guam Institute, "the only successful private school of the pre-war period" in Guam, from 1928 until the institute was closed in December, 1941, with the Japanese invasion.: 3  The house was damaged by Typhoon Pamela in 1976; photos in 1977 showed it in poor condition. However, supported by the NRHP listing, the owner obtained Federal matching grant funds to support rehabilitation of the building during 1980–1982. Work done used "design, materials (ifil wood), and workmanship to maintain the original character of the building." It is one of five pre-World War II houses that make up the NRHP-listed Agana Historic District.

Fort Santa Agueda, on Guam Highway 7 in Hagåtña (formerly Agana), Guam, dates from about 1800, during the 1784-1802 administration of Spanish governor Manuel Moro. It was an uncovered fort with a manposteria (coral stone and lime mortar) parapet, rising about 10 feet (3.0 m) above a sloping hillside. It is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, as the only remaining fortification of the Spanish Era in Hagåtña. The fort was mentioned in 1802 by an officer of an American whaling ship, who recorded that the fort had seven guns and ten men, and that it fired a salute when the governor entered a new church in Agana. Russian Otto von Kotzebue, in 1817, noted that it had only a few guns. It was in ruins by 1887. It was used by Americans as a signal station until 1933, and was converted to a gun emplacement by the Japanese occupiers during World War II. It became a park in 1960 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Guam High School (GHS or GMHS) is a U.S. military operated secondary school located at 401 Stitt Street in Agana Heights in the United States territory of Guam. The school, a part of the Department of Defense Education Activity, serves over 500 students grades 9 through 12. The school serves children of military personnel stationed in Guam. Staff includes forty-six teachers and two administrators. The principal is Katrina Watts. In September 1997 the DoDEA opened its own schools for children of military personnel. It is within the Naval Hospital census-designated place, defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Agana Spanish Bridge (Spanish: Puente Español de Agaña) is a stone arch bridge built in 1800 in Hagåtña, Guam (formerly known as Agana), during the administration of Spanish governor Manuel Muro. It is the only surviving Spanish bridge in Hagåtña, which is the capital of the United States territory of Guam. Also known as Sagon I Tolai Acho, it is located at the southwest corner of Aspenall St. and Rte. 1 and was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Originally it crossed the Hagåtña River, which had been diverted, and it connected the San Ignacio district to the Bilibic district. The bridge was damaged in bombardment during the U.S. recapture of Guam from Japan in 1944. The Hagåtña River was rechanneled elsewhere, later; the site became a park and the bridge was restored in 1966. The restoration included replacing portions of the bridge by a "stylized concrete wall". A rectangular cement pond area replaced the former riverbed under the bridge.

The Mesa House, or Dr. Mesa House, is a historic house on Maxwell St. in Hagåtña, Guam. Built in 1930, it is relatively rare as a pre-World War II house with ifil wood construction. The building is two stories on a 12.6 by 8.4 metres (41 ft × 28 ft) plan. The first floor is concrete, while the second floor is ifil wood in both framing and flooring. The roof is framed in non-ifil wood and covered in corrugated metal. Its colonial-era architecture is exemplified by exterior stairs and porch elements. The house is notable for surviving not just World War II, but also termite infestations and typhoons that have regularly devastated the island. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The Plaza de España (Spain Square) located in central Hagåtña, the capital of the United States territory of Guam, was the location of the Governors Palace during the island's long period of Spanish occupation. Most of the palace was destroyed during the shelling of Hagåtña during the reconquest of Guam in World War II. There are three structures still standing including the three-arch gate to Almacen (Arsenal), the azotea or back porch, and the Chocolate House. The plaza was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Legislature of Guam (Chamorro: Lehislaturan Guåhan) is the law-making body for the United States territory of Guam. The unicameral legislative branch consists of fifteen senators, each serving for a two-year term. All members of the legislature are elected at-large with the island under one whole district. After the enactment of the Guam Organic Act in 1950, the First Guam Legislature was elected composing of 21 elected members. Today, the current fifteen-member 37th Guam Legislature (Chamorro: I Mina' Trentai Siette Na Lehislaturan Guåhan) was elected in November 2022. The next election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.

Academy of Our Lady of Guam (AOLG) is an all-girls private Catholic high school located at 233 Archbishop Felixberto C. Flores Street in Hagåtña, Guam, United States. AOLG, Guam's sole all-girls high school, has an average yearly enrollment of 400 students. In 2004 it was awarded the highest medal of recognition from the Archdiocese of Agaña. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The school has several clubs and organizations: Student Council, National Honor Society, Model United Nations, Mock Trial, and National Forensics League.

The Metropolitan Archdiocese of Agaña (Latin: Archidiœcesis Metropolitae Aganiensis , Spanish: Arquidiócesis Metropolitana de Agaña) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese. It comprises the United States dependency of Guam. The prelate is an archbishop whose cathedral is the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica. The archdiocese is a member of the Episcopal Conference of the Pacific (CEPAC) and of the Federation of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Oceania, and an observer to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica (Spanish: Catedral Basílica del Dulce Nombre de María) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Guam. It is the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Agaña. It is located on the site where the island's first Catholic church was constructed in 1669, under the guidance of Father Diego San Vitores. The present building looms above the palm trees and is a familiar landmark in downtown Hagåtña. The basilica enshrines the image of Santa Marian Kamalen, Patroness of Guam.

The Guam Museum, formally the Senator Antonio M. Palomo Guam Museum & Chamorro Educational Facility, is a museum focusing on the history of Guam, a U.S. territory in Micronesia. A permanent building to house the museum's collection opened in Hagåtña on November 4, 2016. The Guam Museum had been housed in temporary locations since World War II.

The Guam Congress Building, also known as the Guam Legislature Building, is the seat of the Legislature of Guam and is located in Chalan Santo Papa in Hagåtña, Guam. It was built in 1949 by Pacific Island Buildings and of Brown & Root Pacific Bridge & Maxon. It has served as a capitol and as a courthouse building. It is a Modern Movement-style building that was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2007. It is significant for its role in the history of the Chamorro people and their effort to end the dominant military rule of the United States Navy in 1950. The legislature moved to a new location in 1989 and two wings of the building were taken down; the building was then converted to house government offices. In December 2016, a restoration and energy efficiency upgrade of the Congress Building was completed, allowing the Legislature of Guam to reconvene in the building from January 2017 onwards, returning Senators to the historic structure full-time after a 27-year absence.
