Madison (village), New York

Madison is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 3,008 at the 2010 census. The Town of Madison contains a village also named Madison. The town is near the eastern border of the county.

Lake Moraine (also known as Madison Reservoir) is a mesotrophic lake located 2.5 miles (4.0 km) northeast of Hamilton, New York. The lake is 261 acres (1.06 km2), consisting of two basins which are separated by a causeway and interconnected by a culvert. The northern basin is 79 acres (0.32 km2) and is relatively shallow with a maximum depth of 12 feet (3.7 m) and average depth of 3.7 feet (1.1 m). The larger southern basin is 172 acres (0.70 km2) and has a maximum depth of 45 feet (14 m) and an average depth of 17.7 feet (5.4 m). Payne Brook is the lake's outflow that flows into the Chenango River.

The Chenango Canal was a towpath canal in central New York in the United States which linked the Susquehanna River to the Erie Canal. Built and operated in the mid-19th century, it was 97 miles long and for much of its course followed the Chenango River, along New York State Route 12 from Binghamton on the south end to Utica on the north. It operated from 1834 to 1878 and provided a significant link in the water transportation system of the northeastern U.S. until supplanted by the region's developing railroad network.

Oriskany Falls is a village in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 732 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from a waterfall on a nearby stream. The Village of Oriskany Falls is in the southeast section of the Town of Augusta and partly overlaps the Town of Marshall. The community is at the intersection of Routes 12B and 26, which share a brief concurrency within the village and south to Bouckville.

First Congregational Free Church is a historic church at 177 N. Main Street in Oriskany Falls, Oneida County, New York. It is a limestone structure started in 1833 and completed in 1845. It features a low gable roof surmounted by a tower consisting of a belfry and slender spire.The Congregation was founded in 1825 to meet the growing need for a dedicated place of worship in the town of Oriskany Falls. The construction of the church was overseen by a committee of prominent community members, including John Thompson and William Adams. Architect James Monroe was commissioned to design the church, which was constructed in the Greek Revival architectural style. During the Civil War era, the Limestone Church became a hub of support for the war efforts. The congregation actively participated in fundraising initiatives and organized aid for soldiers and their families. The church provided solace and comfort to the community during this challenging period. Over the years, the Limestone Church has undergone modifications and preservation efforts to ensure its longevity. In the late 19th century, a rear addition was constructed to accommodate Sunday school classrooms and community gatherings. The church's interior was also enhanced with decorative elements, including stained glass windows and intricate woodwork. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Hamilton Municipal Airport (ICAO: KVGC, FAA LID: VGC, formerly H30), opened in 1963, is a village-owned, public-use airport located one nautical mile (1.85 km) northeast of the central business district of Hamilton, a village in the Town of Hamilton, Madison County, New York, United States.Although many U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, this facility is assigned VGC by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA.

Captain Samuel H. Beckwith (December 18, 1837 – December 6, 1916) was a telegraph and cipher officer to Ulysses S. Grant. He was nicknamed "Grant's Shadow" by other staff officers. Beckwith was the first to transmit news of John Wilkes Booth's whereabouts after Lincoln's assassination, leading to Booth’s capture. Beckwith was also present as Grant's telegraph officer on Abraham Lincoln's visits.In Washington, Lincoln used to daily visit the telegraph office, and cipher operator David Homer Bates was later to recall these visits, along with the testimony of Thomas T. Eckert, Charles A. Tinker, Albert B. Chandler, and Albert E. H. Johnson in Lincoln in the Telegraph Office (1907).
