Hamilton, New York

The Village of Hamilton is a village located within the town of Hamilton in Madison County, New York, United States. Notably, it is the location of Colgate University and has a population of 4,239, according to the 2010 census.

Captain Samuel H. Beckwith (December 18, 1837 – December 6, 1916) was a telegraph and cipher officer to Ulysses S. Grant. He was nicknamed "Grant's Shadow" by other staff officers. Beckwith was the first to transmit news of John Wilkes Booth's whereabouts after Lincoln's assassination, leading to Booth’s capture. Beckwith was also present as Grant's telegraph officer on Abraham Lincoln's visits.In Washington, Lincoln used to daily visit the telegraph office, and cipher operator David Homer Bates was later to recall these visits, along with the testimony of Thomas T. Eckert, Charles A. Tinker, Albert B. Chandler, and Albert E. H. Johnson in Lincoln in the Telegraph Office (1907).

US Post Office-Hamilton is a historic post office building located at Hamilton in Madison County, New York, United States. It was designed and built in 1936, and is one of a number of post offices in New York State designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department, Louis A. Simon. It is a one-story, five bay steel frame building with a raised poured concrete foundation and brick watercourse in the Colonial Revival style. The interior features a 1938 relief sculpture by Humbert Albrizio titled "The Messengers."It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Adon Smith House is a historic home located at Hamilton in Madison County, New York. It was built about 1850 and is a 2+1⁄2-story brick dwelling with Italianate elements. It features a U-shaped porch with elaborate wrought iron columns and railings and has a glazed belvedere. It is now used as the village office building.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Hamilton Village Historic District is a national historic district located at Hamilton in Madison County, New York. The district contains 155 contributing buildings and one contributing site. Most of the buildings are residential, but the district also includes commercial structures, churches and public buildings. The centerpiece is the Village park, laid out in 1822. Located within the district are the separately listed Adon Smith House and U.S. Post Office building.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium is a 10,221-seat multi-purpose stadium in Hamilton, New York, United States. It is the home of Colgate University's football and men's lacrosse teams.Colgate opened the stadium in 1939, originally as Colgate Athletic Field. Colgate's football teams – then known as the Red Raiders and competing at the highest level of NCAA play – were coached during the stadium's inaugural year by Andy Kerr, who led the team from 1929 to 1946.The stadium adopted the name Andy Kerr Stadium on "Andy Kerr Day" on September 17, 1966, before a crowd of 8,000. The 87-year-old former coach was on hand to greet well-wishers and witness a 34-0 Colgate football victory over Boston University.Parts of the stadium have also been named to honor Raider athletes and coaches. A permanent main grandstand on the east (home team) side of the stadium was dedicated in 1991 to Frederick H. Dunlap, 1970s-80s football head coach and athletic director. The seven-lane, 400-meter running track around the field was dedicated to 1937 graduate R.L. Browning in September 1998; it serves as a training facility for 25 Colgate varsity programs.In 2003, a new three-story press box was constructed behind the west stands of the stadium, named for 1950s and 1960s football coach Hal Lahar and 1970s football player Robert Abeltin. In 2006, the stadium added a new scoreboard with video capability. After lacrosse player Michael Crown and his parents supported the installation of lights and FieldTurf in 2007, it was renamed Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium in 2014.

Hamilton Municipal Airport (ICAO: KVGC, FAA LID: VGC, formerly H30), opened in 1963, is a village-owned, public-use airport located one nautical mile (1.85 km) northeast of the central business district of Hamilton, a village in the Town of Hamilton, Madison County, New York, United States.Although many U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, this facility is assigned VGC by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA.

Class of 1965 Arena is a 2,222-seat multi-purpose arena in Hamilton, New York. It opened to the Colgate University Raiders men's and women's ice hockey teams on October 1, 2016, replacing Starr Arena which had been in service since 1959. The ice rink is named the Steven J. Riggs '65 Rink, in honor of Steven Riggs, one of Colgate's best hockey players in the program's history, who was killed in action on September 3, 1968, in Quy Thien, Vietnam. The facility was built partly with the aid of 559 donors, a significant number of whom represented the Colgate Class of 1965. The facility cost $37.8 million.

J. Howard Starr Rink is a 2,000-seat arena in Hamilton, New York. It opened in 1959 and was the home of the Colgate Raiders men's and women's ice hockey teams until 2016. The arena was dedicated in honor of former head coach John Howard Starr on December 11, 1959. The hockey arena was built as the southern half of the William A. Reid Athletic Center, a twin barrel-vaulted complex which also houses Cotterell Court. The complex is located on the western side of campus next to Andy Kerr Stadium and across Broad Street from Huntington Gymnasium, the school's former athletics facility. Prior to its completion, all Colgate home games were played on open-air surfaces and the lack of available ice caused the men's program to be shuttered from 1951 through 1957. The Rink served as the home of the women's program from their move to varsity status in 1997 until the Class of 1965 Arena was completed, upon which both programs migrated to the new facility.Currently, the building is being used as a basketball practice facility.

Cotterell Court is a 1,750-seat multi-purpose arena in Hamilton, New York. It was built in 1959 and is home to the Colgate University Raiders basketball and volleyball teams. It is named for Wesley M. Cotterell '19, a two-time letterwinner in basketball and school trustee. The basketball arena was built as the northern half of the William A. Reid Athletic Center, a twin barrel-vaulted complex which also houses Starr Rink. The complex is located on the western side of campus next to Andy Kerr Stadium and across Broad Street from Huntington Gymnasium, the school's former athletics facility. The hardwood was replaced in 2016 for the first time since the venue's opening. The gym has bleacher seating on three sides, with the main sides being the east and west sides and a much shorter section on the north side. The main entrance to the arena is on the south side, leading into the rest of the athletic center. Cotterell Court hosted the championship game of the 1995, 1996, 2019, and 2020 Patriot League men's basketball tournament and the 2004 Patriot League women's basketball tournament. It has also hosted many notable concerts over the years, often as part of Colgate's homecoming or other university events. These include a November 4, 1977 Grateful Dead show which was recorded and released in its entirety on their 2014 live album Dave's Picks Volume 12. Other concerts include The Doors with Stone Poneys in 1968, Bob Marley on Halloween in 1979, and Phish in 1993.

Colgate University is a private liberal arts college in Hamilton, New York. The college was founded in 1819 as the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York and operated under that name until 1823, when it was renamed Hamilton Theological and Literary Institution, often called Hamilton College (1823–1846), then Madison College (1846–1890), and its present name since 1890. Colgate University is among the 100 most selective colleges and universities in the United States, and is considered a Hidden Ivy as well as one of the Little Ivies. Colgate now enrolls approximately 3,200 students in 56 undergraduate majors that culminate in a Bachelor of Arts degree. The student body is 54% female and 46% male students who participate in over 200 clubs and organizations. While Colgate offers almost an entirely undergraduate program, it also has a small graduate program in Master of Arts in Teaching. The college competes in NCAA Division I sports and is part of the Patriot League athletic conference and ECAC Hockey.
