Herkimer, New York

The attack on German Flatts was the successful assault on the British colonial settlement of German Flatts, New York (present-day Herkimer, New York) by a combined French-Indian force on November 12, 1757 during the French and Indian War. Inhabited by Palatine colonists, the settlement's defenders (consisting of 75 militiamen) were defeated by the 300-strong force of attackers, and German Flatts was captured and destroyed. Between 40 and 50 of the colonists were killed, and 150 were captured; in comparison, the French-Indian force only suffered 5 wounded.

Herkimer is a village on the north side of the Mohawk River and the county seat of Herkimer County, New York, United States, about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Utica. As of the 2020 Census, it had a population of 7,234, and a predicted population of 7,283 on July 1, 2022. It was part of the Burnetsfield Patent and the first colonial settlement this far west in the Mohawk Valley. The village takes its name from the Herkimer family, Palatine German immigrants who settled in the area in 1723. The most notable family member was Nicholas Herkimer, a general of the Tryon County militia, who died from wounds received at the Battle of Oriskany in the American Revolutionary War. The village is located within the town of Herkimer and Herkimer County; together, they are referred to as "the Herkimers". The citizens of the village are served by three levels of government of the same name - the village, the town, and the county of Herkimer. (Only the residents of the village of Madison and New York County, also in New York, share a similar distinction.) Herkimer County Community College, located in the northwest part of the village, was founded in 1966 by the Herkimer County Board of Supervisors.

The attack on German Flatts (September 17, 1778) was a raid on the frontier settlement of German Flatts, New York (which then also encompassed what is now Herkimer) during the American Revolutionary War. The attack was made by a mixed force of Loyalists and Iroquois under the overall command of Mohawk leader Joseph Brant, and resulted in the destruction of houses, barns, and crops, and the taking of livestock for the raiders' use. The settlers, warned by the heroic run of Adam Helmer, took refuge in local forts but were too militarily weak to stop the raiders. Brant's attack was one of a series executed under his command or that of Loyalist and Seneca leaders against communities on what was then the frontier of western New York and northern Pennsylvania. New York authorities responded by ordering an expedition that destroyed Brant's forward operating bases in Iroquois territory.

St. Francis de Sales Regional Catholic School is a Roman Catholic middle school in Herkimer, New York. It is the only Catholic school in Herkimer County. The current school principal is Sister Rosalie J. Kelley, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The school was originally included Kindergarten through Grade 8. In 1999, the school expanded, allowing for a Pre-Kindergarten to be set up. After the 2005–06 academic year, the school was contracted, eliminating Grades 7 and 8 due to lack of enrollment. The school currently operates as a Pre-K through Grade 6 school.

US Post Office-Herkimer is a historic post office building located at Herkimer in Herkimer County, New York, United States. It was designed and built in 1933-1934 by consulting architect Ross Edgar Sluyter for the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department. It is a one-story, seven bay building faced with red brick laid in Flemish bond above a granite clad foundation in the Colonial Revival style. The five central bays are formed as a central pavilion and faced in terra cotta marked by Corinthian order pilasters.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Herkimer County Jail, also known as the 1834 Jail, is a historic jail in Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York. It is a two-story structure with high basement, five bays wide, of ashlar limestone blocks with dressed quoins built in 1835. It features a gable roof with oval window and narrow cornice and a Federal style entrance. Tours are regularly given by the Herkimer County Historical Society and a museum display highlights the cases of Chester Gillette (the "American Tragedy") and Roxalana Druse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The Reformed Church is a historic Reformed church at 405 N. Main Street in Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York. It was built in 1835 and is a two-story, painted brick structure with a stone rear wing. It features a staged spire in the Federal style, with a clock in the base of the spire.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Herkimer County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building in Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York. It is a three-story, wood-frame structure with painted brick walls built in 1873. It features an octagonal tower with arched openings and a mansard roof. It was the site of the 1906 trial of Chester Gillette.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Fort Dayton was an American Revolutionary War fort located on the north side of the Mohawk River at West Canada Creek, in what is now Herkimer, New York. A fort had previously been built on the same site during the French and Indian War. It should not be confused with Fort Herkimer, which was located on the south side of the Mohawk River, in German Flatts, New York.

Herkimer County Historical Society is located in the Eckler House which is adjacent to the 1884 Suiter Building, a historic home in Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, wood-frame structure with red pressed brick walls laid in black mortar built in 1884. It features a complex pitched roof of slate with a brick corbelled cornice and terra cotta ornament along the roof edge. There is also an octagonal peaked roof above the corner tower. Built originally as a private home, it was unfinished at the time of its builders death in 1925 and given to the Herkimer County Historical Society who occupied it in 1935. It the mid-1990s the Society built and renovated the adjacent Eckler House and moved its offices into that building. The Suiter building remained the museum and repository for artifacts and ephemera. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.The 1884 Herkimer County Historical Society Suiter Building Museum features exhibits about the county's early settlers and transportation, agriculture, industry and domestic life, and displays about the former Fairfield Academy. The Historical Society is open for research and tours Monday-Friday from 10:00 to 4:00.

Herkimer Memorial Hospital was a 70-bed located in Herkimer County, New York. In 1981, an oversight agency determined that this hospital, "the smallest of three serving the Mohawk Valley, should be converted from an acute-care facility into a nursing home." None of them wished to change. Herkimer closed in 1983.

WHMV-LP (97.5 FM; "V 97.5 FM") is a community low power radio station broadcasting a variety format. Licensed to Mohawk, New York, the station primarily serves Southern Herkimer County in New York state, commonly referred to as "the Valley" by people in the nearby Utica-Rome area. The station is owned by the Mohawk Valley Radio Group, Inc., and operates from studios on West Main Street in Mohawk.
