Pleasant Valley (town), New York

Pleasant Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in the southwestern part of the town of Pleasant Valley in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 1,145 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the larger New York–Newark–Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area.

The Newcomb–Brown Estate is located at the junction of the US 44 highway and Brown Road in Pleasant Valley, New York, United States. It is a brick structure built in the 18th century just before the Revolution and modified slightly by later owners but generally intact. Its basic Georgian style shows some influences of the early Dutch settlers of the region. At the time of its construction it was the home of Zaccheus Newcomb, a local farmer who owned much of the area of Pleasant Valley now surrounding the neighborhood. Over the 19th century, much of that original landholding was subdivided and sold off as the Brown family sold it to others, including the main house. In the early 20th century, it returned to the family again when one of his descendants bought it and converted it from working farm to country house, restoring and modifying it slightly while keeping its original integrity. In 1988 it and several outbuildings from the farming era were added to the National Register of Historic Places.

MacDonnell Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County, New York, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census.The community is in western Dutchess County, in the northeastern section of the town of Poughkeepsie. It is bordered to the southeast by Wappinger Creek, across which is the town of LaGrange. The CDP includes the hamlets of MacDonnell Heights and Colonial Heights. U.S. Route 44 (Dutchess Turnpike) passes through the center of the CDP, leading west 4 miles (6 km) to the center of Poughkeepsie and northeast 21 miles (34 km) to Amenia.

James Baird State Park is a 590-acre (2.4 km2) state park in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The park is located in the northern part of the Town of LaGrange, east of City of Poughkeepsie.

Top Cottage, also known as Hill-Top Cottage, in Hyde Park, New York, was a private retreat designed by and for Franklin D. Roosevelt. Built in 1938 to 1939, during Roosevelt's second term as President of the United States, it was designed to accommodate his need for wheelchair accessibility. It was one of the earliest such buildings in the country, and the first significant building designed by a person with a disability.Although it was meant as a retreat, FDR also received notable guests at the cottage, including Britain's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. After half a century in private ownership, the property was restored and given to the National Park Service, which today operates it as part of the nearby Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. Top Cottage was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1997. Guided tours of the cottage are available from the main site but private vehicles are not permitted. This building is the only building designed by a sitting U.S. president other than Thomas Jefferson, who designed several at his home in Monticello, Poplar Forest, the University of Virginia, and the Virginia State Capitol.

Salt Point is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 202. It lies northeast of Poughkeepsie following New York Route 115, the Salt Point Turnpike. East of Salt Point, the Taconic State Parkway allows for access to many of the surrounding towns and communities, with easy travel to New York City. The area code is 845.

LaGrange District Schoolhouse is a historic one-room school located at Freedom Plains, Dutchess County, New York. It was built about 1862, and is a one-story, rectangular frame building sheathed in clapboard. It has a front gable roof and sits on a stone foundation. It ceased operation as a school in 1942, and subsequently housed a local public library in the 1970s, and is now a local history museum.: 3 It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

LaGrange ( lə-GRAYNJ) is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 15,975 at the 2020 census. The town was named after the estate of the Marquis de Lafayette.

Crum Elbow Meeting House and Cemetery is a historic Society of Friends meeting house and cemetery in East Park, Dutchess County, New York. It was built in 1797, with an addition built about 1810. It is a two-story, white painted frame building with weather board siding and a moderately pitched gable roof. The surrounding rural cemetery contains plain Quaker style markers dated from about 1797 to 1890.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Innisfree Garden is an American nonprofit public garden influenced by Chinese style in Millbrook, New York. The garden was established between 1930 and 1960 as the private garden of Walter and Marion Beck, inspired by scroll paintings of the 8th-century Chinese poet and painter Wang Wei. With the help of landscape architect Lester Collins from Harvard University, individual garden scenes inspired by the Chinese paintings were connected to an overall landscape around a glacial lake, in keeping with the ecological surroundings. From 1960, the garden was managed by a foundation headed by Collins, and open to the public. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Dutchess County in 2019.
