Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion

The Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (German: Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung) is an institute located in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany specializing in chemical research on catalysis. It is one of the 86 institutes in the Max Planck Society (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft). It was founded in 1912 in Mülheim an der Ruhr as the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Coal Research (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Kohlenforschung) to study the chemistry and uses of coal, and became an independent Max Planck Institute in 1949.

The Freilichtbühne Mülheim an der Ruhr (Mülheim an der Ruhr Open-Air Theatre) is an open-air amphitheatre in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, built in 1936 as a Nazi Thingplatz. It is the most important open-air theatre in the Rhine-Ruhr region and with 2,000 seats, one of the largest in Germany.

The 2007 German Open Grand Prix (officially known as the Yonex German Open 2007 for sponsorship reasons) was a badminton tournament which took place in Mülheim from 27 February to 4 Mach 2007. It had a total purse of $80,000.

Mülheim, officially Mülheim an der Ruhr (German pronunciation: [ˈmyːlhaɪm ʔan deːɐ̯ ˈʁuːɐ̯] (listen)) and also described as "City on the River", is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It is located in the Ruhr Area between Duisburg, Essen, Oberhausen and Ratingen. It is home to many companies, especially in the food industry, such as the Aldi Süd Company, the Harke Group and the Tengelmann Group. Mülheim received its town charter in 1808, and 100 years later the population exceeded 100,000, making Mülheim officially a city. At the time of the city's 200th anniversary with approximately 170,000 residents, it was counted among the smaller cities of Germany.

Mülheim (Ruhr) Hauptbahnhof is a railway station for the city of Mülheim in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was renamed as a Hauptbahnhof in 1974 at the time of the rebuilding of the Dortmund–Duisburg line as part of the establishment of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 3 station.The original station is unusual in that it was built as two adjoining stations by the two main private railways buildings lines in the Ruhr area, the Rhenish Railway Company (Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, RhE) and the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company (Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn Gesellschaft, BME).

Rumbach (also: Ruhmbach) is a river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Ruhr in Mülheim.

The Museum zur Vorgeschichte des Films (English: Museum of the Prehistory of Film) is a permanent exhibition on the development of moving images before the invention of cinematography. Together with the world's largest walk-in camera obscura, the museum is housed in a 25.5 m high water tower in the Broich district of Mülheim. Together with the neighbouring roundhouse, the water tower is part of the Industrial Heritage Trail.

Mülheim (Ruhr) West station is located in the German city of Mülheim in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is on the Witten/Dortmund–Oberhausen/Duisburg line and is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 5 station.The station was opened 1 March 1862 by the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company and was called Mülheim (BM) station until 1892, when it was renamed Mülheim (Ruhr). Although it was larger than the station now known as Mülheim (Ruhr) Hauptbahnhof, it was not accepted as the town's main station, because it was too far from its central area. On 26 May 1974, it was renamed to its current name.It is served by Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn line S 3 every 30 minutes, tram line 112 (every 10 minutes) operated by Stadtwerke Oberhausen and Mülheimer VerkehrsGesellschaft, and bus line 128 (every 20 minutes) operated by Mülheimer VerkehrsGesellschaft. The former tram line 110 was replaced by bus 128 on 4 October 2015.

The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region (German: Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr) is the largest metropolitan region in Germany, with over ten million inhabitants. A polycentric conurbation with several major urban concentrations, the region covers an area of 7,110 square kilometres (2,750 sq mi), entirely within the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region spreads from the Ruhr area (Dortmund-Bochum-Essen-Duisburg) in the north to the urban areas of the cities of Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf (the state capital), Wuppertal, Leverkusen, Cologne (the region's largest and Germany's fourth largest city), and Bonn in the south. Styrum (German pronunciation: [ˈʃtiːʁʊm]; sometimes spelled "Stirum") was an immediate lordship in the Holy Roman Empire, located in Mülheim an der Ruhr, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It held no seat in the Diet and was circumvened by the Lordship of Broich. The exact date of construction of its castle is unknown. Styrum was already prosperous in Frankish times before Charlemagne (late 8th century). In 1067 Styrum was given to the Abbacy of Kaiserswerth. After the murder of the Archbishop of Cologne, Engelbert of Berg, in 1225, the descendants of Frederick I of Isenberg gained ownership of Mülheim on the river Ruhr and thereby of the castle Styrum and the castle Hohenlimburg on the river Lenne. They founded the line of Counts of Limburg zu Hohenlimburg and Lords of Limburg zu Styrum. The family obtained important estates in Westphalia and the Lower Rhine. With the partition of the House of Limburg Styrum in 1644, Styrum passed to the line of Limburg-Styrum-Styrum. Styrum was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1668, and it received its present form after a fire in 1738. In the mediatisation of 1806, Styrum came under control of the Grand Duchy of Berg. The line of Limburg-Styrum-Styrum became extinct in 1809. The last count of the Styrum branch of the family, Ernst Maria Johan (deceased on 23 March 1809) in his will of 29 January 1808 donated Styrum to the sister of his wife: Maria Margaretha von Humbracht, who sold it in 1825. Styrum was purchased by the German industrialist August Thyssen in 1890. His company gave the castle to the city of Mülheim in 1960. It was transformed into a restaurant, artist studio and community centre for the elderly in 1992. The community of Styrum is now part of the cities of Mülheim an der Ruhr and Oberhausen. Its local soccer team, FC Styrum, renamed FC Mülheim in 1975, was successful from the 1950s to the 1980s, even playing in the 2. Bundesliga-Nord. The name "Styrum" originates from "Stiarhem", meaning "Bulls Home" in the early medieval local dialect.
