The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin and St Michael the Archangel (Hungarian: Nagyboldogasszony székesegyház), commonly known as Vác Cathedral, is a religious building in the Catholic Church that serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Vác, is located in the city of Vác in Hungary.The diocese was founded in 1004 under Stephen I. The present church is the fifth structure on this site. The first cathedral was built in 1074, the same site of the present, but was destroyed in the fourteenth century, during the invasions of the Mongols. During the Ottoman occupation of Hungary the last remnants of the wall collapsed. Some of the residues are still visible today. Only after the departure of the Turks was possible to build a new church. Construction work began in 1761. Already in 1772 the cathedral was consecrated. The work continued until its completion in 1777. In 1944 during World War II a Soviet bomb hit the dome without actually detonating so a cool church parishioners remember what considered a "miracle".

The Diocese of Vác, (Latin: Dioecesis Vaciensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic church in Hungary, with its seat in Vác. The diocese was created in 1008 by St. Stephen, the first King of Hungary. Originally known as the "Diocese of Waitzen" in German, it is a suffragan diocese in the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Eger. The current bishop is Zsolt Marton, who was appointed in 2019.

Vác (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈvaːt͡s]; German: Waitzen; Slovak: Vacov; Yiddish: ווייצען) is a thousand-year old city in Pest county in Hungary with approximately 35,000 inhabitants. The archaic spelling of the name is Vácz.

The Battle of Vác, fought on 10 April 1849, was one of two important battles which took place in Vác during the Spring Campaign of the Hungarian War of Independence between the Austrian Empire and the Hungarian revolutionary army. The battle was the starting point of the second phase of the Spring Campaign, during which the Hungarians planned to relieve the fortress of Komárom from an Austrian siege, and to encircle the Austrian forces headquartered in the Hungarian capitals of Buda and Pest. The Hungarians won the battle. The Austrian commander, Major General Christian Götz, was fatally wounded, dying shortly after the battle. His body was buried by the Hungarian commander Artúr Görgei with full military honors as a mark of respect.
