It was formerly an enclave for Norwegians and Norwegian-Americans, who have recently become a minority in the area among the current residents, which include new immigrant colonies, among them Chinese and Arab-speaking peoples. Parts of it have been colloquially re-christened Little Hong Kong in recognition of these newer communities.The avenue starts at its north at Grand Army Plaza, going through Park Slope for 1 mile (1.6 km). It is interrupted by the Green-Wood Cemetery between 20th and 39th Streets, and after traveling nearly 2 miles (3.2 km) further south through Sunset Park, finally ends at 73rd Street in Bay Ridge.

Bocchino-Dente Memorial Plaza is a 0.853-acre plaza located at the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway, 58th Street and 10th Avenue in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn, New York. The neighborhood's streets were laid out in a grid of streets and avenues at the turn of the 20th century while Fort Hamilton Parkway cuts diagonally through the grid on its route between Prospect Park and Bay Ridge. Triangular intersections that were too small to be developed were designated as public plazas, including this one. The plaza adjoins the school yard of Public School 105 The Blythebourne School, which carries the old name of Borough Park. In 1952, local City Councilman Arthur A. Low sponsored legislation to designate this triangle as the Bocchino-Dente Memorial Plaza in honor of local residents John Bocchino and Alfred Dente, who had been killed in the Second World War. The renaming was supported by the local post of the American Legion which carried the name Bocchino-Dente Post 1777. The local law to designate this plaza with this name was enacted on May 15, 1952 after the signature of the mayor of New York.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a church in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York City. It is located on 5th Avenue between 59th and 60th Streets in the Sunset Park neighborhood and occupies half the length of the block between 5th and 6th Avenues, with the rectory and ancillary buildings occupying the remainder of the blocks. The Basilica is visible from the Gowanus Expressway two blocks west. It is popularly referred to by its initials, OLPH. The parish celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017.

It is one of over 200 Coptic Orthodox Churches in the United States.

Sunset Park is a neighborhood in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City, bounded by Park Slope and Green-Wood Cemetery to the north, Borough Park to the east, Bay Ridge to the south, and Upper New York Bay to the west. The neighborhood is named after a 24.5-acre (9.9 ha) public park of the same name, located between 41st and 44th Streets and Fifth and Seventh Avenues. The region north of 36th Street is also known as Greenwood Heights or South Slope. The area was initially occupied by the Canarsee Indians until the first European settlement occurred in 1636. Through the late 19th century, Sunset Park was sparsely developed, and it was considered to be part of Bay Ridge or South Brooklyn. The arrival of elevated railways and the subway led to Sunset Park's development, with many middle-class row houses and several industrial hubs being erected in the 1890s through the 1920s. After the decline of the industrial hubs in the 1940s and 1950s, the name "Sunset Park" was given to the region north of 65th Street as part of an urban renewal initiative. Immigrant groups started moving to the neighborhood in the late 20th century due to its relative affordability, and the neighborhood's population was primarily composed of Hispanics, Chinese and Indians (along with less perceptible swaths of predominantly white young urban professionals and the remaining vestiges of earlier, working class Scandinavian, Irish and Italian communities) by the 21st century. Sunset Park is part of Brooklyn Community District 7. It is patrolled by the 72nd Precinct of the New York City Police Department. Fire services are provided by the New York City Fire Department's Engine Company 201 and Engine Company 228/Ladder Company 114. Politically, Sunset Park is represented by the New York City Council's 38th and 39th Districts.

On the morning of April 12, 2022, a mass shooting was committed on a northbound N train on the New York City Subway in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York, United States. At approximately 8:24 a.m. EDT, a man reported to be 62-year-old Black nationalist Frank Robert James put on a gas mask, threw two smoke grenades, and fired a handgun 33 times. The shooting occurred as the train was traveling between the 59th Street and 36th Street stations. Twenty-nine people were injured, ten of them from direct gunfire; the remaining injuries were from smoke inhalation. Most passengers disembarked at 36th Street, where some passengers fled onto an R train that traveled one additional stop to 25th Street. On the day after the attack, Frank James was arrested as the suspect after a large manhunt. James was charged by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York with committing a terrorist act on a mass transit system and discharging a firearm during the commission of a Crime of Violence, to which James pleaded not guilty. On January 3, 2023, James pled guilty to federal terrorism charges.

John J. Pershing Intermediate School 220, is a public middle school located at 4812 Ninth Avenue in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. It was founded in the 1930s, and was named after World War I general John J. Pershing. IS 220 is a magnet school for science-oriented education. It is divided into three "mini schools": the Health & Biomedical School, the School for Architecture & Mathematics and the Academy of Environmental Sciences. Top students in the school had been admitted to school such as Stuyvesant High School The Bronx High School of Science; Brooklyn Technical High School; Midwood High School; and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High SchoolThe school's population is 51% Asian, 42% Hispanic, 6% White and 2% Black. A quarter of the Asian population are new immigrants to the United States.

During rush hours, several W and northbound Q trains also serve the station.The 59th Street station was constructed as part of the Fourth Avenue Line, which was approved in 1905. Construction on the segment of the line that includes 59th Street started on March 15, 1913, and was completed in 1915. The station opened on June 22, 1915, as the southernmost station of the initial portion of the BMT Fourth Avenue Line. The station's platforms were lengthened in 1926–1927, and again during the 1960s. Elevator access was added in late 2020, in tandem with a station renovation between 2018 and 2020 to make the station compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Located at 53rd Street and Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, it is served by the R train at all times. The N train also stops here during late nights, and some rush-hour W trains stop here in the peak direction. The 53rd Street station was constructed as part of the Fourth Avenue Line, which was approved in 1905. Construction on the segment of the line that includes 53rd Street started on March 15, 1913, and was completed in 1915. The station opened on September 22, 1915, after the opening of the initial portion of the BMT Fourth Avenue Line to 59th Street. The station's platforms were lengthened in 1926–1927, and again during a renovation in 1968–1970. The station was renovated again in 2017.
