Cawdor (Roman fort)

Kilravock Castle (pronounced Kilrawk) is located near the village of Croy, between Inverness and Nairn, in the council area of Highland, Scotland. It was begun around 1460 and has been the seat of the Clan Rose since that time. The castle is a composite of a 15th-century tower house and several later additions. The original name for the castle was Cill Rathaig; Scottish Gaelic meaning "church at the small circular fort".

Croy (Gaelic: Crothaigh) is a village between Inverness and Nairn, in the Highland council area in Scotland. The village looks over the Moray Firth and is located a few miles from Inverness Airport. The estimated population of the village is 498 according to the adjusted 2011 census.

Dun Evan or the Doune of Cawdor is a hill fort located 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) south west of Cawdor in the Highland area of Scotland. It is situated on a rocky hill that rises to 678 feet (207 m) above ordnance datum between the valleys of the River Nairn and its tributary the Allt Dearg. The site has a wide view in all directions, extending to the mouth of the River Nairn at the town of Nairn, 7 miles to the north east on the shore of the Moray Firth. Dun Evan is scheduled by Historic Environment Scotland as a site of national importance.A ruined wall surrounds the summit of the hill, enclosing an area measuring 58 metres (190 ft) by 25 metres (82 ft), surviving to an average internal height of 0.4 metres (1.3 ft) and spread to a width of up to 10 metres (33 ft). Facing stones and traces of vitrification were recorded from this wall in 1963 and a dip in the wall in the north east suggests it was the entrance to the enclosure. A wall enclosing a smaller area of the summit marks a second phase of the defences, probably built with stones removed from the fortifications of the earlier phase. The small size of the stones of the inner walls of the fort suggest that they were timber-laced. Within the fort a circular depression measuring approximately 3.5 metres (11 ft) in diameter and 0.6 metres (2.0 ft) deep has been interpreted as a well or a cistern.The fort is surrounded by a series of outer defences further down the flanks of the rock, including a 180 feet (55 m) arc of ruined walling and earthworks to the south west, and a similar 130 feet (40 m) arc to the north east. Within the north east tip of this second arc is a further defensive wall whose surviving height was measured in 1957 as up to 14 feet (4.3 m), and which extended about 60 feet (18 m) back to the southern apex of the rock This was connected to the outer arc by two parallel radial stretches of wall about 25 feet (7.6 m) to 35 feet (11 m) apart, which together formed a rectilinear plan which may represent a building or reinforcing cross-walls, but appear to have been built on a larger scale than the rest of the defences.

Clephanton is a small hamlet 2 miles south-east from Ardersier and 7 miles south-west of Nairn in Inverness-shire, Scottish Highlands. It is in the Scottish council area of Highland. Some notable features near the settlement include the Kilravock Castle and the Nairn River.

Gollanfield is a village on the A96 road between Inverness and Nairn, in the Highland Council Area, Scotland.For 110 years, the village had a station on the railway between Inverness and Elgin. The original station opened in 1855 and was sited further west than the second station (opened in 1899) which was just east of the B9006 road. The station was moved so that it could be the junction site for a small railway to Ardersier (Fort George). The station was closed in May 1965, but the railway is still open.

Gollanfield Junction was a railway station located at Gollanfield, to the west of Nairn, Scotland, (now in the Highland Council Area). Opened in 1855 by the Inverness and Nairn Railway, it was initially named Fort George after the military base nearby.In July 1899 the Highland Railway opened a direct branch to Fort George (which was actually sited in the village of Ardersier). With the opening of the branch, the station was renamed Gollanfield Junction. Passenger services on the branch were withdrawn in 1943 and it closed to all traffic in August 1958. The following year, the station was renamed Gollanfield by British Railways.Goods traffic at the station ceased in May 1964 and it was closed to passenger traffic on 3 May 1965 (along with all the other remaining stations between Nairn & Inverness) as a result of the Beeching Axe.Most of the buildings were subsequently demolished after closure, but the station house remain standing and is used as a private residence. A single line remains in use by passenger trains between Inverness, Elgin and Aberdeen.

Dalcross, in the original Gaelic, Dealgan Cros, later shortened to Dealgros, is a location in the Highland region of Scotland. It is on the Moray Firth about 10 km (6 miles) east-north-east of Inverness and contains Inverness Airport, Dalcross industrial estate, Dalcross Castle and Dalcross Forest.

Tornagrain (from the Scottish Gaelic Tòrr na Grèine meaning 'The Sunny Mound') is a hamlet and planned village in the Scottish Highlands, situated around 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Inverness. It falls within the Highland council area for local government purposes. Tornagrain lies 1.2 miles (2 km) south of Inverness (Dalcross) Airport; and 1.5 miles (2.5 km) east of Castle Stuart Golf Course which was developed in 2009 and hosted the Barclays Scottish Open Championship for the first time in 2011. Plans to expand Tornagrain into a community for more than 10,000 residents were submitted to planning authorities by the Moray Estate. Planning permission was granted for the building of 5,000 homes in September 2012. The development of the site will take place over many years. Developers claim Tornagrain is the first new town to be built in Scotland for more than 50 years.

Dalcross Castle is a restored 17th century tower house, about 1+1⁄2 miles (2.5 kilometres) southwest of Croy, Highland, Scotland, and about 7 miles (11 kilometres) northeast of Inverness. The castle stands on a ridge.

Moray Firth School was an independent school located at Gollanfield, between Inverness and Nairn, Scotland. It was open 2002–2010 and during that period was the only independent school in the Highland council area.

Cawdor (Scottish Gaelic: Caladair) is a village and parish in the Highland council area, Scotland. The village is 5 miles (8 kilometres) south-southwest of Nairn and 12 miles (19 kilometres) east of Inverness. The village is in the Historic County of Nairnshire.

Cawdor Castle is a castle in the parish of Cawdor in Nairnshire, Scotland. It is built around a 15th-century tower house, with substantial additions in later centuries. Originally a property of the Calder family, it passed to the Campbells in the 16th century. It remains in Campbell ownership, and is now home to the Dowager Countess Cawdor, stepmother of Colin Campbell, 7th Earl Cawdor. The castle is best known for its literary connection to William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, in which the title character is made "Thane of Cawdor". However, the story is highly fictionalised, and the castle itself, which is never directly referred to in Macbeth, was built many years after the life of the 11th-century King Macbeth. The castle is a category A listed building, and the grounds are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national listing of significant gardens.
