South Shore Estuary

The Moorings is a guard-gated private community in the unincorporated East Islip hamlet of Suffolk County, New York and is not a census-designated place (CDP) within itself. It is situated on Long Island's Great South Bay.

Heckscher State Park is a 1,657-acre (6.71 km2) state park on the shore of the Great South Bay at East Islip in Suffolk County, New York, USA.

Clam Pond is a small cove (despite its name) in the Great South Bay, on the north side of Fire Island between Saltaire and Fair Harbor in Suffolk County, New York. It is a popular spot for kayaking and small boat sailing.

Fair Harbor is a small community hamlet located near the western end of Fire Island. It is a part of the Town of Islip on Long Island, New York. With approximately 350 homes within its 13-block town limits, the town features a few stores and other amenities, giving it old-style charm with the security of a state-of-the-art Fire Department and EMS. Moreover, the small town is mere steps away from the easily accessible beach, and the bay front is incredibly active during the summer months.

Dunewood is a small beach community in the western end of Fire Island, New York State. With about 100 homes originally all built on an identical floor plan, While the community specifically does not market itself to tourists and short-term renters, it is a popular location for long-term residents, and properties are rarely for sale. The community has only very limited facilities, and while during summertime, it shares a doctor with nearby Fair Harbor, during other times of the year, serious medical cases have to be medevaced by helicopter. Dunewood, like many neighboring communities, suffers from coastal erosion, which the community in the early 2000s was attempting to control via beach replenishment, the sand replacement funded by taxes levied through each community's erosion control district. Environmental concerns have however hindered similar projects on Fire Island for decades.

Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge is located in the hamlet of Islip, New York, on the south shore of Long Island. It is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The refuge consists of 196 acres (0.79 km2) bordering the Great South Bay, separated from the Atlantic Ocean only by Fire Island. Situated in a heavily developed urban area along Champlin Creek, the refuge is an oasis for many species of migratory birds and waterfowl. Approximately one half of the refuge consists of tidal marsh, which serves a vast number of waterfowl in the winter months. The refuge attracts waterbirds, white-tailed deer, red fox, and migratory songbirds and raptors. The refuge has been classified as part of the larger Great South Bay, a significant coastal habitat. Management activities include forest and grassland protection and management, wetland restoration, wildlife nesting structure maintenance, and habitat restoration.

Lonelyville is a small, beach community located in the western end of Fire Island, and is a hamlet in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Lonelyville has approximately 80 houses and is located between the communities of Dunewood and Atlantique. As on much of Fire Island, cars are generally not permitted in Lonelyville during the summer months and bicycles are the principal means of wheeled transport. The closest ferry service is to Dunewood from Bay Shore on Long Island. There are no stores, cafes, bars, or other facilities in Lonelyville, but it is a fairly easy walk, or bike ride, to Fair Harbor which serves as a town center for the community. The majority of the houses are predominantly summer-only vacation cottages, and consequently there are only a handful of year-round residents. Probably the most famous past residents of Lonelyville were Mel Brooks and his wife Anne Bancroft, who had an ocean-front house there for many years. Brooks purportedly wrote many of his movies and comedy sketches there. Incidentally, the structure was the first project to be designed and built by famed architect, Richard Meier in 1963.

Saltaire is a village on Fire Island in Islip, Suffolk County, New York, United States. The year-round population was 37 at the 2010 census, which, as a summer beach community, increases many times over in the summer.

Ocean Beach is a village in the southern part of the Town of Islip, on Fire Island, within Suffolk County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 79. Known for its strict local ordinances, the village is nicknamed "The Land of No".The Incorporated Village of Ocean Beach is a popular tourist destination, due to its beachfront location accompanied by a commercial district featuring nightlife, hotels, waterfront restaurants, and a variety of stores.

Wereholme, also known as the Harold H. Weekes Estate, and the Scully Estate, is a historic estate located at Islip in Suffolk County, New York. The mansion was built in 1917 in the French Provincial style for Lousine Peters and her husband Harold H. Weekes.It was designed by architect Grosvenor Atterbury (1869–1956) and is a "L" shaped structure built of concrete block. It is three stories high with a hipped roof and the servants' wing is two stories with a clipped cross-gable roof. Also on the property are two garages, greenhouse, barrel vaulted dovecote, and entrance pillars from South Bay Avenue.

Champlin Creek is on Long Island, located between the hamlets of Islip and East Islip, flowing southward into the Great South Bay between the Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge and The Moorings. The fish and wildlife habitat is an approximate three and one-half mile length of the stream, extending from Knapps Lake, just north of the Main Street, to near its headwaters north of the Southern State Parkway. Champlin Creek is a relatively clean, cold, free-flowing, freshwater stream, generally less than 6 feet (1.8 m) wide, partially vegetated sandy substrate. The creek is bordered by limited areas of wet forest land and suburban residential development. Champlin Creek is one of only a few free-flowing, spring-fed streams on Long Island that have remained in a relatively natural state. This creek provides habitat conditions suitable for natural reproduction by brook trout, and supports one of approximately 6 known wild populations of this species on Long Island. In addition to the native fish populations in Champlin Creek, brown trout and rainbow trout are stocked in the stream by the NYSDEC, provide a recreational fishery of county-level significance. Public access for fishing the area is available along the east side of Knapps Lake and at road crossings.

Kismet is a hamlet in the town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is the westernmost beach community on Fire Island, immediately west of Saltaire and east of the Fire Island Light. Kismet is accessible by road or on foot via Robert Moses State Park to the west, or by ferry from Bay Shore on Long Island. Facilities in Kismet include a marina, a few stores (the Kismet Market, Beach & Vine Wines & Spirits and the Red Wagon Emporium), Margarita Villas LLC Vacation Rentals, and three restaurants, Fire Island Tap (located at Margarita Villas), the Kismet Inn and the Surf's Out.
