The school and town were chronicled in the book "Where Dreams Die Hard" by Carlton Stowers, which follows the team for an entire season of football (after dropping the sport for 40 years, the school resumed play in 2000). In 2007, Penelope made the football playoffs for the first time in school history, though it lost in the first round.

The city is located in the north-central part of Texas, approximately 70 miles (110 km) south of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, 20 miles north of Waco and 120 miles north of Austin, the state's capital. Despite its name, the city is not located within the region of West Texas; area residents sometimes call the community "West comma Texas" to avoid repetition.As of 2012 it has one of the largest concentrations of Czech Texans of any city in the state.

West High School is a public high school located in West, Texas (USA) and classified as a 3A school by the UIL. It is part of the West Independent School District located in northern McLennan County. In 2015, the school was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency.The campus was heavily damaged in the April 2013 West Fertilizer Company explosion and demolition of the school building began in mid-December 2013. Classes were held at a temporary site until the new West High School campus opened in 2015.

The Czech Stop and Little Czech Bakery is a combination deli/bakery and convenience store located in the city of West, Texas. Established in 1983, the store serves traditional Czech cuisine such as kolache, klobasnek and strudels. The city is notable for its Czech heritage and was designated as the "Home of the official Kolache of the Texas Legislature". The store serves around 600 people a day and is a popular stop for travelers along Interstate 35. According to a poster in the store, the Czech Stop uses over 1,200 lbs of cream cheese, 9,000 lbs of flour, 750 gallons of milk, 2,400 lbs of butter 1,300 lbs of sausage, 2,100 dozen eggs, and 2,500 lbs of American cheese each week to produce its baked goods.The Czech Stop remained open after the West Fertilizer Company explosion on April 17, 2013, to serve local residents and first responders.The store has been featured in Southern Living, Primetime: What Would You Do? on ABC, and on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The Crash at Crush was a one-day publicity stunt in the U.S. state of Texas that took place on September 15, 1896, in which two uncrewed locomotives were crashed into each other head-on at high speed. William George Crush, general passenger agent of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad, conceived the idea in order to demonstrate a staged train wreck as a public spectacle. No admission was charged, and train fares to the crash site – called Crush, set up as a temporary destination for the event – were offered at the reduced rate of US$3.50 in 1896 (equivalent to $125.35 in 2023) from any location in Texas. As a result, an estimated 40,000 people – more people than the second-largest city in state at the time – attended the event. Unexpectedly, the impact caused both engine boilers to explode, resulting in a shower of flying debris that killed two people and caused numerous injuries among the spectators.

TSTC Waco Airport (IATA: CNW, ICAO: KCNW, FAA LID: CNW) is a public use airport located eight nautical miles (9 mi, 15 km) northeast of the central business district of Waco, a city in McLennan County, Texas, United States. Before 1968, it was known as James Connally Air Force Base. The airport is owned by Texas State Technical College. It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025, which categorized it as a general aviation facility.The facility is currently used as an industrial airpark operated by Texas State Technical College System for their aviation programs, and is noted for being the largest airport in the United States owned by an educational institution.
