County Down (Parliament of Ireland constituency)

Down was a county constituency of the Parliament of Northern Ireland from 1921 to 1929. It returned eight MPs, using proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.

Gawley's Gate (From Irish Geata Mhic Amhlaí) is a small village in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is situated on the south-eastern shore of Lough Neagh, seven miles to the north of Lurgan and ten miles west of Lisburn. It has a jetty and picnic areas, popular amongst many boating enthusiasts on the Lough.[1] It consists of a small number of houses in close proximity; however, it is a focal point for much of the countryside on the shore of Lough Neagh from Glenavy to Aghagallon. The rural location means that much of the community is involved in farming in some capacity as well as fishing. The landscape is quite wet with marshland in places and dense woods giving way to cleared hillocks or 'islands' where settlements have developed. It also a popular destination with wildfowlers and birdwatchers due to the habitat which exists particularly around the RSPB sanctuary at nearby Portmore Lough.[2] The name "Gawley's Gate" is attributed to the family that controlled the toll gate when this section of the road was first constructed in the 17th century. The quay and picnic area at Gawley's Gate was constructed with funding from the European Peace Programme and was opened by the First Minister David Trimble and Agriculture Minister Bríd Rodgers on 7 May 2007. There has been ongoing residential development in the area in recent years, with three separate developments being constructed: Loughview, Bayview and James Lodge. In total these three developments would have about 100 houses. Until recently there was a small shop, a post office and a petrol station beside the Gate Inn; however, the Post Office closed in the late 1990s, and the shop closed shortly afterwards.

Bovedy is a meteorite that fell in the area of Bovedy, Northern Ireland, on 25 April 1969. After entering the atmosphere over the Bristol Channel, it traversed Wales and the Irish Sea before landing near Limavady.The meteorite had broken into two pieces. One piece smashed through the asbestos roof of a shop in Sprucefield, breaking into two further pieces. A larger piece of the meteorite was recovered days later in a farm field in Bovedy, 60 kilometres (37 mi) away.

Derrymore (from Irish Doire Mór 'great oak-grove') is a small village and townland in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 243 people. It lies on the shores of Lough Neagh, within the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area. The village is a linear settlement comprising residential development and a primary school, but no other community facilities.

Ram’s Island is the largest island in Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland. It lies near the eastern shore of the lake and is about one mile (1.5 kilometres) long by one-quarter mile (400 metres) wide. Thickly wooded, it is a wildlife haven and includes the ruins of a medieval Irish round tower.

Aghagallon (from Irish Achadh Gallan, meaning 'field of the standing stone') is a small village and civil parish in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is about ten miles west of Lisburn and three miles northeast of Lurgan and had a population of 824 in the 2001 Census. Aghagallon has mainly developed along Aghalee Road in a linear fashion with development to the southeast along Colane Road. St Patrick's Church and the adjacent primary school are in the middle of the village. Although the village is named after the townland of Aghagallon, it lies almost wholly within neighbouring Derrynaseer townland.

Aghalee (from Irish Achadh Lí, meaning 'field of calves') is a village, townland and civil parish in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is three miles from the southeast corner of Lough Neagh on the main road between Lurgan and Antrim and about 13 kilometres west of Lisburn. The village lies on the steep wooded slopes of Friar's Glen and is beside the now disused Lagan Navigational Canal. In the 2001 Census, Aghalee had a population of 774. Aghalee has several places of worship, a community hall, Orange Hall, GP Surgery, filling station and shop, a pharmacy and fast food takeaway. The village has a vocational training centre, a nursing home and a children's day nursery. Ulsterbus services link the village with Lisburn, Antrim, Lurgan and Belfast.

Lower Ballinderry (from Irish: Baile an Doire, meaning "townland of the oak grove") is a small village to the west of Upper Ballinderry in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is within the townland and civil parish of Ballinderry and the historic barony of Massereene Upper. The village lies a short distance to the southeast of Portmore Lough (a.k.a. Lough Beg) and Lough Neagh, 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) west of Lisburn. In the 2011 census it had a population of 912.The village sits at a crossroads that linked the medieval church site of Aghagallon (Ballinderry Old Graveyard), and later to the Plantation site of Portmore Castle. The village has at its core Ballinderry Moravian Church, a listed building, which, along with other listed structures, forms a distinct core to the settlement around the crossroads. It has a pre-eminently 18th century character, visible in buildings, in form and layout, and in the lime tree plantings. The local primary school is Lower Ballinderry Primary School. There is an Ulsterbus service between Lower Ballinderry and Lisburn as well as Lower Ballinderry and Lurgan.

The 1990 Lough Neagh ambush was a gun attack carried out by the Provisional IRA on 10 November 1990 at Castor Bay, near Morrows Point, Lough Neagh, County Armagh, Northern Ireland targeting members of the security forces involved in a waterfowl hunting trip with other two men at the time. An active service unit of the IRA's North Armagh Brigade shot dead a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) Inspector, an RUC Reservist, a former Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) soldier and one civilian. Some members of the wildfowling party struggled with their attackers, and one of the constables returned fire before being killed.

Portmore Lough (from Irish Loch an Phoirt Mhóir 'lake of the great landing place') is a small lake in southwest County Antrim, Northern Ireland that drains water into nearby Lough Neagh. It is roughly circular and covers an area of 286 hectares (710 acres). The Lough and its shoreland is designated a Ramsar site, a Special Protection Area (SPA) and an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI). The lough is now part of a Royal Society for the Protection of Birds nature reserve.The lough is near the site of the former Portmore Castle, erected in 1664 and removed in 1761. It is also the presumed location of the Portmore Ornament Tree whose demise in a windstorm of 1760 is lamented in the Irish folk song, Bonny Portmore.Portmore Lough has the alternative name Lough Beg (Loch Bheag, or "small lake"), not to be confused with the Lough Beg on the Lower Bann.

Langford Lodge Airfield is a former United States Army Air Forces and Royal Air Force station near Belfast, Northern Ireland. Today the airfield is owned by RLC (UK) a subsidiary of RLC Engineering Group which is headquartered in the Isle of Man. Langford Lodge is located on the eastern shores of Lough Neagh and close to RAF Aldergrove/Belfast International Airport and the former RAF Nutts Corner. The site was also known as No. 20 Satellite Landing Ground.

Pritchard's Bridge station was constructed by the Ulster Railway between Moira and Lurgan on 01/10/1842; closure is presumed in 1844? The site of the station is on the mainline of the Belfast-Newry Line and Dublin Connolly Line.
