Camp Courtney

Uruma (うるま市, Uruma-shi) is a city located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The modern city of Uruma was established on April 1, 2005, when the cities of Gushikawa and Ishikawa were merged with the towns of Katsuren and Yonashiro (both from Nakagami District). As of May 1, 2013, the city has an estimated population of 118,330 and a population density of 1,400 people per km2. The total area is 86.00 km2. The city covers part of the east coast of the south of Okinawa Island, the Katsuren Peninsula, and the eight Yokatsu Islands. The Yokatsu Islands include numerous sites important to the Ryukyuan religion, and the city as a whole has numerous historical sites, including: Katsuren Castle, Agena Castle, and Iha Castle and the Iha Shell Mound. It is home to the largest venue for Okinawan bullfighting. The Mid-Sea Road, which crosses the ocean and connects the Yokatsu Islands to the main island of Okinawa, is now a symbol of Uruma.Uruma is noted for its role in hosting large-scale refugee camps and the initial organization of local government of Okinawa immediately after the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. As such the city is considered the home of the starting point of the restoration of civil life in Okinawa immediately after the end of World War II. United States maintains four military bases in Uruma, some of which span other municipalities in Okinawa: Kadena Ammunition Storage Area, Camp McTureous, Camp Courtney, and White Beach Naval Facility]]. The bases cover 12.97% of the total area of the city. Two controversies have surrounded American military bases in Uruma: the 1959 Okinawa F-100 crash which killed and injured numerous students and residents, and the transport of Agent Orange via the White Beach Naval Facility for testing in Okinawa in the early 1960s as part of the classified Project AGILE.

Agena Castle (安慶名城, Agena jō, Okinawan: Agina Gushiku or Aginaa Gushiku) is a Ryukyuan gusuku located in the north of Agena district of Uruma, Okinawa, in former Gushikawa City. It was built on a base of Ryukyuan limestone and occupies 8,000 square metres (86,000 sq ft). Agena Castle sits at an altitude of 49 metres (161 ft), and is naturally protected by the Tengan River to the north.

Camp McTureous (Japanese: キャンプ・マクトリアス Kyampu Makutoriasu) is part of Marine Corps Base Butler in Kawasaki and Nishihara, Uruma City, Okinawa, Japan. Located in the western part of Agena district of Uruma City, Camp McTureous is equipped with family residential facilities, sports facilities and an elementary school. The camp is named in honor of Robert M. McTureous, Jr., a Marine Private who was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry and sacrifice of life during the Battle of Okinawa.

Kyan Castle (喜屋武城, Kyan jō, Okinawan: Chan Gushiku) is a Ryukyuan gusuku in Uruma, Okinawa. It was controlled by the Ōgawa Aji of Agena Castle until it was destroyed by the Ryukyu Kingdom.

The Iha Shell Mound (伊波貝塚, Iha Kaidzuka) is the site of the remains of an ancient settlement on Okinawa Island. Located in the Iha district of Uruma City, south of Ishikawa, the site sits on a large limestone fault slope, and dates from the late Shellmound period of Okinawan archaeology, coinciding with the late Jōmon period, c. 2500 – 1000 BC. The shell mound is approximately 60 centimetres (24 in) thick and covers an area of 150 square metres (1,600 sq ft). The site was first discovered in 1920 by Ōyama Kashiwa, confirming that Okinawa was settled by ancient peoples, and is one of only a few fully excavated shell mounds in Okinawa. The site includes remains of fish and animal bones, earthen and stoneware, and goods made out of horn.

Ishikawa (石川市, Ishikawa-shi, Okinawan: Ishichā) was a city located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The city was founded on September 26, 1945. It was named after the nearby Mount Ishikawa and the Ishikawa River. As of 2003, the city had an estimated population of 22,126 and a density of 1,052.12 persons per km². The total area was 21.03 km². On April 1, 2005, Ishikawa, along with the city of Gushikawa, and the towns of Katsuren and Yonashiro (both from Nakagami District), was merged to create the city of Uruma.

The 1959 Okinawa F-100 crash (Japanese: 宮森小学校米軍機墜落事故), also known as the Miyamori Elementary School crash (宮森小学校米軍機墜落事故), occurred on June 30, 1959, when a North American F-100 Super Sabre of the United States Air Force crashed in Ishikawa, in United States-occupied Okinawa, killing 18 people.

Iha Castle (伊波城, Iha jō, Okinawan: Ifa Gushiku) is a Ryukyuan gusuku in Uruma, Okinawa. It sits on a cliff that separates Iha from Ishikawa, with a grand view of the Ishikawa Isthmus. The castle is in ruins, with nothing left of the original structures save the walls. There are also multiple Ryukyuan shrines in the bailey. Based on artifacts found in and around the castle, it has been estimated to have been in use around the 13th to 15th centuries. The Okinawa Prefectural government erected a stone Torii in front of one of the castle gates, along with a plaque describing it.

Kurashiki Dam is a rock-fill dam located in Okinawa prefecture in Japan. The dam is used for flood control and water supply. The catchment area of the dam is 104.7 km2. The dam impounds about 77 ha of land when full and can store 7100 thousand cubic meters of water. The construction of the dam was started on 1979 and completed in 1994.

The Southeast Botanical Gardens (東南植物楽園, Tōnan Shokubutsu Rakuen) is a commercial botanical garden located in the city of Okinawa, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The garden is open daily; an admission fee is charged.The gardens covers 100 acres (40.47 ha) and contain over 2,000 plant species, including some 450 species of palms, as well as flowers, fruit trees, a Polynesian Lake with carp, and an insect collection. The Southeast Botanical Gardens closed in December 2010 and reopened on July 6, 2013 under a new management company, the Tapic Group.

Chibana Castle (知花城, Chibana jō, Okinawan: Chibana gushiku), also known as Goeku Castle (越来城, Goeku jō, Okinawan: Gwiiku gushiku) was a Ryukyuan gusuku on Okinawa Island. In the Chibana district of Okinawa City, the castle site sits on a hill and is surrounded by jungle.

Mount Ishikawa (石川岳, Ishikawa dake, Okinawan: Ishichā-daki) is a mountain in Uruma City, Okinawa. It is the highest point in the city, standing at 204 metres (669 ft). The former city of Ishikawa was named after this mountain and the nearby Ishikawa River. There are hiking trails to the summit, although some have become overgrown.
