Wilson–Miller Farm

Mount Airy, also known as Grove Farm, is a historic home located at Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It is a 2+1⁄2-story Flemish bond brick house, built about 1821 with elements of the Federal and Greek Revival styles. Also on the property are a probable 1820s one-story gable-roofed brick structure that has been extensively altered over time, a late-19th-century frame barn with metal roof ventilators, a 2-story frame tenant house built about 1900, and a mid-20th-century cinder block animal shed. It was used as a hospital for Confederate and Union soldiers following the Battle of Antietam. On October 3, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln and General George McClellan visited Mount Airy, an event recorded photographically by Alexander Gardner.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Hagerstown Valley is located in Maryland in the United States. It is part of the Great Appalachian Valley, which continues northward as Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania, and southward as Shenandoah Valley in West Virginia and Virginia. Hagerstown Valley is bounded on the east by South Mountain, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On the west the valley is bounded by the Bear Pond Mountains — a range of mountains linking Blue Mountain and North Mountain. The valley is bounded on the south by the Potomac River and on the north by the drainage divide between Conococheague Creek, which flows south to the Potomac River, and Conodoguinet Creek, which flows northeast to the Susquehanna River. Sometimes the boundary between Hagerstown Valley and Cumberland Valley is defined politically, as the state line between Maryland and Pennsylvania. The political definition restricts Hagerstown Valley to Washington County, Maryland, while the larger definition includes part of Franklin County, Pennsylvania as well. Sometimes Cumberland Valley is defined so as to include Hagerstown Valley entirely, extending south all the way to the Potomac River. Antietam Creek flows through Hagerstown Valley to the Potomac River. Antietam National Battlefield is also in the valley, where the Battle of Antietam was fought during the American Civil War. The main cities are Hagerstown, Maryland and Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. The water divide between Hagerstown and Cumberland valleys occurs near the city of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

Packhouse Ford, also known historically as Pack Horse Ford, Blackford's Ford and Boteler's Ford, is a historic crossing point of the Potomac River. It is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of downtown Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and south of Sharpsburg, Maryland, USA. The crossing was a Native American crossing site and eventually became a major crossing point in colonial times. During the American Civil War, it was used by military forces involved in the 1862 Battle of Antietam. The site of the ford is marked by a commemorative marker on the West Virginia side of the river, at the junction of River and Trough Roads.The ford was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

The Battle of Shepherdstown, also known as the Battle of Boteler's Ford, took place September 19–20, 1862, at Boteler's Ford along the Potomac River, during the Maryland campaign of the American Civil War. After the Battle of Antietam on September 17, General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia withdrew across the Potomac. Lee left a rear guard commanded by Brigadier General William N. Pendleton at Boteler's Ford. On September 19, elements of the Union V Corps dueled with Pendleton's artillery before pushing a short distance across the river at dusk. Pendleton inaccurately informed Lee that all of the artillery of the rear guard had been captured. On the morning of September 20, the Confederates counterattacked with A. P. Hill's Light Division, forcing the Union units back across the Potomac. One Union unit, the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, did not withdraw at the same time as the others and suffered heavy losses. Lee's army continued its retreat into the Shenandoah Valley after the battle.

The Potomac Mills was a mill complex located along the Potomac River roughly .5 miles (0.80 km) downriver of Shepherdstown. Built in 1826, the complex was originally used as a gristmill. In 1829, the mill began producing cement for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal's construction. The factory continued to produce cement after the canal opened, and it shipped its product along the canal to other cities. Flooding and drought conditions in the 1880s led the mill to reduce its operations, and by 1901 the mill closed permanently.The remaining buildings from the mill occupy an 18-acre (7.3 ha) site and are mostly in ruins. The buildings include the main mill building, several lime kilns, a headrace wall, and an office building. The stone foundation of the mill's dam, which extends across the river into Washington County, Maryland, is also still part of the site. The mill site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 5, 2014.

The Jacob Highbarger House was built circa 1832 in Sharpsburg, Maryland, United States. The Greek Revival-influenced house is a late example of limestone construction in the Cumberland Valley of Maryland, with an attached log workshop. The log structure is an unusual example of corner-post log construction with diagonal bracing.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Sharpsburg is a town in Washington County, Maryland. The town is approximately 13 miles (21 km) south of Hagerstown. Its population was 705 at the 2010 census. During the American Civil War, the Battle of Antietam, referred to as the Battle of Sharpsburg by the South, was fought on what is now Antietam National Battlefield, in the vicinity of Antietam Creek.

The Joseph C. Hays House at 103–105 West Main Street in Sharpsburg, Maryland, United States, was originally built in 1823 as a three-bay side hall double-parlor house in the Federal style. It was soon expanded to the east with a two-bay parlor and one commercial bay. The east parlor entered commercial use during the mid-19th century as a dry goods store operated by Benjamin F. Cronise. Circa 1920 a storefront was added and a copper front was applied with BANK lettered under a central pediment, behind a marquee. The property combines early 19th-century Federal architecture with a good example of early 20th-century commercial architectural ornament.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Tolson's Chapel and School is a historic African American church located at Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It was built in 1866 and served as a church and a Freedmen's Bureau school for black residents of Sharpsburg in the years following the American Civil War. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2021.

The Good-Reilly House is a historic home located at Sharpsburg, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It is located at the northeast corner of the town square and is a 1+1⁄2-story stone house with combined Maryland colonial and Georgian stylistic influence. The house likely dates from the 1780s, and features flush stone chimneys on each gable end.The Good-Reilly House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

The William Chapline House in Sharpsburg, Maryland, United States is a large stone house built about 1790. The house has shaped stonework at the front and rubble stonework on the sides with a cast-iron porch added around the turn of the twentieth century. The house was damaged during the Battle of Antietam, when it was hit with canister shot. At that time it was occupied by Dr. Augustin A. Biggs, who treated the wounded from the battle in the house.William Chapline House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
