The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge carries U.S. Route 1 and U.S. Route 301 (Jefferson Davis Highway) across the Appomattox River at the Atlantic Seaboard fall line. It joins Colonial Heights and Petersburg, Virginia. Originally constructed for an interurban streetcar service in the early 20th century, it was rebuilt in the 1990s and is toll-free.

Petersburg Union Station is a former train station in Petersburg, Virginia, United States. It was built in 1909–1910 for the Norfolk and Western Railway, and was later used by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and Amtrak.

McIlwaine House, also known as the Jones-McIlwaine House, is a historic home located at Petersburg, Virginia. It was built in 1815, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, Federal style frame dwelling with a 1+1⁄2-story wing. It has a front porch with a modillioned cornice supported by Doric order columns. The house was moved eight blocks to its present location in 1972.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Nathaniel Friend House is a historic home located at Petersburg, Virginia. It was built in 1815–1816, and is a 3+1⁄2-story, six-bay, Federal style brick commercial / residential building. It has a rear ell that may incorporate the original kitchen and smokehouse. The house was built by the wealthy import-export merchant, Nathaniel Friend, Jr., who also served as the mayor of Petersburg in 1812–13.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It is located in the Petersburg Old Town Historic District.

The Battle of Blandford (or Blanford), also called the Battle of Petersburg, took place near Petersburg, Virginia on 25 April 1781, late in the American War of Independence. Roughly 2,300 British regulars under the command of Brigadier General William Phillips defeated about 1,000 militia under Major General Baron von Steuben. The introduction of a British troop presence led by turncoat general Benedict Arnold into Virginia in early 1781 prompted an increase in militia activity to counter the British force. The militia were, however, poorly trained and equipped, and were unable to prevent Arnold from moving freely. Arnold was reinforced in March 1781 by additional troops led by General Phillips, who targeted Petersburg in a raiding expedition. Militia forces led by von Steuben and Peter Muhlenberg decided to make a stand at Blandford, then a separate community. When the battle was joined, the outnumbered militia provided remarkably stiff resistance to the British advance, and executed a disciplined retreat across the Appomattox River, avoiding a flanking attempt led by John Graves Simcoe. They eventually retreated to Richmond, where they joined forces with Continental Army troops led by the Marquis de Lafayette. Philips and Arnold continued to launch raids, and eventually joined forces with Charles Cornwallis's army from North Carolina.

City Market, also known as Farmers Market, is an historic public market located at 9 East Old Street in Petersburg, Virginia. It was built in 1878–1879 through a land given in trust by merchant Robert Balling. The City Market is an octagonal brick building. It measures 93 feet in diameter and is surrounded by a large metal canopy supported on elaborate iron brackets. The market’s high-rafted interior was originally where perishables were sold, whereas the outside stalls were for produce.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. It is located in the Petersburg Old Town Historic District.

Farmers' Bank is the first bank museum of its kind found in Virginia. Farmers' Bank was incorporated in 1812 and the Petersburg, Virginia branch opened in 1817.

The Exchange Building, also known as the Merchant's Exchange Building or The Exchange, is a historic commercial building in at 15-19 West Bank Street in Petersburg, Virginia. Built in 1841, this Greek Revival style building is one of the least-altered examples of a 19th-century market hall. It now houses the Siege Museum commemorating the Siege of Petersburg. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.

Centre Hill Museum or Centre Hill Mansion as its proper name, completed initial construction in 1823 and was built by Revolutionary War veteran Robert Bolling IV. The Bollings were a very prominent family for many generations, being granted a plot of land in present-day Petersburg by the then King of England. Centre Hill served as Union headquarters during the reconstruction period; therefore, a meeting between a Union general and President Lincoln took place inside the home in 1865. President Taft also spent time on the property. Its doors were opened as a museum in the 1950s.

Appomattox Iron Works is a historic iron foundry complex located at Petersburg, Virginia. The complex consists of nine buildings: the machine shop, the mill store, the supply room, the pipe shop, the carpenter's shop and pattern shop, the core room, the foundry building, the blacksmith's shop, and the ruins of a stable. The machine shop at 28 Old Street is the oldest structure in the complex. It was built between 1810 and 1825, and is a three-story, four-bay, Federal style brick building. The Appomattox Iron Works operated at this location from 1899 until 1972.The complex was designated a Virginia State Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It is located in the Petersburg Old Town Historic District.

Petersburg Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Petersburg, Virginia. It was designed by New York architect Calvin Pollard and built between 1838 and 1840. It is a two-story, Classical Revival style brick building. It rests on a granite foundation and measures 57 feet wide and 93 feet deep. It features a pedimented hexastyle front portico and a double-tiered bell and clock tower modeled after the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens. Major work was performed on the structure until 1877 when extensive repairs and interior alterations were carried out. A 30-foot addition was constructed in 1965. During the Siege of Petersburg, Union troops used the tower for a sighting mark and spared the structure from the bombardment.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is located in the Petersburg Courthouse Historic District.

The Violet Bank Historic District encompasses a historic streetcar suburban area of Colonial Heights, Virginia. The area, originally part of the large Violet Bank plantation, was platted and subdivided in the early 20th century, with development restrictions that resulted in a significant uniformity of layout within the subdivisions. Specific restrictions against flat roofs and fencing between yards are still evident in the building constructed in the area, which includes 237 primarily residential buildings on about 50 acres (20 ha) of land. The district includes the original Violet Bank plantation house, now a museum.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
