George Washington Preparatory High School is a public four-year high school of Los Angeles Unified School District in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is located in the Westmont census-designated place and has a Los Angeles postal address.Founded in 1926, the school has a Los Angeles address but is not located in the city limits of Los Angeles. The mascot is the General, a reference to the school's namesake George Washington. The school colors are red and blue. The school serves many areas in South Los Angeles and unincorporated areas around South Los Angeles, including Athens, West Athens and Westmont. In addition it serves the LAUSD section of Hawthorne.It was the location for a 1986 TV movie Hard Lessons, depicting Denzel Washington as the new principal, who sets out to rid the school of gang violence and drugs and restore educational values to the school. The current principal is Tony Booker. Two famous former principals are George McKenna, whom Denzel Washington portrayed in the movie Hard Lessons; and past LAUSD Board Member Marguerite LaMotte.

West Athens is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 9,393 at the 2020 census. It is an unincorporated community within the 2nd Supervisorial District of Los Angeles County. West Athens is served by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, operating out of the South Los Angeles Station. The approximate boundaries for West Athens are: 87th Street to the north, Vermont Avenue to the east, El Segundo Boulevard to the south, and approximately Western Avenue to Van Ness Avenue to the west. West Athens is predominantly residential, with commercial uses along its main corridors. Los Angeles Southwest Community College lies within the West Athens neighborhood and city limits.

Vermont/Athens station is a below-grade light rail station on the C Line of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. It is located in the median of Interstate 105 (Century Freeway), below Vermont Avenue, after which the station is named along with the Athens community where it is located. The original name for the station was Vermont Ave/I-105, but was later simplified and its location in Athens clarified, with a change to Vermont/Athens. This station is expected to be a stop along the Vermont Transit Corridor when that service commences.

Crenshaw station is a elevated light rail station on the C Line of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. It is located in the median of Interstate 105 (Century Freeway), above Crenshaw Boulevard, after which the station is named, in the city of Hawthorne, California. The station is not named for the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles, which is located several miles north of this station, and is served by K Line. The original name for the station was Crenshaw Blvd/I-105, but was later simplified to just Crenshaw. The stories on the tiled walls in street-level plaza were collected and organized by Buzz Spector in an artwork entitled "Crenshaw Stories."

Eldon Industries, Inc. was a toy company located in Hawthorne, California (the hometown of the Mattel toy company), that also in its heyday operated factories in Canada, Spain, England, Japan, and the Netherlands. The company is best known for items and brands that repackaged Japanese toys and distributed them worldwide - an example is the Billy Blastoff astronaut toy produced by Tomy. Slot cars and plastic toys were common Eldon offerings. Eldon's slogan was "Just for the fun of it." which could be heard in both TV and radio advertisement, as well as in print ads.

The R&D Tunnel, also called the Hawthorne Test Tunnel or Boring Test Tunnel, is a 1.14 miles (1.83 km) tunnel in Hawthorne, California, for testing hyperloop and "loop-based transportation". It was completed by The Boring Company in late 2018. The single-bore tunnel was constructed during 2017 and 2018 using a 14-foot (4.2 m) diameter tunnel boring machine, giving a finished 12-foot (3.8 m) internal diameter.
